The validity of friction factor theory, based upon conventional-sized passages for microchannel flows, is an active area of research. The high surface to volume ratio of a microchannel offers many advantages over macroscale devices and processes. This study focused on the laminar flow (16$161{\mu}m$ to $664{\mu}m$ for single-phase liquid flow. A controllable syringe pump was used to provide flow while a differential pressure transducer was used to record the pressure drop. These results demonstrated that a 3D printer can drastically simplify custom microchannel fabrication and still support complex features, which are typically only accessible with advanced fabrication techniques.
Objectives : In order to find a possible non-invasive manipulation tool for maintenance of the cardiovascular functions in hemorrhagic shock, this study was aimed at evaluating effects of acupoints acupressure on the changes in blood pressure and heart rate from an animal model of hemorrhagic shock. Methods : In adult Sprague-Dawley rats, hemorrhagic shock was induced by a withdrawal of arterial blood from the femoral artery with volume of 0.8 ml per 100 g of body weight using peristaltic syringe pump. We applied the acupressure with a pressure oscillator to tail as a control and 2 different acupoints of sobu(HT8), youngchun(KI1) under 3 different conditions : 1) normal arterial blood pressure without bleeding, 2) at the beginning of bleeding, and finally 3) hemorrhagic shock. Results : Under normal arterial blood pressure without hemorrhage, there was a significant increase in systolic and diastolic blood pressures by the acupressure to the tail, HT8 and especially KI1 for 30 sec compared with before acupressure. Under hemorrhagic shock condition, the tail acupressure had minimal changes in cardiovascular parameters. Either the HT8 or KI1 acupressure resulted in a significant increase in arterial pressure but did not heart rate. At the beginning of bleeding, tail acupressure failed to change the reduction of arterial pressure and heart rate. However, there was a significant increase in blood pressure and heart rate following either the HT8 or especially KI1 acupressure. Conclusions : HT8 and KI1 acupressure affected cardiovascular signs but tail acupressure did not in rat model of hemorrhagic shock. These experimental data suggest that a acupressure with a pressure oscillator to HT8 or KI1 can be one of alternative emergency manipulations to ameliorate compromised cardiovascular functions under hemorrhagic shock condition.
In this paper. we have studied improvement in sensitivity by increasing the frequency of SAW sensors for detecting the immobilization and hybridization of DNA. The sensor consists of twin SAW delay lines operating at 200MHz, a sensing channel and a reference channel. fabricated on $36^{\circ}$ rotated Y-cut X-propagation $LiTaO_3$ crystals. The optimum concentration of probe and target DNA was decided for the improvement of detection mechanism. and digital syringe pump system was used to reduce the human errors. The hybridization between immobilized probe DNA and target DNA on the gold-coated delay line results in mass loading on the delay line of the sensing channel. Thus, the relative frequency change was monitored in relation to the mass loading. The measurement results showed a good response of the sensor to the DNA hybridization with a maximum sensitivity level up to 0.066ng/m1/Hz.
Purpose: As PET test came to be covered by the pay system of medical insurance (July 1, 2006) and the needs for it becoming increased for laboratory purpose, it became necessary to purchase expensive medical equipments to solve those problems. However, as most of equipments that are operated by cyclotron are very expensive as to amount from tens of millions up to hundreds of millions of won, it is difficult to purchase those equipments from the point of medical organizations. It may be possible to self manufacture those equipments with least costs if their parts functions that meets the operators demands. The Nuclear Medicine department of National Cancer Center (NCC) is trying to manufacture and use equipments that can be made with least costs, including introducing 2 medical equipments that can improves the operator's works. Materials and Methods: Example 1: Self production of radioisotope($^{18}F$) divider was fabricated. The NCC's Nuclear Medicine department acquired one acrylic panel, seven 3-way valve, tubing etc. that can be found in the market to make the main body of divider in cooperation with biomedical engineering, and placed them inside hot cell, and installed switching box outside of hot cell to make it possible to control them from outside. This main body of divider were placed in radioisotope transfer line that are manufactured in the cyclotron. Example 2: Self production of $^{18}F$-FDG automated divider was fabricated. The NCC's Nuclear Medicine department used cavro pump syringe that consists the main body of divider in cooperation with biomedical engineering, biomedical engineering developed programs that divides a certain amount. $^{18}F$-FDG automated divider is placed inside hot cell, and cable chords were used in the equipment, and then it was connected to PC outside hot cell to make it possible to control the $^{18}F$-FDG automated divider. Results: From the NCC's Nuclear Medicine department tests that were carried out from March, 2007 until now, we found out that radioisotope can be sent to radiopharmaceuticals composite module we want, and from the tests that are carried out at NCC's Nuclear Medicine department using $^{18}F$-FDG automated divider since August, 2009 it was possible to distribute radiopharmaceuticals into vial intended. Conclusion: Through the two examples above, we found out that costs can be reduced by self manufacturing expensive equipments from NCC's cyclotron room with least costs. Also, it decreased radiation exposure dose on workers, and set up problem solving processes in cooperation with lots of parties related.

