  • This paper discusses two important issues of corpus-based synthesis: synthesis unit generation based on phrase break strength information and pruning redundant synthesis unit instances. First, the new sentence set for recording was designed to make an efficient synthesis database, reflecting the characteristics of the Korean language. To obtain prosodic context sensitive units, we graded major prosodic phrases into 5 distinctive levels according to pause length and then discriminated intra-word triphones using the levels. Using the synthesis unit with phrase break strength information, synthetic speech was generated and evaluated subjectively. Second, a new pruning method based on weighted vector quantization (WVQ) was proposed to eliminate redundant synthesis unit instances from the synthesis database. WVQ takes the relative importance of each instance into account when clustering similar instances using vector quantization (VQ) technique. The proposed method was compared with two conventional pruning methods through objective and subjective evaluations of synthetic speech quality: one to simply limit the maximum number of instances, and the other based on normal VQ-based clustering. For the same reduction rate of instance number, the proposed method showed the best performance. The synthetic speech with reduction rate 45% had almost no perceptible degradation as compared to the synthetic speech without instance reduction.

  • In the authors' preceeding paper, an improved component mode synthesis (CMS) technique in which experimental data as well as finite-element data are available in sub-systems has been proposed. Thi s technique, called an improved experimental free-interface method (IEFIM), has been proved to be more accurate and more efficient than the conventional experimental CMS method based on McNeal's formulation. It is due to the facts that dynamic residual terms as well as static ones are compensated from experimentally obtained FRFs and that FRFs measured on any frequencies can be used for the compensation. In this paper, the technique is applied to the component mode synthesis of a car body structure. As a result, the applicability of the technique to a large structure is demonstrated.

  • This paper presents a robust method for facial image synthesis under varying illumination by combining illumination correction and Poisson image processing techniques. The presented method automatically detects skin area and corrects highly saturated regions that can cause bad effects on the final synthesis image. The developed method can be applied to various facial synthesis applications by correcting illumination variations that can occur frequently on photos taken with a camera phone.

  • In this paper, we propose an array pattern synthesis scheme using semidefinite programming (SDP) under array excitation power constraints. When an array pattern synthesis problem is formulated as an SDP problem, it is known that an additional rank-one constraint is generated inevitably and relaxed via semidefinite relaxation. If the solution to the relaxed SDP problem is not of rank one, then conventional SDP-based array pattern synthesis approaches fail to obtain optimal solutions because the additional rank-one constraint is not handled appropriately. To overcome this drawback, we adopted a bisection technique combined with a penalty function method. Numerical applications are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • Post-synthesis is used to synthesize organic hybrid inorganic mesoporous sieves. In this method, the activity and structure of the base sieve are crucial to obtain the definable hybrid materials. The chemical and physical properties of the base can be largely changed either by the final step of its synthesizing processes, by template removal which is accomplished with the oxidative thermal decomposition (burning) method or by solvent extraction method. In this paper we compared two methods for the post-synthesis of organic hybrid MCM-48. When the template was extracted with HCl/alcohol mixture, the final product showed larger pore size, larger pore volume and better crystallinity compared to the case of the thermal decomposition. The reactivity of the surface silanol group of template free MCM-48 was also checked with an alkylsilylation reagent $CH_2=CHSi(OC_2H_5)_3$. Raman and $^{29}Si$ NMR spectra of MCM-48 in the test reaction indicated that more of the organic group was grafted to the surface of the sample after the template was removed with the solvent extraction method. Direct synthesis of vinyl-MCM-48 was also investigated and its characteristics were compared with the case of post-synthesis. From the results, it was suggested that the structure and chemical reactivity can be maintained in the solvent extraction method and that organic grafting after the solvent extraction can be a good candidate to synthesize a definable hybrid porous material.

  • In a speech coding system using excitation source of voiced and unvoiced, it would be involved a distortion of speech quality in case coexist with a voiced and an unvoiced consonants in a frame. So, I propose TSIUVC(Transition Segment Including Unvoiced Consonant) searching and extraction method in order to uncoexistent with a voiced and unvoiced consonants in a frame. This paper present a new method of TSIUVC approximate-synthesis by using Least Mean Square and frequency band division. As a result, this method obtain a high quality approximation-synthesis waveforms within TSIUVC by using frequency information of 0.547KHz below and 2.813KHz above. The important thing is that the maximum error signal can be made with low distortion approximation-synthesis waveform within TSIUVC. This method has the capability of being applied to a new speech coding of Voiced/Silence/TSIUVC, speech analysis and speech synthesis.

  • In this paper, using one method of Additive Synthesis, Analysis-by-synthesis/Overlap-Add (ABS/OLA) method, analysis and synthesis of musical tones is processed. But peak detection of frequency domain is processed by proposed method considering the view of acoustics. It is that that harmonics frequency is times of main frequency. Using this fact, peak detection of frequency domain is useful for detection of tonal component identified musical note. It is possible to realize high-quality lour bit rate audio.

  • Adaptive controllers for linear system whose nominal values of coefficients only are known, that is corrupted by disturbance, are designed by signal synthesis model reference adaptive control (MRAC). This design is stemmed from the Lyapunov direct method. To reduce the model following error and to improve the conrergence rate of the design, an indirect suboptimal control law is de rived using the Hamilton Jacobi Beellman equation. Proper compensaton for the effects of time varying coefficients and plant disturbance are suggested. In the design procedure no complete identification of unknown coefficients are required.
