  • To upgrade the subjective question grading, we need the syntactic-semantic analysis to analyze syntatic-semantic relation between words in answering. However, since the syntactic-semantic tree has structural and semantic relation between words, we can not apply the method calculating the similarity between vectors. This paper suggests the comparing system with syntactic-semantic tree which has structural and semantic relation between words. In this thesis, we suggest similarity calculation principles for comparing the trees and verify the principles through experiments. This system will help the subjective question grading by comparing the trees and be utilized in distinguishing similar documents.

  • This longitudinal study analyzed syntactic development (Complexity, Accuracy, and Fluency; CAF) of six L2 Korean learners in a natural learning context. The learners recalled the stories of a short animated video through speaking and writing every 3 months, from month 0 to 15. The learners' responses were analyzed for a series of CAF measures and their cognitive, psychological, and social variables were investigated. The results showed that (i) L2 Korean learners' speaking and writing in various time periods showed significant differences in spoken and written accuracy, and complexity; (ii) the correlation between spoken and written complexity, spoken and written accuracy, as well as spoken and written fluency were significant, and (iii) the regression analysis showed that learners' cognitive, social, and psychological variables have significant effect on the L2 Korean syntactic development. The current study reports that L2 Korean learners engaged in self-learning in a natural learning environment without formal instruction made significant syntactic development.

  • In information society, the need to detect document duplication and plagiarism is increasing. Many studies have progressed to meet such need, but there are limitations in increasing document duplication detection quality due to technological problem of natural language processing. Recently, some studies tried to increase the quality by applying syntatic-semantic analysis technique. But, the studies have the problem comparing syntactic-semantic trees. This paper develops a syntactic-semantic tree comparator, designs and implements a discriminator of similar documents using the comparator. To evaluate the system, we analyze the correlation between human discrimination and system discrimination with the comparator. This analysis shows that the proposed discrimination has good performance. We need to define the document type and improve the processing technique appropriate for each type.

  • This study investigates issues in relation to text segmenting, in particular, line breaks in Korean language textbooks. Research on L1 and L2 reading has shown that readers process texts by chunking (grouping words into phrases or meaningful syntactic units) and, therefore, phrase-cued texts are helpful for readers whose syntactic knowledge has not yet been fully developed. In other words, it would be important for language textbooks to avoid awkward syntactic divisions at the end of a line, in particular, those textbooks for beginners and intermediate level learners. According to our analysis of a number of major Korean language textbooks for beginner-level learners, however, many textbooks were found to display line-breaks of awkward syntactic division. Moreover, some textbooks displayed frequent instances where a single word (or eojeol in the case of Korean) is split between different lines. This can hamper not only learners' learning of the rules of spaces between eojeols in Korean, but also learners' development in automatic word recognition, which is an essential part of reading processes. Based on the findings of our textbook analysis and of existing research on reading, this study suggests ways to overcome awkward line-breaks in Korean language textbooks.

  • Natural language query is the best user interface for the users of information retrieval systems. This paper Proposes a retrieval system with expanded keyword from syntactically-analyzed structures of user's natural language query based on natural language processing technique. Through the steps combining or splitting the compound nouns based on syntactic tree traversal, and expanding the other-formed or shorten-formed keyword into multiple keyword, the system performance was enhanced up to 11.3% precision and 4.7% correctness.

  • Most of Korean sentences are complex sentences which consisted of main clause and embedded clause. These complex sentences have more than one predicate and this causes various syntactic ambiguities in syntactic analysis. These ambiguities are caused by phrase attachment problems which are occurred by the modifying scope of embedded clause. To resolve it, we decide the scope of embedded clause in the sentence and consider this clause as a unit of syntactic category. In this paper, we use sentence patterns information(SPI) and syntactic properties of Korean to decide a scope of embedded clause. First, we split the complex sentence into embedded clause and main clause by the method that embedded clause must have maximal arguments. This work is done by the SPI of the predicate in the embedded clause. And then, the role of this embedded clause is converted into a noun phrases or adverbial phrases in the main clause by the properties of Korean syntax. By this method, the structure of complex sentence is exchanged into a clause. And some phrases attachment problem, which is mainly caused by the modifying scope, is resolved easily. In this paper, we call this method clausal segmentation for embedded clause. By empirical results of parsing 1000 sentences, we found that our method decreases 88.32% of syntactic ambiguities compared to the method that doesn't use SPI and split the sentence with basic clauses.

  • Recently, most Korean syntactic analysis systems use Dependency Grammar, because it is quite good to analysis of Korean language structures. But Dependency Grammar makes many ambiguities during syntax analysis of Korean. We implement a system which decreases many ambiguities in syntax analysis. To decrease ambiguities we suggest several methods. First, we use about 200 dependency rules, second, we suggest a new segmentation method and third, one predicate can not have more than one subject or object. Using these methods, we can reduce many ambiguities in Korean syntactic analysis.

  • A method of on-line recognition of Korean characters (Hangeul) by augmented conterxt free grammar is described in this paper. Syntactic analysis with context free grammar oftern has ambiguity. Insufficient description of relations among Hangrul sub-patterns causes this ambiguity can be determined through repetition of experiments. Flexible syntactic analysis is executed by adapting the condition to the (advice)part of augmented context free grammar. The ratio of correct recognition of this method is more than 99%.

  • It is not easy to find out syntactic error in a spelling checker systems of Korean, because the spelling checker is generally to correct each phrase and it cannot check the errors of contextual ill-matched words. Spelling checker system tests errors based on a words. Disambiguation of lexical ambiguities is important in natural language processing. Its outputs is used in syntactic analysis. For accurate analysis of a sentence, syntactic analysis system must find out the ambiguity of morphemes in a word. In this paper, we suggest several rules to resolve the ambiguities of morphemes in a word. Using these methods, we can reduce many lexical ambiguities in Korean.

  • In this study, the intellectual structure of Records Management and Archival Science in Korea was analyzed based on the syntactic and semantic structure analysis of article titles. The data used in this study were 344 articles from three major representative journals in the field of Records Management and Archival Science, published from 1999 to 2008. The results of the syntactic and semantic structure analysis of article titles show that the three role concepts of keywords are 'research domain', 'research object', and 'research focus'. Keywords in article titles were clustered into the core subject areas after they were assigned three concepts. Based on the results of cluster analysis, the intellectual structure of Records Management and Archival Science in Korea was proposed.
