  • Manufacturing companies' cost competitiveness with respect to equipment management can be achieved by satisfying additional market demands by their own capacity without purchasing additional equipments. In essence, it can be accomplished by making continuous investigation into bottlenecks and improvement on them. Therefore, equipment performance measure systems should be designed so that they can support manufacturing companies' such endeavors. With the purpose of establishing an effective equipment performance measurement system for detecting and improving bottlenecks, this study (1) suggests some desirable features that such a system should have, (2) evaluates conventional equipment performance measurement systems in terms of their usefulness for the detection and improvement of bottlenecks, and (3) proposes an improved system. We also perform a simulation experiment to demonstrate the limitations of the conventional systems and show how the proposed system can resolve the problems.

  • The performance of crash cushion systems is certified through the full scale crash tests by the standard for installation and maintenance guidelines for roadside safety appurtenance. The impact severities of impacting vehicles in collision with crash cushion systems are rated by indices THIV and PHD. Crash test results are considered to study the performance of three crash cushion systems. In case of the frontal impact or the offset frontal impact, the results show that THIV values of three systems are very close to the threshold limit for the occupant protection. Also, the results show that PHD would be improper for the occupant protection performance index. In order to improve the occupant protection performance of crash cushions, ASI needs to be included in the impact severity index.

  • In this paper we present the performance bounds of the optimal FIR filter in continuous time systems with modeling uncertainty. The performance measure bounds are calculated from the estimation error covariance bounds of the optimal FIR filter and the suboptimal FIR filter. Performance error bounds range are expressed by the upper bounds on the estimation error covariance difference between the real and nominal values in case of the systems with noise uncertainty or model uncertainty. The performance bounds of the systems are derived on the assumption that the system uncertainty and the estimation error covariance are imperfectly known a priori. The estimation error bounds of the optimal FIR filter is compared with those of the Kalman filter via a numerical example applied to the estimation of the motion of an aircraft carrier at sea, which shows the former has better performances than the latter.

  • This study aims to provide the results of a case study, based on the action research approach, in which an user-oriented management system for enterprise information systems operational performance is successful developed and applied. This study performs the research and summarizes the results by adopting 5-step approach of action research, i.e., diagnosing, action planning, action taking, evaluating and specifying learning. The most important lessons learned from the study include (1) operation performance measures should be established to be shared by the management and users; (2) evaluation and improvement activities should be performed continually; and (3) formula to calculate the measure should be evolved so that improvement initiatives can be identified. The results of the study are expected to provide the companies intending to develop a management system for enterprise information systems operational performance with the practical and useful information. In addition, it is expected to suggest the research results that can be utilized as a basis for future research in this area.

  • In this paper, the performance of ultra-wideband (UWB) single input multiple output (SIMO) systems to achieve high data rate communications is studied in dense multipath environments. The effects of spatial and temporal diversities on the performance of multi-user time-hopping UWB systems using binary pulse position modulation (2PPM) are analyzed. The reduced-complexity Rake receivers based on the selective combining (called SRake) and partial combining (called PRake) are considered. The theoretical and simulation results show that the BER performance of the UWB system can be enhanced as the number of array elements and/or Rake fingers increases. Moreover, we observe that SRake is more effective for the IR-UWB systems to achieve a good BER performance, as compared with PRake.

  • In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the performance of telerobotic systems and the two independent time-delay on different modality, which are haptic and video. Especially, we try to find some performance improvement when the amount of delay of haptic and video is synchronized. Experiments were conducted with 10 subjects by scanning the amount of video and haptic delay independently. It is rather interesting to note that the teleoperation performance was not that sensitive to video delay, and the synchronized video and haptic delay doesn't show better performance than the case when haptic delay is lower than video delay.

  • Hardware implementation methods for Artificial Neural Network (ANN) have been researched for a long time to achieve high performance. We have proposed a Network on Chip (NoC) for ANN, and this architecture can reduce communication load and increase performance when an implemented ANN is small. In this paper, a multiple NoC models are proposed for ANN, which can implement both a small size ANN and a large size one. The simulation result shows that the proposed multiple NoC models can reduce communication load, increase system performance of connection-per-second (CPS), and reduce system running time compared with the existing hardware ANN. Furthermore, this architecture is reconfigurable and reparable. It can be used to implement different applications of ANN.

  • The conventional observations of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) are compared in the numerical weather forecast system at the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). The weather forecasting system used in this study is consists of Korea Integrated Model (KIM) as a global numerical weather prediction model, three-dimensional variational method as a data assimilation system, and KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP) as an observation pre-processing system. As a result, the forecast performance of NCEP observation was better while the number of observation is similar to the KMA observation. In addition, the sensitivity of forecast performance was investigated for each SONDE, SURFACE and AIRCRAFT observations. The differences in AIRCRAFT observation were not sensitive to forecast, but the use of NCEP SONDE and SURFACE observations have shown better forecast performance. It is found that the NCEP observations have more wind observations of the SONDE in the upper atmosphere and more surface pressure observations of the SURFACE in the ocean. The results suggest that evenly distributed observations can lead to improved forecast performance.

  • A study was conducted to investigate the availability of Fitts' Law to Hangul input systems on mobile phones. Three different Hangul input systems were experimented to measure the performance time to evaluate the physical interface of all. The measured performance time was found to be well fitted with the modified Fitts' Law by Hangul input systems on mobile phones. As a result, the physical interfaces for Hangul input systems could be evaluated quantitatively with the prediction of the performance time by Fitts' Law.

  • This study is intended to suggest an ideal direction of the information systems policy for the local small business firms. In an effort to accomplish this objective, this paper tried to identify the current states of the information systems and measure the level of the information systems of local small business firms based on the maturity stage and the development level. The study then explored the evidence how the maturity stage and the development level affect the business performance of the local small business firms. The research found out that the organizational factor such as the support of CEO and the financial factor such as IS investment took major roles to improve the business performance. Based on the research findings of this study, the paper suggested the desirable solution of the information system policy to deal with the problems the local small business firms need to overcome.
