  • This paper describes a web-based system called DESIGNER for the analysis and design for automated material handling equipment(MHE) applications in manufacturing. DESIGNER models the processes for system integration, economic analysis, performance analysis, and automated storage/retrieval system(AS/RS) design. Based on the information specified by users, the various analysis modules are invoked to meet the needs of the material handling applications. The results of the analyses provide system users with useful data for material handling system design and decision on investment in automated MHE. Example problems are also presented to demonstrate the use of the system.

  • In this paper, we validate simulation results for the design optimization of a Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) intended for use in Medium Voltage Direct Current systems (MVDC). With the increasing integration of renewable energy and grid connections, researchers are focusing on medium-voltage systems for balancing energy in new and renewable energy networks, rather than traditional transmission or distribution networks. Specifically, for DC distribution networks dealing with fault currents that must be rapidly blocked, current-limiting systems like superconducting current limiters offer distinct advantages over the operation of DC circuit breakers. The development of such superconducting current limiters requires finite element analysis (FEM) and an extensive design process before prototype production and evaluation. To expedite this design process, the design outcomes are assimilated using a Reduced Order Model (ROM). This approach enables the verification of results akin to finite element analysis, facilitating the optimization of design simulations for production and mass production within existing engineering frameworks.

  • A preliminary design approach for superyachts is introduced. The state-of-the-arts of superyachts is investigated and their characteristics are indirectly examined by analyzing the data collected from built vessels. The analysis of data provides a guideline for the establishment of an preliminary hull form of a superyacht. The rules and regulations governing the design and construction of superyachts are collected and considered. A modeling approach for prompt and efficient design is also introduced. A sample hull form of a selected superyacht is constructed using commercial design packages not only to produce a hull form but to analyze the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic performances of the constructed vessel. Various visualization techniques are considered as an efficient tool for design verification.

  • The deployable reflector antenna consists of 24 unit main reflectors, and is mounted on a launch vehicle in a folded state. This satellite reaches the operating orbit and the antenna of satellite is deployed, and performs a mission. The deployable reflector antenna has the advantage of reduce the storage volume of payload of launch vehicle, allowing large space structures to be mounted in the limited storage space of the launch vehicle. In this paper, structural analysis was performed on the main reflector constituting the deployable reflector antenna, and through this, the initial conceptual design was performed. Lightweight composite main reflector was designed by applying a carbon fiber composite and honeycomb core. The laminate pattern and shape were selected as design variables and a design that satisfies the operation conditions was derived. Then, the performance of the lightweight composite reflector antenna was analyzed by performing detailed structural analysis on modal analysis, quasi-static, thermal gradient, and dynamic behavior.

  • The light-weight design of UTM (Urban Transit Maglev)-02 car-body frames are performed, based on initial configuration. The thicknesses of fourteen sub-structures are defined as design variables and the loading condition is considered according to weight of sub-structures, electronic and pneumatic modules and passengers. For efficient and robust process of design optimization, objective function and constraints are approximated by response surface approximation. Structural analysis is performed at some sampling points to construct the approximated objective function and constraints composed of design variables. Design space is changed to find many optimal candidates and best optimal design can be found eventually. The Matlab Optimization Toolbox is used to find optimal value and sensitivity analysis about each design variable is also performed.

  • In safety-critical systems (SCS), failure may result in accidents with serious damage to human beings and property. As systems become more complex and automated, the goal of acquiring safety has attracted increasing attention lately in the defense industry, as well as the rail, automotive, and aerospace industries, among others. As such, the Department of Defense and international organizations have established appropriate standards and guidelines for systems safety and design. To this end, there has been research on the processes, methods, and associated tools for safety design. However, those results do not seem to sufficiently utilize system architectural information. The purpose of this paper is to provide a more systematic approach to SCS design. To better identify potential hazards, design information at each level of system hierarchy is exploited. Based on the results, an integrated process model was developed by combining the processes of system design and safety analysis. As a case study, the resultant integrated process model was applied to the safety design of an automobile system, which shows useful results for safety evaluation.

  • Management of risks is critical issue in the project management and it is important to ensure that risk management is done in a sensible way. Risk analysis is an activity geared towards risk mitigation in risk management technique. Many techniques to manage, analyze and reduce risks have been done previously but only few have addressed the design analysis to reduce risk and none have attempted to analyze architecture to manage risks. In this paper we try to find a solution through various analyzing various software architectural design concepts. We follow Pressman's method of analyzing architecture design, and then alter it to identify risks which are used in risk analysis process further in risk management process. The risks assessed are analyzed later in the risk management cycle.

  • This paper proposes a simpler solution to the stabilization problem of a special class of nonlinear underactuated mechanical systems which includes widely studied benchmark systems like Inertia Wheel Pendulum, TORA and Acrobot. Complex internal dynamics and lack of exact feedback linearizibility of these systems makes design of control law a challenging task. Stabilization of these systems has been achieved using Energy Shaping and damping injection and Backstepping technique. Former results in hybrid or switching architectures that make stability analysis complicated whereas use of backstepping some times requires closed form explicit solutions of highly nonlinear equations resulting from partial feedback linearization. It also exhibits the phenomenon of explosions of terms resulting in a highly complicated control law. Exploiting recently introduced Dynamic Surface Control technique and using control Lyapunov function method, a novel nonlinear controller design is presented as a solution to these problems. The stability of the closed loop system is analyzed by exploiting its two-time scale nature and applying concepts from Singular Perturbation Theory. The design procedure is shown to be simpler and more intuitive than existing designs. Design has been applied to important benchmark systems belonging to the class demonstrating controller design simplicity. Advantages over conventional Energy Shaping and Backstepping controllers are analyzed theoretically and performance is verified using numerical simulations.

  • An alternative approach to the design of application-driven fuzzy systems is proposed. A broad class of fuzzy systems applications requires a certain fuzzy partition of the input space while it demands for simple numerical quantities. For this class, a dedicated fuzzy system archictecture is presented and a design strategy is proposed. Both the single-input/single-output and multi-input/multi-output cases are considered. Numerical analysis are complete illustrating several aspects of the proposed framework.

  • High temperature vacuum furnaces or high standard electric furnaces demand high technology level and high production cost. Therefore, an iterative design process and the optimization approach under integrated computing environment are required to reduce the development risk. Moreover, it also required to develop an integrated design software that can manage the centralized database system between factory and design department, and the automated furnace design and analysis. The developed software is dedicated to the development of the vacuum (electric) furnaces. Based on the distribute middleware system, the GUI module, the CAD module, the thermal analysis module and the optimization module are integrated. For the DBMS, Microsoft Access is employed, the GUI is developed using Visual Basic language, and AutoCAD is utilized for the configuration design. By investigating the analysis code interface, the analysis and optimization process, and the data communication method, the overall system architecture, the method to integrate the optimizer and ana lysis codes, and the method to manage the data flow are proposed and verified through the optimal furnace design.
