  • Let E be a uniformly convex Banach space with a uniformly $G{\hat{a}}teaux$ differentiable norm, C a nonempty closed convex subset of E, and $T\;:\;C\;{\rightarrow}\;E$ a nonexpansive mapping satisfying the weak inwardness condition. Assume that every weakly compact convex subset of E has the fixed point property. For $f\;:\;C\;{\rightarrow}\;C$ a contraction and $t\;{\in}\;(0,\;1)$, let $x_t$ be a unique fixed point of a contraction $T_t\;:\;C\;{\rightarrow}\;E$, defined by $T_tx\;=\;tf(x)\;+\;(1\;-\;t)Tx$, $x\;{\in}\;C$. It is proved that if {$x_t$} is bounded, then $x_t$ converges to a fixed point of T, which is the unique solution of certain variational inequality. Moreover, the strong convergence of other implicit and explicit iterative schemes involving the sunny nonexpansive retraction is also given in a reflexive and strictly convex Banach space with a uniformly $G{\hat{a}}teaux$ differentiable norm.

  • Recently, many natural medicines, which have advantage of less side effects and possibility of long-term use have been studied for their capacity of anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and regenerative potential of periodontal tissues. Olibanum has the effects to hemostasis, analgesic and anti-inflammatory, and it also has been traditionally used as a drug for the treatment of bone disease in oriental medicine. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of Olibanum extracts on the activity and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells, alkaline phosphatase(ALP) synthesis, formation of bone nodules and expression of type I collagen of MC3T3-E1 cells. To examine the cellular activity, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured with ${\alpha}-MEM(control)$ and each concentration of Olibanum for 2 days and 4 days. To compare the ALP synthesis, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured with ${\alpha}-MEM(negative\; control)$, dexamethasone(positive control), and each concentration of Olibanum for 2 days and 4 days. To compare the bone nodule formation, MC3T3-E1 ells were cultured for 21 days, and to compare the type I collagen expression, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured for 4 days. The cellular activity of MC3T3-E1 cells treated with $1{\mu}g/ml$ of Olibanum extracts was significantly increased at 4-day(p<0.05) to control. The activity of ALP in MC3T3-E1 cells treated with $1{\mu}g/ml$ Olibanum extracts was significantly increased at 4-day(p<0.05). All the experimental groups showed much more bone nodule formation than control groups. The group treated with $1{\mu}g/ml$ of Olibanum extracts was the highest bone nodule formation, and showed much more type I collagen expression than negative control. These results indicate that Olibanum extracts may be considered effective in the activity and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells.

  • Background: Variants of human papillomavirus (HPV) show more oncogenicity than do prototypes. The HPV16 Asian variant (HPV16As) plays a major role in cervical cancer of Asian populations. Some amino acid changes in the E6 protein of HPV16 variants affect E6 functions such as p53 interaction and host immune surveillance. This study aimed to investigate activities of HPV16As E6 protein on modulation of expression of miRNA-21 as well as interferon regulatory factors (IRFs) 1, 3, 7 and c-fos. Materials and Methods: Vectors expressing E6 protein of HPV16As (E6D25E) or HPV16 prototype (E6Pro) were constructed and transfected into C33A cells. HCK1T cells expressing E6D25E or E6Pro were established by transducing retrovirus-containing E6D25E or 16E6Pro. The E6AP-binding activity of E6 and proliferation of the transfected C33A cells were determined. MiR-21 and mRNA of interesting genes were detected in the transfected C33A cells and/or the HCK1T cells, with or without treatment by culture medium from HeLa cells (HeLa-CM). Results: E6D25E showed binding activity with E6AP similar to that of E6Pro. Interestingly, E6D25E showed a higher activity of miR-21 induction than did E6Pro in C33A cells expressing E6 protein. This result was similar to the HCK1T cells expressing E6 protein, with HeLa-CM treatment. The miR-21 up-regulation significantly corresponded to its target expression. Different levels of expression of IRFs were also observed in the HCK1T cells expressing E6 protein. Interestingly, when treated with HeLa-CM, IRFs 1, 3 and 7 as well as c-fos were significantly suppressed in the HCK1T cells expressing E6D25E, whereas those in the HCK1T cells expressing E6Pro were induced. A similar situation was seen for IFN-${\alpha}$ and IFN-${\beta}$. Conclusions: E6D25E of the HPV16As variant differed from the E6 prototype in its activities on epigenetic modulation and immune surveillance and this might be a key factor for the important role of this variant in cervical cancer progression.