The Fontan operation is a heart operation used to treat complex congenital heart defects like tricuspid atresia, hypoplastic left heart syndrome, pulmonary atresia and single ventricle. A single ventricle is dedicated to pumping oxygenated blood to the systemic circulation and the entire systemic venous return reaches the pulmonary arterial system without the direct influence of a pumping chamber. In the patient with Fontan operation, it is important to achieve adequate pulmonary blood flow and cardiac output in anesthetic management. In this case, a 10-year-old boy (19.6 kg, 114 cm) with cleft palate, cerebral palsy and severe mental retardation, who underwent a Fontan operation when he was 4 years old, was presented for deep sedation. Because he was suffering from eating disorder with cleft palate, the orthodontist and the plastic surgeon planned to insert intraoral orthodontic device before cleft palate repair. But it was impossible to open his mouth for alginate impression procedure. After careful pre-anesthesia evaluation we planned to administer deep sedation with propofol infusion. After Intravenous catheter insertion, we started propofol intravenous infusion with the formula of a loading dose of 1.0 mg/kg followed by an infusion rate of 6.0 mg/kg/hr with syringe pump. His blood pressure was remained around 80/40 mmHg after loss of consciousness, but he could not maintain his airway patent. So we lowered the infusion rate to 3.0 mg/kg/hr, immediately. The oxygen saturation was maintained above 95% with nasal oxygen supply, and blood pressure was maintained around 100-80/60-40 mmHg. After the sedation of 110 minutes with propofol (the infusion rate to 3.0-5.0 mg/kg/hr), he fully regained consciousness, and was discharged without complication after 1 hour observation. In case of post-Fontan patient, intravenous deep sedation with propofol was safe and effective method of behavioral management during dental treatment.
Ergosterol is the significant component of the cell wall of fungi. Its presence is regarded as evidence of fungi contamination in grain and other foods. Many studies on ergosterol detection have been carried out using chemical methods, but those methods required complicated pre-treatments and long analysis times. In this study, an amperometric biosensor was developed for fast and precise ergosterol detection. The biosensor system used the electron transfer of hydrogen peroxide produced from the reaction of ergosterol with cholesterol oxidase. The biosensor system consisted of a peristaltic pump, a syringe loading sample injector, an enzyme reactor, a fabricated flow-through cell containing a working electrode, a reference electrode and a counter electrode, and a potentiostat/recorder. The working electrode was prepared by coating modified multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWNT) on glassy carbon electrode. The $MWNT-NH_2$ coated glassy carbon electrode linearly responded to hydrogen peroxide in the range of $1{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}8{\times}10^{-5}$ M with a detection limit of $10^{-7}$ M in the basic performance test. The currents produced from the ergosterol biosensor showed the linearity in a range from $1.0{\times}10^{-6}$ M to $1.0{\times}10^{-5}$ M ergosterol.
