This paper is the third investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in a steady flow bench. In the previous works, several assumptions used in the steady flow bench were examined and the flow characteristics were estimated both by the conventional impulse swirl meter and a particle image velocimetry at 1.75B position. From these works, it was concluded that the assumption of the solid rotation might cause serious problems and both of the eccentricity and the velocity profile distort the flow characteristics when using the ISM at 1.75B plane. Therefore, the understanding of the detail velocity profiles is very important to keep discussing the issues about the steady flow evaluation method. For this purpose, the planar velocity profiles were measure at 1.75B position by particle image velocimetry and the characteristics were examined according to the valve angles and lifts. The results show that the planar velocity profiles of 11, 16, $21^{\circ}$ valve angle heads according to the lift are similar to each other, however, that of $26^{\circ}$ angle is an exceptional case in the all aspects. In addition, the swirl behaviors are not apparent up to 6~8 mm lift under the $21^{\circ}$ angle and somewhat arranged motions are observed over the whole plane near the highest lift. At this point, the narrower the angle, the lower the lift at which the swirl motions become clear. On the other hands, when the angle is $26^{\circ}$, the center of swirl is always farthest from the cylinder center and only the indistinct swirl is observed even if at the highest lift. Also, all the swirl centers are quite apart from the cylinder center so that the effect of eccentricity may not be negligible at 1.75B regardless the valve angle. Related to the tangential velocity along with the radial direction, the bands of the velocity distribution are very wide and the mean velocities of cylinder center basis are lower than the velocity which is assumed in the ISM evaluation. Lastly, the mean tangential velocity profiles of swirl center basis are sometimes higher than that of ISM-assumed up to 0.6 non-dimensional distance less than 6mm lift, however, as the lift increases the profiles are different according to the angles and profile $11^{\circ}$ is the most closed to the ideal profile. Consequently, the real velocity profile is far from the assumption of ISM evaluation.
Flow and spray characteristics are critical factors that affect the performance and exhaust emissions of a direct injection diesel engine. It is well known that the swirl control system is one of the useful ways to improve the fuel consumption and emission reduction rate in a diesel engine. However, until now there have only been a few studies on the effect of flow on spray. Because of this, the relationship between the flow pattern in the cylinder and its influence on the behavior of the spray is in need of investigation. First, in-cylinder flow distributions for 4-valve cylinder head of DI (Direct Injection) Diesel engine were investigated under steady-state conditions for different SCV (Swirl Control Valve) opening angles using a steady flow rig and 2-D LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry). It was found that swirl flow was more dominant than that of tumble in the experimented engine. In addition, the in-cylinder flow was quantified in terms of swirl/tumble ratio and mean flow coefficient. As the SCV opening angle was increased, high swirl ratios more than 3.0 were obtained in the case of SCV -70° and 90°. Second, spray characteristics of the intermittent injection were investigated by a PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometer) system. A Time Dividing Method (TDM) was used to analyze the microscopic spray characteristics. It was found that the atomization characteristics such as velocity and SMD (Sauter Mean Diameter) of the spray were affected by the in-cylinder swirl ratio. As a result, it was concluded that the swirl ratio improves atomization characteristics uniformly.
A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to propose the optimum design of flow mixing vane on the space grid in a PWR fuel assembly. The flow mixing vanes considered in this study for optimum design are swirl-vane and twisted-vane. A single subchannel of one grid span was modeled using flow symmetry to minimize the computational effort. The CFD predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results for the split- vane, which shows the applicability of the CFD method. The mixing effect by swirling flow and crossflow, and the pressure drop were estimated and compared for the various vane angles. The optimum vane angle is proposed to be 40。 and 35。 from the direction of axial flow for the swirl-vane and the twisted-vane, respectively.

For the Purpose of understanding the mixing phenomena of a GDI(Gasoline Direct Injection) engine, the spray behaviors and fuel distributions were investigated in a single cylinder transparent GDI engine. The experimental engine is a swirl type GDI engine with a SCV(Swirl Control Valve). PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) system with KrF Excimer laser was used for the measurement of the fuel distributions. The effects of SCV opening angles and the injector specifications on the fuel distribution characteristics were investigated. As a result, it was found that the SCV opening angle had a great effect on the fuel distributions in the late stage of compression process by changing the flow fields in the combustion chamber.
The characteristics plasma flow of an atmospheric plasma torch used for thermal plasma processing is studied. In general, it is produced by the arc-gas interactions between a cathode tip and an anode nozzle. The performance of non-transferred plasma torch is significantly dependent on jet flow characteristics out of the nozzle. In this work, the distribution of gas flow that goes out to the atmosphere through a plenum chamber and nozzle is analyzed to evaluate the performance of atmospheric plasma torch. Numerical analysis is carried out with various angles of an inlet flow which can create different swirl flow fields. Moreover, the size of plasma plume is experimentally depicted.

