Sustaining the Technopolis: The Case of Austin, Texas

  • In "Creating the Technopolis: High Technology Development in Austin Texas," Smilor, Kozmetsky, and Gibson (1988) make the case that in the mid-1980s Austin was becoming a globally competitive high tech region. Indeed over the years and into 2013, Austin has established its reputation as a leading entrepreneurial and technology center and "talent magnet." Delegations from across the US and worldwide visit Austin to better understand how this central Texas city went from being a state government and university town to become a fast growing, globally competitive, technology hotspot leading the state and nation in job creation. Central to the concept of the Triple Helix and Technopolis Frameworks is the importance of university, business, and government cooperation. This paper gives examples of mechanisms, processes, and metrics on how The University of Texas at Austin; regional technology industry; federal, state, and local government policies; and support groups all contributed to growing and sustaining the Austin Technopolis.

High Frequency and High Luminance AC-PDP Sustaining Driver

  • Plasma display panels (PDPs) have a serious thermal problem, because the luminance efficiency of a conventional PDP is about 1.5 1m/W and it is less than $3\~5\;lm/W$ of a cathode ray tube (CRT). Thus there is a need for improving the luminance efficiency of the PDP. There are several approaches to improve the luminance efficiency of the PDP and we adopted a driving PDP at high frequency range from 400kHz up to over 700kHz. Since a PDP is regarded as an equivalent inherent capacitance, many types of sustaining drivers have been proposed and widely used to recover the energy stored in the PDP. However, these circuits have some drawbacks for driving PDPs at high frequency ranges. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the parasitic components on the PDP itself and on the driver when the reactive energy of the panel is recovered. Various drivers are classified and evaluated based on their suitability for high frequency drivers. Finally, a current-fed driver with a DC input voltage bias is proposed. This driver overcomes the effect of parasitic components in the panel and driver. It fully achieves a ZVS of all full-bridge switches and reduces the transition time of the panel polarity. It is tested to validate the high frequency sustaining driver and the experimental results are presented.

  • A new high efficiency active clamp forward converter suitable for the sustaining power module(SPM) of a plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed. It has a wide zero voltage switching (ZVS) range without inserting additional resonant inductor. Also, it features simpler structure, lower cost, less mass, and no effective duty loss. Furthermore, voltages across all rectifier diodes are clamped on the output voltage, which results in a higher efficiency.

  • A new High Efficiency splitted sustaining driver for Plasma Display Panel (PDP) is proposed. The proposed circuit is suitable for the large screen PDP. The features of the proposed circuit are zen voltage switching (ZVS) of all main power switches, the reduction of reaction power loss for energy recovering, the stable light emission and simple structure.

Comparative Study on a Single Energy Recovery Circuits for Plasma Display Panels (PDPs)

  • Comparative study on a low cost sustaining driver with single and dual path energy recovery circuits for plasma display panels (PDPs) is shown in this paper. The cost of PDPs has been still high and about half of the cost has been occupied by driving circuit. A simple sustaining driver is proposed to reduce the cost and size of driving circuit. The proposed driver has small number of devices and reactive components and there are two methods for charging and discharging PDPs such as single and dual path energy recovery circuits. A comparative research on two-types of energy recovery path is practiced to evaluate performance. As a result, the dual energy recovery path circuit has low power consumption, low surge current and high performance. To verify those results, experiment will be shown with 42-inch HD panel.

  • This paper proposes a new sustaining driver for AC PDP(Plasma Display Panel), which improves the performance of conventional circuit with reduced sustain voltage such as TERES(TEchnology of REciprocal Sustainer). In the TERES circuit, the sustain voltage is the half of general sustaining driver and there is no energy recovery circuit. The circuit proposed in his paper has an energy recovery circuit and removes surge currents. Although the energy recovery circuit is added, the number of active switching elements is the same as the TERES circuit. The operations of the proposed circuit are analyzed for each mode and its validity is verified by the simulations using PSpice program.

