  • This paper deals with the basic problem in developing the robot for spot welding. The robot for spot welding is different with other robots by the heavy handling equipment which is attached to the wrist end of the robot. Differences in the robot body and controller are discussed. Welding equipments which make large effect to the system performance are reviewed.

  • A servo gun welding system having a AC servo motor and a PC control system is presented for the improvement of quality control in the spot welding. The spot welding process is composed of the press stage, the weld stage, and the hold stage. The changes of gun press forces according to three stages in the spot welding process are controlled and measured through the load cell in order to know the influence on the welding quality. The relation between the measured force changes according to three stages and welding qualities is also implemented on the multilayer perceptrons, one of supervised learning method of neural network, which are powerful for realization of complex mapping characteristics.   • In order to inspect the quality of spot welding, inefficient destructive test and NDT (non destructive testing) utilizing expensive foreign ultrasonic inspection are being conducted in the automobile production lines, but NDT will be difficult to be used in the domestic automobile production due to complexity of the waveform analysis and lack of mobility. In this paper, NDT system inspecting the quality of spot welding based on mobile network is proposed to complement drawbacks of the conventional inefficient destructive testing and NDT inspecting the quality of spot welding. Regardless of daily condition of NDT tester, the proposed NDT system can determine the quality of spot welding automatically and transmit the information of NDT quality to smart devices of field workers in real-time so that convenience of NDT and productivity of automobile production will be improved. Several specimens with a variety of welding quality was produced to evaluate the performance of the proposed mobile ultrasonic NDT system and the conventional foreign equipment, through this experiments, the proposed mobile ultrasonic NDT system indicate the superior properties compared to the conventional equipment in terms of convenience, productivity, and economic.

  • Resistance spot welding using air gun has been used for joining the sheet metal in automotive manufacturing process. Although air gun has many advantages, it also has the limitation to control the pressure as a factor to improve weld quality. In this study, we apply servo gun using servo motor to resistance spot welding and find the relationship between welding pressure and welding quality. Trough the experiment to change welding pressure during the welding cycle, we can make it clear that the change of welding pressure is greatly influence on the welding quality. To get in a. using response surface methodology, drew out the optimal welding pressure profile for welding quality progresses. We made an optimal profile of welding pressure which improves welding quality using response surface methodology.

서보건을 이용한 알루미늄 합금의 저항 점용접 (Spot Welding of Aluminum Alloys Using Servogun)

  • Conventional method for electrode force application in resistance spot welding(RSW) processes is to use pneumatic cylinder. However, due to its inherent problems in pneumatic power system such as compressibility of air and poor transient response characteristics, new electrode force system with servo control are recently introduced in RSW machine. This machine is called “servogun”. The purpose of this study is to evaluate performance of servogun in case of spot welding of aluminum alloy. Aluminum alloy(A5052) sheets are spot welded using pneumatic gun and servogun. Both results are compared by means of macro cross-section etching test and tensile shear strength test. Numerous previous research have reported nugget with many voids and cracks are not uncommon defects in spot welds with aluminum alloy. The experimental results show similar defects in case of pneumatic gun. In contrast, use of servogun considerably reduced generation of voids and cracks. In case of step-wise increased forging force at the end of welding cycle with servogun, crack-free and void-free nuggets have been observed. The performance of servogun has been also verified by series of tensile shear test. Higher strength values have been achieved with servogun in comparison to that of pneumatic gun.

인장-전단 하중을 받는 점용접부의 피로 수명 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fatigue Life Evaluation of Spot Welded Joints under Tensile-Shear Loading)

  • The spot welding method has been used in the joining of structures, automotive body, railway carriage, aircraft, household electric appliances, precision parts etc., because of brief working, easy automation, available mass production, and convenience. In this paper, the effects of welding conditions on the fatigue life and the prediction of fatigue life based on fracture mechanics theory of spot welded joint were investigated. Fatigue tests were conducted with the tensile-shear specimens welded in the various current using cold rolled steel sheets. Fatigue life of spot welded joint was predicted and compared with experimental results. Using FEM(finite element method), we analysed the distribution of stress and the condition of deformation on the environments of nugget.