The objective of this work is to study the improvement of etching characteristics in wet etching process. The etching characteristics such as etching factor were investigated under different etching conditions and compared with the spray characteristics. The spray characteristics of nozzle with different geometries such as swirler angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio were analyzed by using PDA system to predict the effect of the spray characteristics on the etching factor. The swirler angles were 49,5$^{\circ}$, 63$^{\circ}$ and 76.5$^{\circ}$. The swirl chamber aspect ratios were 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0. It was found that the etching factor was correlated with the spray characteristics and also the smaller swiller angle, the larger etching factor became.

In order to investigate spray characteristics of gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors, a phase detection optical probe is employed to obtain the spatial evolution of the drop size and velocity. From the study on the optical probe responses under various impact angles, it is demonstrated that the drop size and velocity can be measured with an uncertainty less than 15% when the probe axis remains within about ${\pm}15^{\circ}$ of the drop velocity direction. This typical uncertainty is in good agreement with a previous study. It is also shown that the drop sizes measured by the optical probe are in accord with those evaluated by image processing techniques. Finally, the experiments with the optical probe are performed in dense sprays, as it were, in the near field of gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors. Some experimental results are presented and discussed to be of help to understanding of spray characteristics of the injectors.

The atmospheric pressure plasma is regarded as an effective method for surface treatments because it can reduce the period of process and doesn't need expensive vacuum apparatus. The performance of non-transferred plasma torches is significantly depended on jet flow characteristics out of the nozzle. In order to produce the high performance of a torch, the maximum discharge velocity near an annular gap in the torch should be maintained. Also, the compulsory swirl is being produced to gain the shape that can concentrate the plasma at the center of gas flow. In this work, the distribution of gas flow that goes out to atmosphere through a plenum chamber and nozzle is analyzed to evaluate the performance of atmospheric pressure plasma torch which can present the optimum design of the torch. Numerical analysis is carried out with various angles of an inlet flow velocity. Especially, three-dimensional model of the torch is investigated to estimate swirl effect. We also investigate the stabilization of plasma distribution. For analyzing the swirl in the plenum chamber and the flow distribution, FVM (finite volume method) and SIMPLE algorithm are used for solving the governing equations. The standard k-model is used for simulating the turbulence.

The flow and combustion characteristics in a premixed swirl combustor with a double cone burner are numerically analyzed to adopt a swirler model. The internal recirculation zone formed at the burner exit can be realized by a swirler with inner and outer diameters of 56 and 152 mm, respectively, and accordingly, the flow rate and radial velocity were determined. To select the tangential velocity, swirl and recirculation angles are introduced. A tangential velocity of 40 m/s produces an internal recirculation zone similar to that in a combustor. At the liner exit, the errors in temperature and velocity are 2.8% and 0%, respectively, and they are negligibly small. However, NOx emissions are underestimated by 67% in the numerical results obtained using the swirler model. Although considerable quantitative errors are induced by the swirler model, it can be useful numerical model for the EV burner because it can approximately simulate the essential flow and combustion characteristics in a premixed swirl combustor with a double cone burner and it is expected to make combustion analysis efficient in a gas turbine combustor with complex geometries.
The swirl spray for direct-injection spark-ignition (DISI) engines was investigated using a nozzle whose exit surface shape was cut with a certain tapered angle. The reason for the change in spray's characteristics at various tapered angles was explained by the data correlating the taper and flow angles. The spray tended to shift its characteristics from the symmetric to asymmetric when the tapered angle was increased; furthermore, the spray penetration and spray cone angle were also increased. When the tapered angle was greater than the $90^{\circ}$ minus flow angle, an opened hollow cone spray was formed because of the fuel impingement against the tapered surface area of the nozzle exit. This behavior indicates that the reduction in the air pressure difference between the inner and outer spray of the spray can be achieved. This behavior also promises the potential use of the tapered nozzle for the case where the independence of the spray performance from atmospheric pressure and fuel temperature is desired.