  • The pH dependence of the kinetic parameters of mutant O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase (OASS) from Salmonella typhimurium LT-2 has been determined in order to obtain information on the chemical mechanism. The initial velocity pattern obtained by varying the concentrations of OAS at several fixed concentrations of TNB, shows an intersection on the left of the ordinate at pH 7.0, indicating that the kinetic mechanism is a sequential mechanism in which substrate inhibition by OAS is observed while the wild type enzyme showed a ping pong mechanism. The values of $V/E_t$, $V/K_{OAS}E_{t}$ and $V/K_{TNB}E_{t}$ decreased by about 68%, 14% and 16% as compared with the wild type enzyme. The $V/K_{OAS}E_{t}$ is a pK of 6.5 on the acid side of the pH profile, and the $V/K_{TNB}$ is pH independent. As compared with the wild type enzyme, the pKs in the V/K profiles are shifted, reflecting that binding of the cofactor in free E:OAS is less asymmetric.

  • Total laryngectomy has become an usual treatment for any advanced carcinoma of the laynx, but most patients who have undergone total laryngectomy have shown permanant disability in voice production. I compared the first three formant frequencies estimated from MRI to those measured directly from speech data of the T-E patients and the normal. It was to estimate the accuracy of MRI and to compare the vocal tract shape of the normal to T-E patients. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The middle sagittle section of the MRI represents vocal tract well during pnonation. The vocal tract shape of the T-E shunt patients are lack of pharyngeal space and superior space of the glottis. 2. The length of the normal subject's vocal tract is 17 cm. For the T-E shunt patients, the length from lip to shunt opening is 17.5 cm in case 1, and 18.5 cm in case 2. That of the true resonante chamber is 13 cm and 13.5 cm for each case respectively. 3. T-E shunt patients phonated strained voice. The intensity of the higher formant frequency decreased especially in /o/, /u/. 4. The vocal tract is shortened during the phonation by T-E shunt patients. In case of /e/ and /i/, front cavities are constricted while back cavities are shortened. 5. The pseudoglottis of the T-E shunt patients is located at $14{\sim}15\;cm$ below from lips.

  • Let $\mathcal{H}$ be an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space with a fixed orthonormal base $\{e_1,e_2,{\cdots}\}$. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the subspace lattice generated by the subspaces $\{[e_1],[e_1,e_2],[e_1,e_2,e_3],{\cdots}\}$ and let $Alg{\mathcal{L}}$ be the algebra of bounded operators which leave invariant all projections in $\mathcal{L}$. Let p and q be natural numbers($p{\leqslant}q$). Let $\mathcal{B}_{p,q}=\{T{\in}Alg\mathcal{L}{\mid}T_{(p,q)}=0\}$. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a linear manifold in $Alg{\mathcal{L}}$ such that $\{0\}{\varsubsetneq}{\mathcal{A}}{\subset}{\mathcal{B}}_{p,q}$. If $\mathcal{A}$ is an ideal in $Alg{\mathcal{L}}$, then $T_{(i,j)}=0$, $p{\leqslant}i{\leqslant}q$ and $i{\leqslant}j{\leqslant}q$ for all T in $\mathcal{A}$.

  • This study was performed to measure the angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of peptide extracts derived from the enzymatic proteolysis of Hanwoo Musculus longissimus (M. longissimus) during cold storage. Thermolysin (80 ppm, w/w) and protease type XIII (100 ppm, w/w) were injected separately or in combination for the enzymatic proteolysis of sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar proteins prior to storage at $5^{\circ}C$ (T1) or at $-1^{\circ}C$ (T2) in a chilling room for 9 days. Beef injected with thermolysin (E2) and thermolysin+protease type XIII (E3) showed a significantly higher degree of hydrolysis at both storage temperatures (p<0.05). During the storage period, T1E2 at day 6 and T1E3 at day 9 showed the strongest ACE inhibitory activity with sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar protein proteolysates. Macromolecules greater than 10,000 Da were removed by ultra filtration, and the filtrates were separated into fractions using gel filtration. Five and three major fractions were collected from S-T1E2-6 and M-T1E3-9 extracts, respectively, and the $4^{th}$ fraction of the S-T1E2-6 extracts showed the highest ACE inhibitory rate of $61.96{\pm}7.41%$.

  • For $Q = [0,S] \times [0,T]$ let C(Q) denote Yeh-Wiener space, i.e., the space of all real-valued continuous functions x(s,t) on Q such that x(0,t) = x(s,0) = 0 for every (s,t) in Q. Yeh [10] defined a Gaussian measure $m_y$ on C(Q) (later modified in [13]) such that as a stochastic process ${x(s,t), (s,t) \epsilon Q}$ has mean $E[x(s,t)] = \smallint_{C(Q)} x(s,t)m_y(dx) = 0$ and covariance $E[x(s,t)x(u,\upsilon)] = min{s,u} min{t,\upsilon}$. Let $C_\omega \equiv C[0,T]$ denote the standard Wiener space on [0,T] with Wiener measure $m_\omega$. Yeh [12] introduced the concept of the conditional Wiener integral of F given X, E(F$\mid$X), and for case X(x) = x(T) obtained some very useful results including a Kac-Feynman integral equation.
