  • In this study, an efficient clamp is proposed to reduce the switch voltage stress of a forward converter. The proposed clamp consists of a conventional LC snubber, a tertiary winding, and a diode. When the switch is turned OFF, the magnetizing inductor energy of the transformer is recovered directly into the flyback output, which is the tertiary winding and diode network, instead of circulating in the LC snubber. Therefore, switch voltage stress and circulating current caused by the magnetizing inductor energy are reduced. This condition improves the efficiency of the forward converter with limited switch voltage stress. A theoretical analysis and the design guidelines of the proposed converter are provided. Experimental results are also reported.

  • This paper presents a single switch, high step-up, non-isolated dc-dc converter suitable for renewable energy applications. The proposed converter is composed of a coupled inductor, a passive clamp circuit, a switched capacitor and voltage lift circuits. The passive clamp recovers the leakage inductance energy of the coupled inductor and limits the voltage spike on the switch. The configuration of the passive clamp and switched capacitor circuit increases the voltage gain. A wide continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation range, a low turn ratio for the coupled inductor, low voltage stress on the switch, switch turn on under almost zero current switching (ZCS), low voltage stress on the diodes, leakage inductance energy recovery, high efficiency and a high voltage gain without a large duty cycle are the benefits of this converter. The steady state operation of the converter in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) is discussed and analyzed. A 200W prototype converter with a 28V input and a 380V output voltage is implemented and tested to verify the theoretical analysis.

  • In lieu of the excellent radio frequency (RF) performance of microelectromechanical system ( MEMS) switches, these micro switches need higher actuation voltage for their operation. This requirement is secondary to concerns over the swtiches’ reliability. This paper reports high reliability operation of RF MEMS switches with low voltage requirements. The proposed switch is optimised to perform in the Q-band, which results in actuation voltage of just 16.4 V. The mechanical stress gradient in the thin micro membrane is computed by simulating von Mises stress in a multi-physics environment that results in 90.4 MPa stress. The computed spring constant for the membrane is 3.02 N/m. The switch results in excellent RF performance with simulated isolation of above 38 dB, insertion loss of less than 0.35 dB and return loss of above 30 dB in the Q-band.

  • A conventional active-clamp forward (ACF) converter is a favorable candidate in low-to-medium power applications. However, the switches suffer from high voltage stress, i.e., sum of the input voltage and the reset capacitor voltage. Therefore, it is not suitable for high input voltage applications such as a front-end converter of which the input voltage is about 400-$V_{dc}$. To solve this problem, three-switch ACF (TS-ACF) converter, which employs two main switches and one auxiliary switch with low voltage stress, is proposed. Utilizing low-voltage rated switches, the proposed converter is promising for high input voltage applications with high efficiency and low cost.

  • This paper presents the theory, design, fabrication and characterization of the novel low actuation voltage capacitive shunt RF-MEMS switch using a corrugated membrane with HRS MEMS packaging. Analytical analyses and experimental results have been carried out to derive algebraic expressions for the mechanical actuation mechanics of corrugated membrane for a low residual stress. It is shown that the residual stress of both types of corrugated and flat membranes can be modeled with the help of a mechanics theory. The residual stress in corrugated membranes is calculated using a geometrical model and is confirmed by finite element method(FEM) analysis and experimental results. The corrugated electrostatic actuated bridge is suspended over a concave structure of CPW, with sputtered nickel(Ni) as the structural material for the bridge and gold for CPW line, fabricated on high-resistivity silicon(HRS) substrate. The corrugated switch on concave structure requires lower actuation voltage than the flat switch on planar structure in various thickness bridges. The residual stress is very low by corrugating both ends of the bridge on concave structure. The residual stress of the bridge material and structure is critical to lower the actuation voltage. The Self-alignment HRS MEMS package of the RF-MEMS switch with a $15{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$ lightly-doped Si chip carrier also shows no parasitic leakage resonances and is verified as an effective packaging solution for the low cost and high performance coplanar MMICs.

  • In this paper, a new soft-switching Two-switch Forward converter topology has been proposed. Compared with conventional two-switch forward converter, the proposed converter employs an auxiliary switch and a clamp capacitor to instead of two reset diodes, not only its duty cycle can exceed 0.5 to achieve wide range input voltage, but also soft switching can be achieved for all switches. Especially, voltage stress across main switches can be clamped at $1/2V_{in}$, voltage stress across auxiliary switch can be clamped at $V_{in}$. In addition, due to clamp capacitor series with the transformer, duty ratio can be extended with equation $V_o=\frac{V_{in}(1-D}D{N}$. Therefore, as a kind of better cost-effective approach, it is very attractive for high input, wide range and high efficiency application.

  • In this paper, a new zero-current-transition (ZCT) circuit cell is proposed. The main switch is turned-off under the zero current and zero voltage condition, and there is no additional current stress and voltage stress in the main switch and the main diode, respectively. The auxiliary switch is turned-off under the zero voltage condition, and the main diode is turned-on under the zero voltage condition. The resonant current required to obtain the ZCT condition is relatively small and regenerated to the input voltage source. The operational principles of a boost converter integrated with the proposed ZCT circuit cell are analyzed and verified by the simulation and experimental results.

  • A new family of zero-voltage-transition converters with synchronous rectification is introduced in this study. Soft switching condition for all the converter operating points is provided in the proposed converters. The reverse recovery losses of the rectifier switch body diode are also eliminated. In comparison with the main switch voltage stress, the auxiliary switch voltage stress is reduced significantly. The auxiliary switch does not need the floating gate drive. The auxiliary inductor is coupled with the main converter inductor, and the leakage inductor is used as the resonance inductor. Thus, all inductors of the proposed converter can be implemented on a single core. The other features of the proposed converters include no extra voltage and current stresses on the main converter semiconductor elements. Theoretical analysis for a synchronous buck converter is presented in detail, and the validity of the theoretical analysis is justified with the experimental results of a prototype buck converter with 180 W and 80 V to 30 V.

  • In this paper, a high step-up DC-DC PWM converter with continuous input current and low voltage stress is presented for renewable energy application. The proposed converter is composed of a boost converter integrated with an auxiliary step-up circuit. The auxiliary circuit uses an additional coupled inductor and a balancing capacitor with voltage doubler and switching capacitor technique to achieve high step-up voltage gain with an appropriate switch duty cycle. The switched capacitors are charged in parallel and discharged in series by the coupled inductor, stacking on the output capacitor. In the proposed converter, the voltage stress on the main switch is clamped, so a low voltage switch with low ON resistance can be used to reduce the conduction loss which results in the efficiency improvement. A detailed discussion on the operating principle and steady-state analyses are presented in the paper. To justify the theoretical analysis, experimental results of a 200W 40/400V prototype is presented. In addition, the conducted electromagnetic emissions are measured which shows a good EMC performance.
