A kinematics model of a ship wake in the presence of surface waves generated by wind is presented. It was found that a stationary wave structure behind a ship covered a wedge region with the angle at the top of the wake and that only divergent waves were present in a ship wake instead of both the longitudinal and cross-waves, which are known as the Kelvin model. Ship motion at some angle to wind waves can cause an essential asymmetry of the wake, compressing its windward half.
Flew control devices, such as flow liners, are frequently introduced in a cavitation tunnel in order to reduce the tunnel blockage effect, when a three-dimensional wake distribution is simulated using a complete ship model or a dummy model. In order to estimate the tunnel wall effect and to evaluate the effect of flow liners on the simulated wake distribution, a surface panel method is adopted for the calculation of the flow around a ship model and flow liners installed in a rectangular test section off cavitation tunnel. Calculation results on the Sydney Express ship model show that the tunnel wall effect on the hull surface pressure distribution is negligible for less than 5% blockage and can be appreciable for more than 20% blockage. The flow liners accelerate the flow near the afterbody of the ship model, so that the pressure gradient there becomes more favorable and accordingly the boundary layer thickness would be reduced. Since the resulting wake distribution is assumed to resemble the full scale wake, flow liners can also be used to simulate an estimated full scale wake without modifying the ship model. Boundary taper calculation should be incorporated in order to correlate the calculated wake distribution with the measured one.
A design procedure for a ship with minimum total resistance has been developed using a numerical optimization method called SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) to search for optimized hull form and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique. The friction resistance is estimated using the ITTC 1957 model-ship correlation line formula and the wave making resistance is evaluated using a potential-flow panel method based on Rankine sources with nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. The geometry of hull surface is represented and modified using B-spline surface patches during the optimization process. Using the Series 60 hull ($C_B$ =0.60) as a base hull, the optimization procedure is applied to obtain an optimal hull that produces the minimum total resistance for the given constraints. To verify the validity of the result, the original model and the optimized model obtained by the optimization process have been built and tested in a towing tank. It is shown that the optimal hull obtained around $13\%$ reduction in the total resistance and around $40\%$ reduction in the residual resistance at a speed tested compared with that of the original one, demonstrating that the present optimization tool can be effectively used for efficient hull form designs.
Accurate simulation of free-surface wave flows around a ship is very important for better hull-form design. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, termed SNUFOAM, which is based on the open source libraries, OpenFOAM, was developed to predict the wave patterns around a ship. Additional anti-diffusion source term for minimizing a numerical diffusion, which was caused by convection differencing scheme, was considered in the volume-fraction transport equation. The influence of the anti-diffusion source term was tested by applying it to free-surface wave flow around the Wigley model ship. In results, the band width of the volume fraction contours between 0.1 to 0.9 at the hull surface was narrowed by considering the anti-diffusion term.
In the present numerical simulation of viscous free surface flow around a ship, two-fluids in-compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with the standard $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$turbulence model are discretized on a regular grid by using a finite volume method. A local level-set method is introduced for capturing the free surface movement and the influence of the viscous layer and dynamic boundary condition of the free surface are implicitly considered. Partial differential equations in the level-set method are discretized with second order ENO scheme and explicit Euler scheme in the space and time integration, respectively. The computational results for the Series-60 model with $C_B=0.6$ show a good agreement with the experimental data, but more validation studies for commercial complicated hull forms are necessary.
A Coanda foil is a high-lift generating device exploiting the phenomena that flow separation is delayed if a high-speed jet is applied tangential to the surface as well known to the aerodynamic fields. In the present study, a Coanda foil with a flap is investigated to seek the possibility of marine application. Model experiments are carried out both in a towing tank and cavitation tunnel and surface pressure distributions, forces and moments acting on the foil are measured at the various angle of attacks and flap angles. The results are also compared to the numerical ones to show good agreements. The results of the present study demonstrate the practical applicability of the Coanda foil in the design of ship control surfaces.
The ship wave phenomena in the restricted waterway were investigated by a numerical analysis. The Euler and continuity equations were employed for the present study. The boundary fitted and moving grid system was adopted to enhance the computational efficiency. The convective terms in the governing equations and the kinematic free surface boundary condition were solved by the Constrained Interpolated Profile (CIP) algorithm in order to solve accurately wave heights in far field as well as near field. The advantage of the CIP method was verified by the comparison of the computed results by the CIP and the Maker and Cell (MAC) method. The free surface flow simulation around Wigley hull was performed and compared with the experiment for the sake of the validation of the numerical method. The present numerical scheme was applied to the free surface simulation for various canal sections in order to understand the effect of the sectional shape of waterways on the ship waves. The wave heights on the side wall and the shape of the wave patterns with their characteristics of flow are discussed.
Most existing theories on ship waves and wave resistance are based on the perturbation of the flow field by a small pararr.eter which specifies the slenderness of the ship hull. Since however, ship hulls in practice are neither so slender nor thin enough to secure the validity of the linearized theory, the agreen:ent between the theoretical prediction and the experimental result is not generally satisfactory. The author pointed out that the contribution by the non-linear term in the free surface condition can be represented by sorr.e source distribution over the still water plane. This paper leads to a forrr.ula for the wave resistance of not slender ships at low Froude nurr.bers. and deals with the asynptotic expression. As a nurr.erical example, the wave resistance of Wigley model is calculated, and the result is compared with experimental values. It is concluded that the wave resistance coefficient varies in the rate of Fn6 at low speed limit in general. A comparison with the result derived from the linearized free surface condition shows that the non-linearity of the free surface is irr portant at low speed.
This paper is a part of developing a computer code that can be used to generate IR images of a naval ship by considering the emitted and reflected infrared signals. The spectral radiance received by an IR sensor is consisted of the self-emitted component from the ship surface, the reflected component of the solar/sky irradiance at the ship surface, the emitted radiance from the ship surface and the exhaust plume gas, and the scattered radiance by the atmosphere. The plume gas radiance occupies a large part of the emitted radiance from a naval ship in operation. Therefore plume gas radiance must be taken into account when calculating the radiance from a naval ship for reliable IR images. In this paper, IR images of a naval ship with the exhaust gas effect in various environmental conditions are generated by using an exhaust gas prediction model called the JPL model. The contrast radiance (CR) values of the IR images are calculated to analyze the effect of the exhaust gas radiance quantitatively. The results obtained by quantitative analysis show that the IR signatures with the exhaust plume gas are 2.26 times larger than those neglecting the plume gas effect. The effect of the exhaust plume gas is shown to be more eminent in winter than in summer in the daytime.