  • The resistance spot welding of high strength steel degrades the weldability because of its high strength with rich chemical composition and coating layer to protect from corrosion. And the weld Expulsion is prone to occur and severely affect the nugget guality when the initial gap between automatic borrowing galvanied steel sheets(SGARC35) and Zn-coateel trip steels(GA580TRIP and GA980 TRIP) exist in resistance spot welding(RSW). RSW is one of the most popular welding processes used to join sheet metals. but weld guality sometimes do creases due to welding condition. in this paper to verity tue weldability using spot welding with the hemispherically concaved electrode, tensile shear strength and cross-tensile strength were measured by a universal test machine. in addition, the nugget size on cross-sectional area of the weld was observed by optical and electron microscopy. As a result, the nugget size of this specimen is increased with increasing welding current and Max load of tensile-shear strength is increased with welding current is increasing.

Effect of Initial (Reference) Welding Current for Adaptive Control and It's Optimization to Secure Proper Weld Properties in Resistance Spot Welding

  • Many automotive companies are endeavoring to improve the quality of resistance spot welding by updating body-in-white (BIW) production line with adaptive control spot welding system to compensate the process disturbances such as gap, electrode wear, oxidized surfaces, poor fit up and adhesive etc. Most of the commercial adaptive weld controllers require proper "Initial Welding Schedule" or "Reference weld" to achieve compensation in welding parameters during real time welding. In this study, the compensation of a commercial adaptive weld controller had been observed and analyzed thoroughly for various process disturbances to find optimal initial welding schedule. It was observed that 90 percent of the expulsion current in constant current control as reference welding schedule conferred the maximum button diameter in adaptive control welding. Finally, effects of each disturbance in combined field disturbances system with adaptive control had also been confirmed with the design of experiment (DOE) by minitab(R)16 for combined disturbances situation and suitability of optimum initial weld current had also established with real body part validation test.

  • Resistance spot welding has been widely used in the sheet metal joining processes because of low cost, high productivity and convenience. Recently, automobile and aerospace industries are trying to replace partly steel sheets with aluminum alloy sheets. But in the case of dissimilar materials, to apply resistance spot welding has been known to be very difficult owing to the effect of melting temperature. On this study, an effort was made to apply spot welding of dissimilar sheet metals, 2024 aluminum alloy and zinc coated steel sheet, evaluate the spot weld quality with tensile-shear strength test and nondestructive evaluation technique, C-scan image methodology. In this study results, as the current below 11 kA, melting of materials is not achieved well. Also as the current exceeds to 13.5 kA, the more spatters happen at welded zone and tensile-shear strength lowered. So, the feasibility of C-scan image technique proposed in the study is found to be suitable evaluation method for resistance spot weldability.

  • 본 논문은 인버터 AC 스폿용접시스템의 용접시간을 최소화하기 위한 방법에 관한 것이다. 기존의 SCR 회로방식을 이용한 스폿용접시스템의 경우 제어속도가 느리고 전류제어가 정밀하지 않다. 따라서 최근에는 인버터를 이용한 용접시스템이 점차 증가하고 있다. 2차전지의 전극과 같은 박판을 용접해야 하는 경우에는 용접시간이 수 [ms] 정도로 짧아야 한다. 수 [ms] 정도로 용접시간을 최소화하면서 수 천 [A]에 달하는 대전류를 흘리기 위해서 일반적으로 수십개의 스위칭 소자들을 병렬로 연결하여 사용하기도 한다. 본 논문에서는 단지 4개의 IGBT로 구성된 인버터와 60[Hz] 변압기만으로 수 [ms] 대의 용접이 가능한 비용절감형 용접시스템을 제안하고 특성을 분석하였다. 그리고 실험을 통하여 타당성과 효용성을 입증하였다.
