  • The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the compositional elements of plan of art museums by selecting architectural works, which have strong symbolic meaning when evaluating value, from architectural works by Louis Kahn. First, the centrality of artworks, which are being displayed at the Yale Art Gallery, is complex. It includes three patterns of Void (spatial) Centrality+Symbolic Centrality+Functional Centrality among the five patterns suggested in this study. Second, the ratio system of interior space, which is expressed in the extension of the Yale Art Gallery, can be classified into the floor and walls. The floor used the square 1:1 ratio system. The ceiling used the grid patterns of equilateral triangles (regular tetrahedrons). It was applying a geometric ratio system when creating forms by using one side as a beam and the other sides as decorations of the ceiling. Third, the contours of interior space, which were expressed in Kahn's works, used the method of forming separate space according to the contouring rule (structural unit) defined by columns, and they were used in constructing the entire space through the integration of separate spaces. Fourth, according to the characteristics that were expressed by artworks displayed within the Yale Art Gallery Extension, the concept of accessibility was not as clear as that of residential buildings, because an approach of respecting existing architecture and context was used, rather than the starting point of interior space, or differentiated circulation, which has the function of a determined position.

  • Purpose: Since the 19th century many concrete models and theories for the ideal city had been proposed and in some way had affected on the ideal urban plans in the 20th century. Modern cities in the 20th century faced a total chaos, due to the world war and new social paradigm came from the development of technology. These social context leads us to be interested in ideal city. And two planned cities; Chandigarh, India and Brasilia, Brasil, are meaningful as the result of the modern ideal city in the early 20th century even though they completed just in part. Method: This study is focused on the characteristics of the modern ideal city in the early 20th century based on comparison with two realized cities. There are similarities and differences in their background, concept, and the characteristics of form and space. Result: First, both cities are required to make monumental and symbolic images by political issues. For this, Le Corbusier proposed the grid system for a metaphorical city and L. Costa defined the urban form with abstract axis for a mythological city. Second, the administrative districts in both cities are planned as symbolic places by formative buildings and their hierarchical arrangement. For neighbourhood unit 'Sector' in Chandigarh and 'Superquadras' in Brasilia are used for the neighbourhood unit respectively. Third, the car-oriented road system and urban environment by population overcrowding in tow cities are criticized in common. Consequently, as we can see, the modern ideal city in the early 20th century succeeds in making symbolic urban image, but exposes the limitation of sustainability.

  • This study investigated the architectural expression of Taekpungdang(澤風堂, The Pond and Wind House) built by the Neo-Confucianist Taekdang Lee Sik(澤堂 李植, 1584~1647) from the perspective of the symbolic system of the Zhōuyì(『周易』, Classic of Changes). This study examined the historical context, personal history, and construction process of Taekpungdang at the time of its creation through his collection of writings, the Taekdanggip(澤堂集). The study also estimated the original form of Taekpungdang through field surveys and historical evidence. In addition, the architectural principles and architectural expressions inherent in the Taekpungdang were derived based on the symbolic system of "taekpungdaegwa"(澤風大過) which is Lee Sik's divination and one of the 64 trigrams in the Zhōuyì. Lee Sik, who was knowledgeable in the Zhōuyì, used divination to cope with the chaotic political situation and his own misfortunes. Accordingly, He determined the direction of his life and planned the surrounding environment, architectural structure, and form of Taekpungdang based on the rules and meanings of his divination system. He embodied the architectural space of Taekpungdang with the concept of time and space inherent in the divination of "daegwa",(大過, great exceeding). In addition, he expressed the principle of the generation of palgue,(八卦, the eight trigrams for divination) and the principle of the co-prosperity of ohaeng(五行, the five elements) through the composition of walls and windows of the house. The images of Taekpungdaegwae, which are dongyo(棟撓 wood submerged in the pond) and taekmyeolmok(澤滅木, shaking pillars), were manifested in the form of buildings. Therefore, Taekpungdang can be considered a remarkable example of a building designed through the thorough utilization of the Zhōuyì divination system.

