  • The purpose of this study was to develope and test the structural model for quality of life in women having hysterectomies. A hypothetical model was constructed on the basis of previous studies and a review of literature. The conceptual framework was built around eight constructs. Exogenous variables included in this model were marital intimacy, importance of uterus, professional support, positive coping behavior and pre-operative symptoms. Endogenous variables were spouse's support, sense of loss and quality of life. Empirical data for testing the hypothetical model was collected using a self-report questionnare from 203 women having hysterectomies at the outpatient clinics of four general hospitals and a mail survey in Pusan City. The Data was collected from December, 1997 to January, 1998. Reliability of the eight instruments was tested with Cronbach's alpha which ranged from 0.639-0.915. For the data analysis, SPSS 7.5 WIN Program and LISREL 8.12 WIN Program were used for descriptive statistics and covariance structural analysis. The results of covariance structure analysis were as follows : 1. Hypothetical model showed a good fit with the empirical data. [$\chi$$^2$=6.93(df=5, P=.23), GFI=.99, AGFI=.94, RMSR=.019, NNFI=.97, NFI=.98, CN=440, standardized residuals(-2.14-2.10)] 2. For the parsimony of model, a modified model was constructed by deleting 3 paths and adding 1 path according to the criteria of statistical significance and meaning. 3. The modified model also showed a good fit with the data. [$\chi$$^2$=5.26(df=7, P=.63), GFI=.99, AGFI=.97, RMSR=.014, NNFI=1.02, NFI=.99, CN=710, standardized residuals(-1.46-1.70)] Results of the testing of the hypothesis were as follows : 1. Marital intimacy(${\gamma}$11=.78, t=14.37) and professional support(${\gamma}$13=.12, t=2.12) had a significant direct effect on the spouse's support. 2. Pre-operative symptoms(${\gamma}$25=.32, t=3.12), importance of uterus(${\gamma}$22=.20, t=2.61) and spouse's support($\beta$2l=-.19, t=-2.43) had a significant direct effect on the sense of loss. 3. Sense of loss($\beta$32=-.66, t=-9.83) had a direct effect on the quality of life. Marital intimacy had a direct(${\gamma}$31=.19, t=3.33), indirect(${\gamma}$31=.14, t=2.52) and total effect(${\gamma}$31=.25, t=4.41) on the quality of life. Professional support had a direct effect(${\gamma}$33=.11, t=2.07) and total effect(${\gamma}$33=.13, t=2.31) on the quality of life. The direct effect of pre-operative symptoms(${\gamma}$35=-.36, t=4.02) and positive coping behavior(${\gamma}$34=.15, t=2.06) had the insignificant effect on the quality of life while, due to the idirect effect these variables had overall significant effect on the quality of life. The results of this study showed that the sense of loss had the most significant direct effect on the quality of life. Marital intimacy, pre -operative symptoms and spouse's support had a significant direct effect on this sense of loss. These four variables, the sense of loss, marital intimacy, pre-operative symptoms and spouse's support, were identified as relatively important variables. The results of this study suggested that there is needed to determine if nursing intervention would alleviate this sense of loss and promote a greater quality of life in women who have had hysterectomies.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find the desirable R&D policies in defense area by analyzing causality between GDP and R&D investments in government, private, defense sectors. We have five variables which are composed of GDP, total R&D investment, R&D investments in government, private and defense sectors to figure out the causality between R&D investment in defense sector and other components. In the course of analysis on causality, we took the unit root test of variables to prevent spurious regression. Also we need to take cointegration test about non-stationary variables before the causality test. According to these test results, we took the causality test using ECM(Error Correction Model) for the models which have cointegrating relations. And we took ordinary Granger causality test for model which doesn't have a long-run stationary relationship. As a result of the causality test, it was shown that there exists the long-nu causality to GDP and R&D investments in government and private sectors from other variables. However, there doesn't exist the causality to defense R&D investment from other variables. We found that there doesn't exist the causality between R&D investments in defense and private sectors, and that they are independent.

  • Design variables for suspension systems cannot always be realized in the actual suspension systems due to tolerances in manufacturing and assembly processes. In order to deal with these tolerances, design variables associated with kinematic configuration and compliance characteristics of suspensions are treated as random variables. The reliability of a design target with respect to a design variable is defined as the probability that the design target is in the acceptable design range for all possible values of the design variable. To compute reliability, the limit state, which is the boundary between the acceptable and unacceptable design, is expressed mathematically by a limit state function with value greater than 0 for acceptable design, and less than 0 for unacceptable design. Through reliability analysis, the acceptable range of design variables that satisfy a reliability target is specified. Furthermore, through sensitivity analysis, a general procedure for optimization of the design target with respect to the design variables has been established.

  • With the recent development of machining technology, high speed machining process is widely used for-the mold and difficult-to -cut-materials machining since it allows achieving high productivity and surface quality. However, during the high speed machining process, high cutting speed and feed rate can cause abrupt tool life decrease due to rapid rising of the cutting tool temperature. Such situation may cause increase of machining cost. Thus, in this study, developed optimization algorithm is applied to determine optimal machining variables for multiple high speed machining. The R-T characteristic curve for machining economics problems with a linear-lorarithmic tool life model is determined by applying sensitivity analysis. finally, a series of high speed machining experiments are performed to determine the desired optimal machining variables, and the results are analyzed.

  • This study investigated the characteristics and relationship between surface roughness and vibration according to the cutting conditions in the slot milling of AL7075-T6. The spindle speed, feed, and depth of cut were selected as independent variables and the amplitude of acceleration and surface roughness as dependent variables. Feed affected the surface roughness. As the spindle speed increased, the amplitude of vibration increased in the direction perpendicular to the feed direction. In addition, the amplitude of vibration and surface roughness showed a negative correlation. Under a given feed, the surface roughness improved as the vibration increased.

  • This study was designed to identify the relationship between health perception arid health promoting behavior in the elderly. The subjects for this study were 92 persons over 65, who could be easily met in households, pavilions for the aged, and parks. The data were collected during the period from March 24th to April 12th, 1997 by interviews with a structured questionnaire. The instruments used for this study are as follows: The Health Perception Questionnaire developed by Ware (1979) and translated by Yu Ji-Su(1985). The Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile(HPLP) developed by Walker, Sechrist & Pender (1987) and partially amended by the author of this study. The Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile(HPLP) was parameterized by nutrition, exercise, stress management, self actualization, health responsibility, and interpersonal support. The data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t - test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation using an SPSS program. The results of this study were as follows: 1. Hypothesis 1 : 'The higher the level of health perception in the elderly, the higher the practice of health promoting behavior in the elderly' was supported(r=0.449, p<0.001). 2. The health perception mean score on a four point scale was 2.564. 3. For health promoting behavior, the mean score on a four point scale was 2.560. The factor of the highest mean score was interpersonal support(2.850) and factor of the lowest mean score was exercise(1.964). 4. Among the general characteristic variables, sex(t=4.12, p<0.001), religion(t=2.47, p<0.05), education(F=3.27, p<0.05), marital status (t=2.22, p<0.05), living situation(F=3.50, p<0.05), and hobby(t= -2.57, p<0.05) showed strong connections to health perception. 5. Among the general characteristic variables, religion(t = 1.83, p<0.05), and marital status(t= 2.12, p<0.05) showed strong connections to health promoting behavior. In conclusion, this study revealed that health perception is an important factor related to health promoting behavior in the elderly. The general characteristic variables showed strong connections to health perception and health promoting behavior. Therefore, nurses should consider health perception and general characteristic variables when they plan nursing intervention for the elderly. Also, educational programs encouraging constructive health perception should be developed.
