  • This paper describes distribution characteristics of switching surge voltage in stator windings of induction motor driven by IGBT PWM inverter. To analyze the voltage distribution between the turns and coils of stator winding, equivalent circuit model of induction motor including cable was proposed and high frequency parameter is computed by using finite-element method (FEM). From the electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation of the whole system for induction motor, feeder cable, and PWM inverter, the variable effect on rising time of the inverter, cable length, and switching frequency on the voltage distribution is also presented. In order to experiment, an induction motor, 380[V], 50[HP], with taps from one phase are built to consider the voltage distribution so that these results can be helpful when filter was designed to remove high dv/dt.

  • Lightning and switching surges propagating through the grounding conductors lead to transient overvoltages, and electronic circuits in information technology systems are very susceptible to damage or malfunction from the electrical surges. Surge damages or malfunctions of electrical and electronic equipment may be caused by potential rises. To solve these problems, it is very important to evaluate the ground surface potential rises and hazardous voltages such as touch and step voltages at or near the grounding systems energized by electrical surges. In this paper, the performance of grounding systems against the surge current containing high frequency components on the basis of the actual-sized tests is presented. The ground surface potential rises and hazardous voltages depending on impulse currents for vertical or horizontal grounding electrodes are measured and analyzed. Also the touch and step voltages caused by the impulse currents are investigated. As a result, the ground surface potential rises, the touch and step voltages near the grounding electrodes are raised and the conventional grounding impedances are increased as the front time of the injected impulse currents is getting faster.

  • This paper presents a method of simulating the protection effects of surge protective devices(SPDs) depending on the protective distance and types of input impedance of load to be protected. In order to analyze the protective performances of voltage-limiting type SPDs associated with the reflection and oscillation phenomena, the terminal voltage across load being protected and the residual voltage of SPDs were simulated by using EMTP model as functions of the protective distance and types of input impedance of loads. As a consequence, SPDs should be installed by taking into account the protective distance and input impedance of loads to achieve reliable protection of electrical and electronic equipment from lightning and switching surges. It is expected that the simulation method proposed in this paper could be practically used in design for installing SPDs in low-voltage distribution systems.

  • Surge protective devices(SPDs) are widely used as a most effective means protecting the electrical and electronic equipment against overvoltages such as lightning and switching surges. When installing SPDs, it is essential that the voltage protection level provided by SPDs should be lower than the withstand voltage of the equipment being protected. But even the proper selection of SPDs are achieved, the voltage at the equipment terminal may be higher than the residual voltage of SPD due to the reflection and oscillation phenomena. This paper was focused on the investigations of the conditions for which the equipment is protected by an SPD taking into account the influences of the protective distance and type of load. The protective effects of SPD with voltage-limiting component were analyzed as functions of types of load and protective distance between the SPD and load. As a result, in the cases of long protective distances, capacitive loads and loads with high resistance, the voltage at the load terminal was significantly higher than the residual voltage of SPD. It was found that the proper installation of SPDs should be carried out by taking into account the protective distance and type of load to achieve reliable protection of electronic equipments against surges.

  • This paper dealt with the development of a surge protection device (SPD) that can protect high speed computer network devices from overvoltages caused by switching operations or lightning surges. The designed SPD is a form of hybrid circuit which is composed of a gas tube having large current diverting capability, high response bi-directional avalanche diodes, and fast recovery diodes to reduce insertion loss on high frequency domain. Surge protection and signal transmission characteristics of the fabricated SPD was tested according to the international standards, IEC 61000-4-5 and IEC 61643-21. From the test results, the SPD is satisfied with the international standards and the high cut-off frequency was 204MHz. Also, the SPD showed a good performance without an insertion loss on a field test of 100Mbps class Local Area Network

  • The main functions of AC railroad vehicles arresters is to protect the main transformer from lightening impulse or switching impulse surge, then the MOV(metal oxide varistor) elements rated of 10kA is applied. The residual voltage and surge energy absorption are important parameters in designing arrester, these must be carefully decided with considering protecting level of impulse environment of system. The purpose of this study is to discuss the residual voltages and the energy absorption capability by impulse currents on MOV elements for railroad vehicles, and to introduce design factors which act as optimal protecting condition against impulse currents.

  • SPDs are increasingly being used against lightning and switching surge according to the applicable revised standard and equipotential grounding system. SPDs are equipped usually with a MOV voltage regulating element. The MOV, however, always is exposed to the danger of thermal runaway resulting from inrushing temporary overvoltage and deterioration. In this paper, the authors made two prototype SPDs built-in Instantaneous trip device and analyzed their limiting voltage through test of the MOV breakdown. As the result of the analysis, the SPDs built-in Instantaneous trip device was proven to be effective for protecting MOV against thermal runaway and Instantaneous trip device react for limiting voltage is considered that is applicable to SPD.

  • In an electric substation, there are many sources of surge such as switching operations or lightning strokes. A grounding system submitted to such surge current presents very different behaviour from the observed under low frequency current. Especially, it has been reported that significant overvoltage occurs at the current feed-in point, and this may cause damages to other grounded components in the substation area. This paper describes the basic mechanism of improvement of grouding performance in transient state with auxiliary grounding grids.

  • Damage and upset of control and communication equipment due to transient overvoltages which occur due primarily to internal switching surge and external lightning surge are an important problems in electromagnetic compatibility(EMC). In this paper, we analyzed operation characteristic of metal oxide varistor widely used low voltage AC line using the electromagnetic transients program(EMTP) and compare it with experimental results and also, we modeled combination generator producing $1.2/50{\mu}s$ open circuit voltage and $8/20{\mu}s$ short circuit current as a source which is critical in calculating operation characteristic. Simulation results showed that most of Transient energy consumes at MOV located in service entrance side than load side, and it showed similar to experimental results. Therefore, entrance side MOV should be selected more energy capacity than that of load side MOV.

  • As transmission systems has been complicated and various, cases of transmission systems which is made up with underground cable line only or overhead transmission line with underground cable line have been increased. When transmission lines with different types of cable, it is more likely to be vulnerable to the surges. This paper analyzed these surge in 154kV transmission line by means of EMTP (Electro Magnetic Transient program).