  • This study is about the analysis on symbolic meaning and kunstwollen of Issey Miyake's art works which is influenced by various external factors such as social and cultural background, nationality and philosophy. Especially, this research focused on 'Pleats Please Issey Miyake' and 'A Piece of Cloth' which are the core of his works. The most important concept of Issey Miyake's works is the relationship of human body and a piece of cloth. Miyake's clothes has provided the time and the space where inspires the vitality into wearer. He accomplishes the most perfect beauty through incomplete beauty of cloth. Miyake wants to express the emotion of the human being through his clothes and tries to make special code between creator, wearer and viewer. Fashion is accomplished in connection with human body, not exists just as 'clothes'. Fashion has valued as an art which expresses the ideology and the sentiment of human being most directly. Issey Miyake who has tried to express human life and emotion has promoted fashion as an important part of art. Miyake is accepting and delivering the history and culture, expressing and communicating empathy, and combining the different fields harmoniously.

  • This study focuses on the characters and spacial expressions from the film , one of the representative works of the Coen brothers. The esoteric narrative of the film could be analyzed by understanding the symbolic expressions present throughout the film. The unrealistic characters, spaces, and props that appear along with the main character contain a symbolic meaning and adhere to the artist's worldview. These expressions contribute to creating a unique world for the Coen brothers and significantly impacted later films. Coen brothers' other films and , similarly display the unrecognizable world that coexists with the real world and the powerful presence that dominates it within the world. This study examines the use of symbolic characters and spacial expressions shown in the representative works of the Coen brothers.

  • The general purpose programs are in their fixed algorithm and theory of mechanics which can not be altered without painful program modifications. Users are usually guided by user's manual for data input. The several symbolic manipulation programs for structural analysis are introduced recently. These programs allow users to include a wide class of solution algorithm and to specify, by means of some symbolic manipulation, a combination of analytical steps to suit a particular problem. As they can solve a single domain problem, a large computer is usually needed. The scope of this study is to develop an efficient symbolic manipulation program with space beam element, plate bending element and eigen value routines. The incorporated Substructure capability and generation capability of finite element characteristic arrays (e.g., stiffness matrix, mass matrix) enables users to analyse multidomain problem with small computer. The program consists of modulized independent processors, each having its own specific function and is easily modified, eliminated and added. The processors are efficiently handling data by the Data base approach which is the concept of integrated program network(IPN).

  • In this study we analyzed and interpreted the phenomenologlcal characteristics and meanings of water space in religious architecture through field studies and phenomenologlcal approaches, focusing on the religious architecture Introducing water space in contemporary architecture. The phenomenological experience elements of the research ate light, time, place and context. As the results of this study, first, light as a phenomenological element not only induces a contrast and change between light and the shadow in architectural space and various changes of light in inner space, but also operates as an element which expresses building features outward with time. Second, time as a phenomenological perception experience makes us feel changes of the environment and physical properties and experience space visually and physically. The continuity of time shows the change of a day, night and daytime and seasons. Third, water space makes the sense of place more remarkable, connected closely with surrounding nature In outer space, and creates a new space. Fourth, water space is a contextual element which harmonizes with surrounding environment by connecting surrounding natural environment with architectural space. Fifth, water space in religious architecture is a symbolic and central element, and emphasizes the atmosphere of architectural space. In addition, it makes the people who experience water space perceive the place by triggering sensitive response.

  • Two evolutionary gait generation methods for Cartesian and Joint coordinates space are compared to develop a fast locomotion for quadruped robots. GA(Genetic Algorithm) based approaches seek to optimize a pre-selected set of parameters for the locus of paw and initial position in cartesian coordinates space. GP(Genetic Programming) based technique generate few joint trajectories using symbolic regression in joint coordinates space as a form of polynomials. Optimization for two proposed methods are executed using Webots simulation for the quadruped robot which is built by Bioloid. Furthermore, simulation results for two proposed methods are analysed in terms of different coordinate spaces.

  • Mugiyeondang(舞沂蓮塘) is the garden that the provincial noble family in Yeongnam(嶺南) has constructed since the late Joseon period. Mugiyeondang is well known as a typical case of traditional garden in Joseon period. But it is also an exceptional case because of its informal layout that infers gradual space transition. This study aims to establish the historical story of the garden beyond the superficial description about existing spatial status and literature materials. Mugiyeondang had been constructed by seven generations of the family during two hundred years, and there were significant events at every transition points. The figure and name of elements reflects each historical change of the family. Mugiyeondang is an important case to notice that a garden was not just a subsidiary space for mere leisure life of the gentry of Joseon period, But it was an important for some families as their representative and symbolic space.
