  • The development of thermoelectric (TE) materials to replace Bi2Te3 alloys is emerging as a hot issue with the potential for wider practical applications. In particular, layered Zintl-phase materials, which can appropriately control carrier and phonon transport behaviors, are being considered as promising candidates. However, limited data have been reported on the thermoelectric properties of metal-Sb materials that can be transformed into layered materials through the insertion of cations. In this study, we synthesized FeSb and MnSb, which are used as base materials for advanced thermoelectric materials. They were confirmed as single-phase materials by analyzing X-ray diffraction patterns. Based on electrical conductivity, the Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity of both materials characterized as a function of temperature, the zT values of MnSb and FeSb were calculated to be 0.00119 and 0.00026, respectively. These properties provide a fundamental data for developing layered Zintl-phase materials with alkali/alkaline earth metal insertions.

  • In this study, bulk nickel-carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites are synthesized by a novel method which includes a combination of ultrasonication, electrical explosion of wire in liquid and spark plasma sintering. The mechanical characteristics of the bulk Ni-CNT composites synthesized with CNT contents of 0.7, 1, 3 and 5 wt.% are investigated. X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques are used to observe the different phases, morphologies and structures of the composite powders as well as the sintered samples. The obtained results reveal that the as-synthesized composite exhibits substantial enhancement in the microhardness and values more than 140 HV are observed. However an empirical reinforcement limit of 3 wt.% is determined for the CNT content, beyond which, there is no significant improvement in the mechanical properties.

  • Half-heusler phase ZrNiSn is one of the potential thermoelectric materials for high temperature application. In an attempt to investigate the effect of Sb doping on thermoelectric properties, half-heusler phase $ZrNiSn_{1-x}Sb_x$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.08$) was synthesized by mechanical alloying of stoichiometric elemental powder compositions, and consolidated by vacuum hot pressing. Phase transformations during mechanical alloying and hot consolidation were investigated using XRD. Sb doped ZrNiSn was successfully produced in all doping ranges by vacuum hot pressing using as-milled powders without subsequent annealing. Thermoelectric properties as functions of temperature and Sb contents were evaluated for the hot pressed specimens. Sb doping up to x=0.04 in $ZrNiSn_{1-x}Sb_x$ was shown to be effective on thermoelectric properties and the figure of merit (ZT) was shown to reach to the maximum at x=0.02 in this study.

  • Dense nanostructured $NbSi_2$ was synthesized by high-frequency induction-heated combustion synthesis (HFIHCS) method within 1 minute in one step from mechanically activated Nb and Si powders. Highly dense $NbSi_2$ with relative density of up to 99% was simultaneously synthesized and consolidated under the combined effects of an induced current and mechanical pressure of 60 MPa. The average grain size and mechanical properties (hardness and fracture toughness) of the compound were investigated.

  • Synthesized monocrystalline nanodiamond (nD) particles are heat-treated at various temperatures to produce highly structured diamond crystals. The heat-treated nDs show different weight loss ratios during thermogravimetric analysis. The crystallinities of the heat-treated nDs are analyzed using Raman spectroscopy. The average particle sizes of the heat-treated nDs are measured by a dynamic light scattering (DLS) system and direct imaging observation methods. Moreover, individual dispersion behaviors of the heat-treated nD particles are investigated based on ultrasonic dispersion methods. The average particle sizes of the dispersed nDs according to the two different measurement methods show very similar size distributions. Thus, it is possible to produce highly crystallized nD powder particles by a heat-treatment process, and the nD particles are relatively easy to disperse individually without any dispersant. The heat-treated nDs can lead to potential applications such as in nanocomposites, quantum dots, and biomedical materials.

  • TiN and AlN are ceramic materials with extensive applications due to its excellent mechanical and chemical properties at elevated temperature. The purpose of this research is to develop the method for the synthesis of ternary nitride powder, titanium-aluminum-nitrogen system, which have an excellent property of both TiN and AlN. The ternary nitride such as $Ti_3AlN$, $Ti_2AlN$ and $Ti_3Al_2N_2$ can be synthesized by the interdiffusion nitriding method in Ar gas, however, the ternary nitride coexist with TiN, AlN, $Ti_3Al$ and ${\alpha}$-Ti. The ternary nitride are stable below $1400^{\circ}C$, but these are gradually decomposed into TiN, $Ti_3Al$ and AlN above $1400^{\circ}C$. The thermal oxidation characteristics of the Ti-Al-N compound synthesized by the interdiffusion nitriding method is superior to that of the TiN+AlN mixed powder, and the oxidation for both materials show the differential behaviors.

  • Silica powders were synthesized using emulsion solution containing water, nonionic surfactant of Triton N-57, and cyclohexane. Silica powders were prepared at low cost using inexpensive starting material of sodium silicate and ammonium sulfate. Morphology, size and size distribution were observed and determined using SEM. The powder was identified as silica by FT-IR and XRD analysis. Particle size and size distributions were affected by concentration of reactants, reaction time, and concentration of surfactant. Particle size were increased with increasing concentration of reactants and particles became dense with increasing reaction time. As R value increased, tile particle size was increased, reached a certain value and then decreased again. The silica powders synthesized under optimum condition were spherical in shape, $0.8{\mu}m$ in average particle size, narrow in particles size distribution, and well dispersed.

  • Gallium oxide nano-powder, the key starting material for IGZO target, is fabricated by gas phase synthesis using a new apparatus consist of reaction, transportation, and collection parts. As a result of gallium metal evaporation above 1150℃, Ga2O3 nano-powders, are successfully synthesized. The SEM images of the synthesized powders displace the spherical shaped powders without severe agglomeration. X-ray diffraction and PSA analysis show that the higher temperature at the reaction part results in the better crystallinity and larger powder size of the synthesized Ga2O3. To see the applicability to IGZO target, Ga2O3 nano-powders synthesized at 1250℃ are mixed with indium oxide and zinc oxide (In2O3 : Ga2O3 : ZnO = 1 : 1 : 1), and then sintered at 1400~1500℃. The highest sintered density of 5.83 g/㎤ (= 91 % of relative density) is achieved when sintered at 1450℃, showing better sinterability compared to the commercially available Ga2O3 powder, which has 5.61 g/㎤ of sintered density at the same condition.
