  • In this study, effect of sputtering on the plasma-nitriding substrate and before PVD coating on the microstucture, microhardness, surface roughness and the adhesion strength of CrZrN thin films were investigated. Experimental results showed that this sputtering process not only removed surface compound layer which formed during a plasma nitriding process but also induced an alteration of the surface of plasma nitrided substrate in terms of microhardness distribution, surface roughness. This in turn affected the adhesion strength of PVD coatings. After sputtering, microhardness distribution showed general decrease and the surface roughness became increased slightly. The critical shear stress measured from the scratch test on the CrZrN coatings showed an approximately 1.4 times increase in the adhesion strength through the sputtering prior to the coating and this could be attributed to a complete removal of compound layer from the plasma nitrided surface and to an increase in the surface roughness after sputtering.

  • In this study, the effect of surface treatment of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites) on the shear strength of CFRP/metal composites was investigated. The surface of 14 plied unidirectional (0-dog ) CFRP was treated by an $Ar^{/}$ + ion beam under an oxygen environment. Shear strength tests were performed using SLS (Single Lap Shear) specimens based on the ASTM D906-94a procedure. The shear strength of the surface-treated CFRP/metal composites was compared with that of the untreated CFRP/metal composites. The results showed that the shear strength of surface-treated CFRP/metal composites was 36% greater than that of untreated CFRP/metal composites.

  • Objective: Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) decreases the bond strength of resin composite. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of antioxidant and superficial dentin surface removal on the microtensile bond strength of NaOCl-treated dentin. Materials and Methods: Twenty non-carious human third molars were used in this study. The dentin surfaces were treated with 5.25% NaOCl for 10 min, followed either by treatment with 10% ascorbic acid or superficial dentin surface removal. Two-step self-etch adhesive and resin composite were used for restoration. The bonded specimens were subjected to the microtensile bond strength test. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (p < 0.05). Results: The bond strength after removal of the superficial dentin surface following NaOCl irrigation was similar to that in the control group. The group treated with 10% ascorbic acid demonstrated significantly higher bond strength than the other groups. Conclusion: NaOCl irrigation-induced reduction in dentin bond strength could be recovered by either treatment with 10% ascorbic acid or simple removal of the superficial dentin surface.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of repeated surface treatments on wettability and surface roughness for zirconia surface and bond strength of zirconia-based ceramics to resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seventy blocks (10 × 10 × 3 mm) of zirconia-based ceramics were fabricated and divided into two groups according to the surface treatments: (A) 110 ㎛ Al2O3 airborne-particle abrasion and (R) 110 ㎛ silica modified Al2O3 airborne-particle abrasion. At stage 2, each group was subdivided into 5 groups according to the surface retreatments: (a) 110 ㎛ Al2O3 airborne-particle abrasion, (r) 110 ㎛ silica modified Al2O3 airborne-particle abrasion, (D) diamond bur, (Da) diamond bur + 110 ㎛ Al2O3 airborne-particle abrasion, and (Dr) diamond bur + 110 ㎛ silica modified Al2O3 airborne-particle abrasion. Cylinders of self-adhesive resin cement were cemented onto each treated ceramic surface and subjected to micro-shear bond strength test. Additional specimens were prepared for roughness and wettability analyses. The data were subjected to t-test and One-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α=.05). RESULTS. At stage 1, group R presented higher bond strength values than group A (P=.000). There was a statistically significant increase of bond strength at stage 2 for group A (P=.003). The diamond bur influenced the surface roughness, increasing the values (P=.023). Group R provided better wettability. Regardless of the applied surface treatment, most of failures were adhesive. CONCLUSION. The combination of application and reapplication of Rocatec Plus showed the best results of bond strength. Surface retreatment and recementation might be an indicated clinical strategy.

  • In the manufacturing process of joining of aluminum alloy and polymer, the strength of the metal-polymer joining is greatly influenced by the nanostructure of the oxide film. In this study, we investigated the dependence of joining strength on the thickness, structure, pore formation and surface roughness of the formed film. After the two-step anodization process, the surface oxide layer became thinner and rougher resulting in higher joining strength with the polymer. More specifically, after the two-step anodization, the surface roughness, Ra increased from 2.3 to 3.2 ㎛ with pore of three-dimensional (3D) nanostructure, and the thickness of the oxide film was thinned from 350 to 250 nm. Accordingly, the joining strength of the aluminum alloy with polymer increased from 23 to 30 MPa.

  • Recently, bridge deck overlay with latex modified concrete is widely applied in domestic. the capacity of bridge deck overlay depends on bond state on the surface. factors that have an effect on bond state are clean condition on the surface, absence of surface microcracking, absence of laitance, overlay curing. In this study, it is researched that characteristic of bond strength according to moisture condition on the surface and the removal method of concrete. As a result, it shows high bond strength in dry condition when w/c is $31\%$ and in moisture condition when w/c is $38\%$ respectively. characteristic of bond strength according to the removal method of concrete shows high bond strength when using water-jets rather than jackhammers.

  • In this study, to investigate the effects of 2-step shot peening at the surface of spring steel, tests are conducted on spring steel and shot peened specimens. Various tests are accomplished to evaluate mechanical properties influenced by shot peening process, and fatigue tests are also performed to evaluate the improvement of fatigue strength. And then the residual stresses are examined. The mechanical properties of material did not change so much by shot peening. However, the fatigue strength of notched specimen remarkably increased. In the case of 1-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 20% than unpeened specimen. Especially, in the case of 2-step shot peening, fatigue strength increased by about 40%, because the residual compressive stress at surface was higher than that of 1-step shot peened specimen. The fatigue strength and life are closely related to the value and position of maximum compressive residual stress by shot peening.

  • Statement of problem: Titanium has many advantages of high biocompatibility, physical properties, low-weight, low price and radiolucency, but it is incompatible with conventional dental porcelain due to titanium's oxidative nature. Many previous studies have shown that they used the method of sandblast for surface treatment prior to porcelain application, the researches are processing about the method of acid etching or surface coating. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to study the effect on bond strength of surface roughness between titanium and porcelain with the same surface topography. Material and method: In this study, we evaluated the bond strength by using 3-point bending test based on ISO 9693 after classified 8 groups - group P : polished with #1200 grit SiC paper, group S10 : $1.0{\mu}m$ surface roughness with sandblasting, group S15 : $1.5{\mu}m$ surface roughness with sandblasting, group S20 : $2.0{\mu}m$ surface roughness with sandblasting, group S25 : $2.5{\mu}m$ surface roughness with sandblasting, group S30 : $3.0{\mu}m$ surface roughness with sandblasting, group S35 : $3.5{\mu}m$ surface roughness with sandblasting, group E : $1.0{\mu}m$ surface roughness with HCl etching. Results: Within the confines of our research, the following results can be deduced. 1. In the results of 3-point bending test, the bond strength of sandblasting group showed significant differences from one of polishing group, acid etching group(P<.05). 2. The bond strength of sandblasting groups did not show significant differences. 3. After surface treatments, the group treated with sandblasting showed irregular aspect formed many undercuts, in the SEM photographs. The bond strength of sandblasting group was higher than 25 MPa, the requirement of ISO 9693. Conclusion: In above results, bond strength of titanium and low-fusing porcelain is influenced more to surface aspect than surface roughness. And titanium has clinically acceptable bond strength below surface roughness of $3.5{\mu}m$.
