  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of aerobic exercise on serum lipids, body weight, and body mass index in adults with hypertension using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: Six electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Co-chrane library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus) and five domestic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials studies. We used random effect models to derive weighted mean differences (WMD) and their 95% confidence intervals (CI) of aerobic exercise on serum lipids, body weight, and body mass index. Results: Nineteen studies met our inclusion criteria. In comparison with the control group, triglyceride level (TG) (-13.49 mg/dL, 95% CI: -26.74 to -0.24) and body weight (-0.62 kg, 95% CI: -1.08 to -0.16) difference between follow-up and baseline was significantly reduced in the aerobic exercise group. However, no difference was found in total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and body mass index (BMI). Conclusion: Aerobic exercise is effective in reducing the TG level and body weight in adults with hypertension. In order to improve levels of serum TC, LDL-C and HDL-C of hypertensive patients, it's needed to combine other intervention methods such as diet therapy.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential hypolipidemic effect of job's tears diet with the controlled intake of fiber in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Forty eight rats were fed either control diet or experimental diets (Raw, milled job's tears(RMJ); Raw, whole grain job's tears(RWJ);Steamed, milled job's tears(SMJ);Roasted, milled job's tears(OMJ)) for 3 weeks. The levels of total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), free fatty acid(FFA) and triglyceride (TG) in plasma, liver and skeletal muscle were compared. Compared to diabetic control group, the level of plasma TC was lower in OMJ an SMJ fed rats, and was not different from that in RMJ and RWJ fed rats. The level of LDL-C was significantly lower in RMJ, OMJ and SMJ fed rats. For plasma HDL-C levels, no difference was observed among all group. Plasma FFA level significantly lower in RMJ, SMJ and RWJ fed rats, Plasma TG a levels of all job's ears fed groups were 50∼70% lower and liver TG levels of all job's tears fed groups were 70∼80% lower than those fo diabetic control group. For muscle TG, no differences were seen among all groups. These results suggest that steamed job's tears and roasted job's tears could have the potentaila on improving lipid profile fo diabetes in clinical setting and the different cooking methods of job's tears might affect the lipid profile of the diabetic rats.

  • Although fasting programs have recently attracted close attention because of benefits of detoxification, few studies have examined these programs. This study investigates the effects of a modified juice-based fasting program on lipid metabolism. A total of 33 volunteers fasted for 10 days and participated in program lectures, exercise programs, water bath regimens, and enemas. Pre- and post-program blood samples were obtained to evaluate lipoprotein levels. A paired t-test was conducted using SPSS 18.0. Changes in the lipid profile were observed during the juice-based fasting program and attending 3 degrees. All lipid profiles decreased significantly, including total cholesterol (TC) (p<0.001), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p<0.05). Program participation was documented by assessing attendance levels as high, moderate, and low. TC decreased significantly in all programs and levels (p<0.05), TG decreased proportionally only in enemas according to the attending degree: high (48 %), moderate (20 %), and low (10 %). HDL-C decreased at all low levels, but moderate exercise ($53.8{\pm}12.5mg/dL$ to $55.6{\pm}10.2mg/dL$) and a high enema ($54.9{\pm}14.1mg/dL$ to $55.0{\pm}9.4mg/dL$) showed small increases. The antioxidant property of the juice-based fasting program in terms of the blood vessel, enemas, and exercise played an important role in preventing cardiovascular disease from increased levels of HDL-C. These results suggest that juice-based fasting and combined lifestyle programs may help improve lipid metabolism and protect against dyslipidemia.

  • This study was conducted for a period for 5 weeks in order to evaluate effects of brewer's yeast slurry(BYS) on the growth performance, organ development and blood composition of broiler chicks. A total number of 84 one day old broiler chicks were allocated to one of three supplemented diets: 0%(control), 2% and 4% BYS. Body weight gain and feed efficiency of chicks fed the diet supplemented with 4% BYS significantly was increased by 9% and 8%, respectively, compared to the control diet(P<0.05). The BYS supplements did not affect weights of liver, heart and abdominal fat, and their ratios per body weight. However, in 4% BYS supplement group, ratio of liver to body weight significantly decreased(P<0.05) by 12%, compared to the control. The supplement of 4% BYS decreased the concentration of triglyceride by 31%, and increased the concentration of high density lipoprotein(HDL) by 26%, compared to the control(P<0.05). These results indicated that the supplementation of 4% BYS in diet can improve body weight gain as well as feed efficiency, and increased the concentration of blood HDL, and ratio of HDL to total-cholesterol of broiler chicks.

  • This study was performed to investigate the changes of the serological parameters of the rats fed a high fat and high cholesterol diets with or without quercetin supplement for five weeks. Thirty Sprague-Dawley male rats ($152.1{\pm}17.0\;g$ of body weight) were randomly divided into three groups with 10 rats in each group. Rats in the control(C) group were fed the high fat and high cholesterol diet containing 15% lard, 2% cholesterol and 0.5% sodium cholate (w/w). Rats in two treatment groups were fed the same diet supplemented with 0.25% quercetin (Q-0.25) or 0.5% quercetin (Q-0.5) on the weight to weight basis, respectively. The final body weight, gain of body weight, the amount of feed intake and the feed efficiency of rats in between control and treatment groups were not significantly different. Serum glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin and albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio of rats showed no significant differences between control and treatment groups. Serum total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and atherogenic index(AI) of rats in both Q-0.25 and Q-0.5 groups were significantly lower than in C group (p < 0.05). However serum high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) was significantly higher in both Q-0.25 and Q-0.5 groups than in C group (p < 0.05). The levels of triglyceride in sera of rats showed no significant differences between control and treatment groups. The values of AST and ALT in sera of rats showed no significant differences between control and treatment groups. Therefore the supplementation of quercetin to high fat and high cholesterol diet in rats was effective in reducing the levels of serum lipids to cause cardiovascular diseases and in elevating the level of HDL-C to protect cardiovascular diseases.