간호대학생의 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인 (Factors Influencing on the Attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment of Nursing College Students)

  • 본 연구는 간호대학생의 생명의료 윤리의식, 좋은 죽음 인식, 삶의 의미에 대한 태도가 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 확인하기 위한 서술적 조사연구이다. 본 연구의 대상자는 P시에 있는 1개의 간호학과 재학생 293명을 대상으로 2018년 5월 01일부터 5월 11일까지 2주간 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS WIN 22.0의 빈도와 백분율, 평균과 표준편차, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression을 이용하여 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도는 생명의료 윤리의식(r=.266, p<.001), 좋은 죽음 인식(r=.373, p<.001), 삶의 의미(r=.122, p=.037)와 양의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 삶의 의미는 생명의료 윤리의식(r=.294, p<.001), 좋은 죽음 인식(r=.230, p<.001)과 양의 상관관계를 나타냈으며, 좋은 죽음 인식은 생명의료 윤리의식(r=.306, p<.001)과 양의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 유의한 요인은 생명의료 윤리의식(${\beta}=.16$, p=.004), 좋은 죽음 인식(${\beta}=.32$, p<.001)으로 나타났으며, 이러한 요인들은 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도를 16.0% 설명하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 간호대학생들의 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도의 변화를 위해서는 생명의료 윤리의식과 좋은 죽음 인식에 대한 태도를 긍정적으로 높이기 위한 교육 프로그램을 개발하는 것이 필요하고, 다양한 영향요인을 탐색하기 위한 반복적 연구가 요구된다고 생각된다.

  • 본 연구는 간호대학생을 대상으로 좋은 죽음 인식, 자아존중감, 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도가 생명의료윤리 의식에 미치는 영향을 확인하기 위해 시도되었다. 연구참여자는 B시의 간호대학생 154명을 대상으로 하였다. 자료분석은 SPSS 22.0 프로그램을 이용하여 실수, 백분율, 평균, 표준편차, t-test, ANOVA, 피어슨 상관계수, 다중회귀분석으로 분석하였다. 대상자의 생명의료윤리 의식은 2.87±0.26점이었고, 일반적 특성에 따른 생명의료윤리 의식의 차이를 분석한 결과 종교(t=-2.90, p=.004)에서 유의한 차이를 나타냈다. 연구대상자의 생명의료윤리 의식은 좋은 죽음 인식(r=.27, p=.001), 자아존중감(r=.36, p<.001)과는 정적상관관계를, 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도(r=-.27, p<.001)와는 부적상관관계를 나타냈다. 대상자의 생명의료윤리 의식에 영향을 미치는 요인은 좋은 죽음 인식(β=.26, p<.001), 자아존중감(β=.29, p<.001), 연명치료 중단에 대한 태도(β=-.30, p<.001), 종교(β=.20, p=.004)로 나타났고, 설명력은 28.7%로 나타났다. 본 연구결과를 통하여 간호대학생을 대상으로 생명의료윤리 의식에 영향을 미치는 요인을 확인하기 위한 반복연구가 필요하다.

  • The purpose of this case study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the disruptive innovation strategy based on the Resources Process Values(RPV) theory for a successful firm. Disruptive innovations seemed not initially perform well enough to be sold or used successfully in markets. The products and services used disruptive technologies have not been as effective as those used in the established markets. However, they have other attributes such as simplicity, convenience, and low cost, which appeal to a new, small and initially unattractive set in new or low-end applications. The Hyundai Heavy Industries Co.(HHI) performed the Jubail Industrial Harbour Project(JIHP), which built the Open Sea Tanker Terminal(OSTT) in Saudi Arabia, using the disruptive innovation strategy in order to lower the manufacturing cost of the offshore jacket and to complete the project successfully. The HHI developed the design and drawing systems to manufacture the jacket and also developed the HYundai Jacket Analysis System(HYJAS) software to use the structural analysis against stresses from rolling and pitching of the barge while transporting the jacket by sea.

  • A new PWM-controlled quasi-resonant converter for high efficiency PDP sustaining power module is proposed in this paper. The load regulation of the proposed converter can be achieved by controlling the ripple of the resonant voltage across the resonant capacitor with hi-directional auxiliary circuit, while the main switches are operating at the fixed duty ratio and fixed switching frequency. Hence, the waveform of currents can be expected to be optimized on the conduction loss. Furthermore, the proposed converter shows the good ZVS capability, simple control circuits, no high voltage ringing problem of rectifier diodes, no DC offset of the magnetizing current and low voltage stress of power switches. In this paper, operational principles, analysis and design considerations are presented. Experimental results demonstrate that the output voltage can be controlled well by the auxiliary circuit as PWM method.
