  • A novel design for equilateral-triangular microstrip antennas with switchable resonant frequency is proposed. For dual-frequency operation, the proposed design is achieved by loading a pair of slits in the triangular patch, and two PIN diodes are utilized to switch the slits on or off. By increasing the length of the slits, the lower resonant frequency can be varied in the range from 1.22 GHz to 1.72 GHz whereas the upper resonant frequency remains unchanged.

  • We demonstrate an electro-optical device based on the flexoelectric effect of a short-pitched cholesteric liquid crystal. By using a dual-frequency switchable nematic, a small amount of chiral dopant and a small amount of phase-separated polymer localized on the surface, we were able to create a device that operates in amplitude (flexoelectric) and phase(dielectric) modes. At high frequency the dual frequency liquid crystal suppresses the phase mode at higher voltage, which improves the switching speed, and thereby preserving the in-plane-switching mode.

  • A switchable VCO for DECT handset is designed and fabricated. In dual mode radios, a single VCO is desired to operate at two different frequencies to meet the requirement of two mode(Tx, Rx). The three design types of switchable VCO are switched resonator VCO, switched mode VCO and dual band VCO. In this paper, we use the switched resonator VCO type using pin diode switch to change the total amount of capacitance in the tank circuit. At the bias condition of 3 V and 13mA, the output power and phase noise are better than6.5dBm and -104dBc/Hz at 25khz offset from the carrier, respectively , across the operating frequency range. From these results, the fabricated switched VCO is applicable to the DECT handset.

  • In this study, we proposed a wideband frequency tunable metamaterial absorber using a switchable ground plane (SGP). We proposed two fire retardant or flame resistant 4 (FR4) substrate structures for the SGP. An SGP is placed at the middle layer, between the top pattern and the bottom ground plane. The SGP can either be made ground or reactive, by switching the PIN diode ON/OFF. As the frequency is determined by the substrate thickness, the frequency can be switched from the SGP. The proposed absorber is demonstrated by full-wave simulations and measurements. When the SGP is turned on, an absorptivity higher than 90% is achieved from 3.5 GHz to 11 GHz. When the SGP is turned off, an absorptivity higher than 90 % is achieved from 1.7 GHz to 5.2 GHz.

  • This paper describes switching method of the cross-sectional area of the fluid passage way to improve the performance of a hydraulic engine mount with an inertia track and a decoupler. The mount has nonlinear dynamic characteristics depending on the vibrational frequency and amplitude. For the convenience of analysis, two linear motion equations were derived on the basis of the mechanical model according to the low-and high-frequencies. The properties of the transmissibility and dynamic stiffness derived from the equations were investigated according to switching the cross-sectional area of the inertia track and decoupler. Switching method of the cross-sectional area can be derived from the transmissibility plot. In comparison between transmissibility of passive and switchable mounts with an inertia track and a decoupler, the performance of the switchable mount is improved greatly than the passive mount. The resonant peak is remarkably reduced in the high frequency region.

  • A novel frequency-switchable antenna that uses PIN diodes and a composite right- and left-handed transmission line (CRLH TL) is proposed. The CRLH TL provides multi-order resonance, including a zeroth-order resonance (ZOR), and its shunt stub determines the ZOR frequency. Thus, the resonant frequency is arbitrarily chosen by lumped chip inductors on the shunt stub. Two prototypes are designed using different chip inductors while maintaining the antenna geometries. Antenna #1 can switch the resonant frequency from 1.8 GHz to 2.3 GHz. Antenna #2 can switch its resonance from 0.9 GHz to 2.3 GHz.

  • A switchable Yagi-Uda antenna prototype with radiation pattern reconfiguration is presented in this letter. The proposed reconfigurable antenna is based on the concept of switching between the reflector and director of a Yagi-Uda antenna using a radio frequency PIN diode. As a result, the minimum/maximum radiation can be steered towards desired signals or away from interfering signals in opposite directions. The measured 10 dB impedance bandwidth and gain are 210 MHz (7%) and 8.02 dBi at 3 GHz, respectively. Details of the antenna design and its performance are described and empirically analyzed.

  • This paper presents a pattern-switchable microstrip patch antenna with loop structure. The loop structure for switchable radiation beam pattern is connected with feeding line of the microstrip patch antenna. As changing switch on/off state, the radiation beam pattern can be changed. The target frequency is 2.4 GHz and maximum radiation gain is 3.2dBi. The proposed antenna is useful for diversity antenna and smart antenna in modern wireless communication including MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) and WLAN system. The sizes of the rectangular patch and the ground plane are $28mm{\times}28mm$ and $40mm{\times}50mm$, respectively. The simulation and experimental results show that the antenna radiation pattern can be changed with switch on/off configuration.

  • In this paper, a new 1 kW power amplifier with high efficiency and high stability in a RF generator is designed and fabricated for plasma applications. The efficiency of power amplifier is improved by using class-E amplifier that consists of one push-pull MOSFET and high current drive IC instead of class-C amplifier composed of several single ended MOSFET. Switchable damper that allows selecting three different modes of amplifiers for considering efficiency and stability is added into the amplifier for plasma applications. Stable region of an early electronic discharge section is extended to VSWR of 4.5:1 compared to conventional VSWR of 3.8:1 through using switchable damper. The dimension of the amplifier is also reduced to 30 % of conventional amplifier. The 80 % efficiency of power amplifier with switchable damper is obtained the output power of 1 kW in operating frequency of 13.56 MHz. In comparison of conventional power amplifier for plasma applications, 13 % efficiency is improved.

  • A switchable single-wideband (SWB)-to-dual-wideband (DWB) bandpass filter (BPF), which is realized by using lumped switches, is presented in this paper. By alternating the operation modes-ON and OFF-in which the ON mode is achieved by placing the capacitors at the switching spots and the OFF mode is achieved by replacing the capacitors with inductors, DWB-to-SWB BPF can be achieved on the same device. In addition, by changing the capacitor values, the center frequency (CF) of the lower passband of DWB BPF can be easily tuned from 1.69 GHz to 2.22 GHz, while the higher passband stays almost unchanged. As an example, an SWB-to-DWB BPF is designed, fabricated, and measured. This BPF exhibits good performance including wideband, high isolation, compact size, and ability to switch.