Poly(epichlorohydrin) copolyol series (PECH copolyols) were synthesized via cationic ring-opening copolymerization (ROCP) of oxirane-based monomers and effects of reaction temperature, solvent type, and initiator were studied. As a comonomer, two types of alkylene oxides were used, and polymerization conditions were conducted both with diethylene glycol (DEG) as an initiator in methylene chloride (MC) solvent and tripropylene glycol (TPG) in toluene solvent. In order to induce the active monomer (AM) mechanism in the ring-opening copolymerization reaction, the monomer was injected by an incremental monomer addition (IMA) method using a syringe pump, and the polymerization was performed at -5 ℃. PECH copolyol, a synthesized ephichorohydrin (ECH)-based copolyol, was converted to glycidyl azide-based energy-containing copolyol (GAP copolyol) by azadizing the ECH unit through a substitution reaction. It was confirmed that the synthesized azide copolyol had little effects on changes of the solvent and the initiator. Also, the molecular weight increased 500 after the azide reaction, thereby the GAP copolyol was polymerized as designed. As the content of the comonomer increased, both the Tg and viscosity tended to decrease due to the influence of the alkyl chain length. It is possible to fundamentally prevent CH3N3 amount produced in the azide reaction process, and it is expected that a large-scale process could be achievable.

Background : To do dental treatments successfully for dentally disabled patients who are unable to cooperate to procedures needs deep sedation (DS) or general anesthesia (GA). But there are some difficulties in selecting DS because of some disadvantages such as airway problem etc. But, if we select appropriate cases, DS would be better than GA. Methods : We reviewed total 238 cases of patients who had received dental treatments under GA or DS at the clinic for the disabled in Seoul National University Dental Hospital from November 2007 to February 2009. To compare anesthesia condition between DS and GA, we reviewed preanesthesia evaluation sheet, anesthesia or sedation records and PACU sheets retrospectively. Results : The number of DS cases was 25 (11%) and that of GA was 218 (89%). To maintain DS, intravenous propofol was infused with syringe pump (100%), and sevoflurane (134 cases) or propofol (13 cases) were used for sedation induction. Mean total treatment time for DS was 36 min and 2 hour 25 min for GA. The recovery time at PACU was 44 min for DS and 80 min for GA. There were no severe complications in DS, but 18 cases showed nausea and vomiting in GA. Conclusion : Deep sedation for disabled dental patients should be selected for effective behavioral control in conjunction with general anesthesia, considering duration and pain-evoking potentials of dental treatment and type and severity of patients' disabilities altogether.

This study is to develop the production method of stepwise dilution gas for the evaluation of complex odor concentration by orifice tube. The basic orifice tube for 10 and 30 times of dilution sample was made at first, and with the combination of the basic orifice tubes we can continuously manufacture the stepwise dilution sample gas for air dilution sensory test ; 10, 30, 100, 300, 1,000, 3,000 times etc. The hole size of orifice tube was 0.84 mm for 10 times of dilution sample, and was 0.34 mm for 30 times. Dilution sample gas made with the basic orifice tube have an excellent reproducibility, 2%RSD. In addition, over 90% of correlation was shown between the sample made by the orifice tube and the sample by the syringe dilution method. Because there was no concentration drift of dilution gas with changes of connected pump flow, the basic orifice tube could be mounted directly with a vacuum suction box, and could be used simply as a tool for the evaluation of odor, especially on site.

A high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization (HPLC-ESI) tandem MS was developed for the rapid and simultaneous determination of forbidden medicines in dietary supplements. Thirteen medicinal components such as PDE-5 inhibitors and their analogues, and the newly identified dimethylsildenafil and xanthoanthrafil, were included in this study. After tentative standardization of molecular ions in both polarities using thirteen references on the mass spectrometer, with ESI-continuous infusion via the syringe pump method, the relative intensity of the ions present in the resulting spectra was quantitatively compared. From the results, the ion mode was selected depending on each reference's characteristics. A HPLC method coupled with the ESI mode was developed considering the matrix effect and interference depending on the type of sample. The validation test of the developed method was followed by carrying out precision, accuracy, recovery, sensitivity and linearity, etc. The method showed sufficiently high sensitivity, reproducibility, and specificity, and produced 4 times faster results when compared with the existing HPLC/UV method for the determination of forbidden compounds in dietary supplements.
