  • Marine diesel engines operate in environments in which damage easily occurs from corrosion. Recently, damage to cylinder liners has increased from corrosion wear caused by increased engine power. This damage can cause serious problems in the economy. Thus, many researchers have treated and studied damaged cylinder liners. However, a method is necessary for real-time monitoring of damage to cylinder liners during operation of the engine, before serious damage can occur. This study carries out reciprocating friction and wear tests on a cast iron specimen under various corrosion atmospheres and verifies the variations of friction coefficient and friction surface. Additionally, the friction coefficient and friction status are predicted by using a neural network that learns the vibration and frequency spectrum data from an acceleration sensor. According to our conclusions, amplitude is distributed highly at high frequencies, and values of standard deviation and kurtosis are high when damage to the friction surface is serious. The accuracy rate of the friction coefficient predicted by the neural network is over 80% of the real measured value without NaCl, and application of the neural network is very effective for diagnosing the friction condition and damage to the cylinder liner.

  • Electrochemical characteristics and damage behavior of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy used as a battery housing material for electric vehicles were investigated in solution simulating the acid rain environment with chloride concentrations. Potentiodynamic polarization test was performed to analyze electrochemical characteristics. Damage behavior was analyzed through Tafel analysis, measurement of damage area, weight loss, and surface observation. Results described that corrosion current density was increased rapidly when chloride concentration excceded 600 PPM, and it was increased about 7.7 times in the case of 1000 PPM compared with 0 PPM. Potentiodynamic polarization experiment revealed that corrosion damage area and mass loss of specimen increased with chloride concentrations. When chloride concentration was further increased, the corrosion damage area extended to the entire surface. To determine damage tendency of pitting corrosion according to chloride concentration, the ratio of damage depth to width was calculated. It was found that the damage tendency decreased with chloride concentrations. Thus, 6061-T6 aluminum alloy damage becomes larger in the width direction than in the depth direction when a small amount of chloride is contained in an acid rain environment.

  • Many steam turbine components encounter solid particle erosion damage. It has been reported that particle erosion damage is caused by oxide scale exfoliation from boiler tubes. One of the most effective solutions to combat the erosion damage is the application of erosion resistant coatings on the turbine components. In this study, particle erosion resistance for various hard coatings such as nitride, Cr carbide and boride coatings was evaluated under the simulated erosion conditions of steam turbines. Based on the particle erosion tests, the boride coating was found to be more superior to others.

  • In the surface grinding operations, the grinding fluid cannot be supplied sufficiently in the cutting zone. Temperature generated in the cutting zone increases rapidly and causes thermal damage such as burning on the surface of a workpiece. To reduce thermal damage, the intermittent grinding wheels, which have an excellent cooling effect, have been applied. This paper describes machining characteristics by using intermittent grinding wheels. The grinding force of the intermittent wheels has been simulated by the SIMULAB, which is a program for simulating dynamic systems. Using the intermittent grinding wheels, the characteristics of grinding force, temperature, surface roughness, and geometric error have been evaluated experimently.

  • This investigation evaluated the effect of cavitation condition on electrochemical characteristics of 304 stainless steel, which is widely used for marine environment. The cavitation test with time were conducted on 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Surface morphologies of specimen were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and 3D microscope. Pitting depth, weight loss and damage rate were analyzed after each cavitation experiment. The surface damage was more severe as the current density increased. A dramatical increase in the damage depth and weight loss was observed after 7 hours of cavitation experiment.

  • The quality of the surface layer in concrete structures plays an important role in the durability of the concrete. The concrete factory products are made as they improve the appearance of the surface and compressive strength in need. A common criterion to judge the quality of concrete products frequently seen in our daily life appears to be "beauty" in terms of consistent shaping. However, as for most concrete curb in such areas where a large amount of anti-freezing agents(NaCl) and ice and snow melting agents(CaCl2) are spread over roads to ensure road safety during the winter season, since deterioration advances from the surface, scaling is seen on the surface concrete due to deterioration which combined freezing damage and salt damage. Especially, In cold northern districts, the spreading amount of deicing salts increases by regulation of studded tire use, and the scaling of the concrete products, the various parts of concrete structures for roads is increasing in recent years. In this study, L-shape concrete curb were targeted, the permeable form method with the commercial permeable sheet was applied to it and the improvements of the quality were examined. By the permeable form method, surface layers got strengthened, which prevented permeation of the deterioration factor from the outside, and the scaling resistance of the upper surface where the permeable sheet was applied improved exceedingly. It will be expected by applying the permeable form method to various concrete products that frost resistance improves and scaling damage decreases.

  • Recent advances in NLO Borate Crystals for UV Generation are reviewed with the particular emphasis on the technique to improve the life time of UV optics. The laser-damage resistance of CLBO and fused silica surfaces was successfully improved after removing polishing compound by ion beam etching. The polishing compound embedded in the CLBO and fused silica surfaces were to a depth of less than 100nm. We were able to remove polishing compound without degrading the surface condition when the applied ion beam voltage was less than 200 V. The laser-induced surface damage threshold of CLBO was improved up to 15J/$\textrm{cm}^2$(wavelength: 355 nm, pulse width: 0.85 ns)as compared with that of the as-polished surface (11 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$). The laser-induced surface damage of fused silica also increased from 7.5J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 15J/$\textrm{cm}^2$. For the irradiation of a 266 nm high-intensity and high-repetition laser light, the surface lifetime of CLBO and fused silica could be more doubled compared with that of the as-polished surface.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the electrochemical behavior and damage degree of metal surface under different conditions by performing a potentiodynamic polarization experiment using an electropolishing solution for UNS S31603 based on initial delay time and surface roughness (parameters). A second anodic peak occurred at initial delay time of 0s and 100s. However, it was not discovered at 1000s and 3600s. This research referred to an increase in current density due to hydrogen oxidation reaction among various hypotheses for the second anodic peak. After the experiment, both critical current density and corrosion current density decreased when the initial delay time (immersion time) was longer. As a result of surface analysis, characteristics of the potentiodynamic polarization behavior were similar with roughness, although the degree of damage was clearly different. With an increase in surface roughness value, the degree of surface damage was precisely observed. As such, electrochemical properties were different according to the immersion time in the electropolishing solution. To select electropolishing conditions such as applied current density, voltage, and immersion time, 1000s for initial delay time on the potentiodynamic polarization behavior was the most appropriate in this experiment.

  • As concrete forms, panel forms made of plywood used to be widely used, but recently a system form made of aluminum has been broadly adopted because of the advantages it offers in terms of constructability and economy. However, an aluminum form reacts with concrete, which is alkali, and creates hydrogen gas. As a result, air pockets occur on the concrete's surface, and its finishability deteriorates. Therefore, this research analyzed the relationship between the distribution of voids and surface roughness and the damage degree and number of uses of the aluminum form. The analysis of the distribution of voids shows that the number of voids of 0.1~1 mm, which are considered to have occurred because of chemical reaction, was 200~500 on the coating plywood, but was 1 500~2 000 on the aluminum form after 3 uses, and impossible to count after a higher number of uses. Surface roughness was $1.7{\sim}3.2{\mu}m$ on the coating plywood form, but was about $2.6{\mu}m$ after the first use and about $6.8{\mu}m$ after 10 uses, a 2.6-fold increase. Distribution of voids did not show a particular tendency depending upon the degree of damage to the concrete form, but surface roughness showed an increasing tendency as the degree of damage grows. Therefore, when using aluminum forms, surface maintenance should be carried out completely, such as prevention of damages to the form surface coating materials and spreading of separating materials on forms.
