The penetrated chloride in concrete has different behavior with mix proportions and local exposure conditions, even in the same environments, so that it is very important to quantify surface chloride contents for durability design. As well known, the surface chloride content which is a key parameter like external loading in structural safety design increases with exposure period. In this study, concrete samples containing OPC (Ordinary Portland Cement), GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag), and FA (Fly Ash) had been exposed to submerged, tidal, and splash area for 5 years, then the surface chloride contents changing with exposure period were evaluated. The surface chloride contents were obtained from the chloride profile based on the Fick's 2nd Law, and the regression analysis for them was performed with exponential and square root function. After exposure period of 5 years in submerged and tidal area conditions, the surface chloride content of OPC concrete increased to 6.4 kg/m3 - 7.3 kg/m3, and the surface chloride content of GGBFS concrete was evaluated as 7.3 kg/m3 - 11.5 kg/m3. In the higher replacement ratio of GGBFS, the higher surface chloride contents were evaluated. The surface chloride content in FA concrete showed a range of 6.7 kg/m3 to 9.9 kg/m3, which was the intermediate level of OPC and GGBFS concrete. In the case of splash area, the surface chloride contents in all specimens were from 0.59 kg/m3 to 0.75 kg/m3, which was the lowest of all exposure conditions. Experimental constants available for durability design of chloride ingress were derived through regression analysis over exposure period. In the concrete with GGBFS replacement ratio of 50%, the increase rate of surface chloride contents decreased rapidly as the water to binder ratio increased.

The ingress of chloride ions plays a crucial role for service life design of reinforced concrete structures. In view of durability design of concrete structures under marine environment, one of the most essential parameters is the surface chloride content of concrete. However, on the basis of the results of in-situ investigation, this value has been determining in the numerous studies on the durability design of concrete structures. Hence, it is necessary to confirm the range of the surface chloride content in order to establish a unified durability design system of concrete. This study suggests a rational and practical way to calculate the maximum surface chloride content of submerged concrete under marine environment. This approach starts with the calculation of the amount of chloride ingredients in normal sea water. The capillary pore structure is modeled by numerical simulation model HYMOSTRUC and it is assumed to be completely saturated by the salt ingredients of sea water. In order to validate this approach, the total chloride content of the mortar and concrete slim disc specimen was measured after the immersion into the artificial sea water solution. Additionally, the theoretical, the experimental and in-situ investigation results of other researchers are compiled and analyzed. Based on this approach, it will follow to calculate the maximum surface chloride content of concrete at tidal zone, where the environment can be considered as a condition of dry-wetting cycles.

Recently durability design based on deterministic or probabilistic method has been attempted since service life evaluation in RC(Reinforced Concrete) structure exposed to chloride attack is important. The deterministic durability design contains a reasonable method with time effect on surface chloride content and diffusion coefficient, however the probabilistic design procedure has no consideration of time effect on both. In the paper, a technique on PDF(Probability of Durability Failure) evaluation is proposed considering time effect on diffusion and surface chloride content through equivalent surface chloride content which has same induced chloride content within a given period and cover depth. With varying period to built-up from 10 to 30 years and maximum surface chloride content from $5.0kg/m^3$ to $10.0kg/m^3$, the changing PDF and the related service life are derived. The proposed method can be reasonably applied to actual durability design with preventing conservative design parameters and considering the same analysis conditions of the deterministic method.

Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures in marine environment is one of the most important mechanism of deterioration. For estimate of service-life for chloride attack, it is necessary to get exact surface chloride content. This paper reports the results of estimate for surface chloride content in domestic west and south coast.

It is very important for structure designer to understand the service life variation since a wide range of service life is evaluated with changing exposure conditions and design parameters. Recently, for zero-carbon, waste plastic has been used for fuel for clinker production and this yields increase in chloride content in cement. This study is for evaluation of changing service life in the concrete with increasing initial chloride content due to usage of plastic-SRF(Solid Refuse Fuel) considering various exposure conditions and design parameters. For this, 4 levels of initial chloride content were assumed, and the service life was assessed using LIFE 365 program considering various environmental conditions including 3 levels of surface chloride content. As for analysis parameters, critical/initial chloride content, blast furnace slag powder replacement ratio, W/B(Water to Binder) ratio, cover depth, and unit mass for binder are adopted. Service life decreases with increasing initial chloride content and a significant reduction of service life is not evaluated permitting up to 1,000ppm of initial chloride content. With increasing slag replacement ratio, a longer service life can be secured since blast furnace slag powder has the effect of reducing the diffusion of external chloride ions and fixing the free chloride. It is thought that increasing initial chloride content up to European standard is helpful for enhancing sustainability and reducing carbon emission. Though the reduction in service life due to an increase in the initial chloride content is not significant in slag-concrete with low surface chloride content, careful consideration for mixing design should be paid for the exposure environment with high surface chloride content.

Deicing agent affect concrete durability such as scaling, rebar corrosion strength of concrete. In this study, developed deicing agent satisfied with EL610 is evaluated to compare affects to concrete with no deicing agent and chloride-containing deicing agents. Deicing agents are applied to concrete surface during four months twice a week. Chloride content, chloride penetration depth and concrete strength are evaluated. After experiment, chloride content, chloride penetration depth of concrete are as follows. Chloride-containing deicing > Eco friendly deicer > No deicing agents. Concrete strength are also as follows. Chloride-containing deicing > Eco friendly deicer > No deicing agents. From experiment, developed deicing agent shows low chloride content in concrete and affect concrete strength little lower than chloride-containing deicing.

In this study, chloride content of marine concrete bridge at the south coast in 5~34years was calculated based on the measured data and the validity of the proposed value was evaluated. Also, correlation of existence of salt injury prevention coating, chloride content, carbonation depth and the compressive strength of marine concrete bridges were derived and relationship of the four was evaluated. According to the research results, surface chloride content value in the tidal zone proposed form KCI 2009 and value in the splash zone and atmospheric zone proposed form Cheong et al.(2005) was the most valid. Also, salt injury prevention coating of marine concrete bridges had the outstanding effect of preventing chloride content penetration, carbonation depth and reduction in the compressive strength. Compressive strength of concrete was reduced by the increase of carbonation depth and chloride content.
As it is important to measure the degree of the deterioration and predict service life caused by chloride in concrete structure the methods of measuring chloride in the concrete is raised important problems. This study is to set a new standard for using of the colorimetric method through grasping the character of the colorimetric distinction method, and measuring the chloride content at the place discolored. Also, to predict chloride content around embeded bar and time reaching limit chloride concentration through measuring the chloride content of concrete surface by colorimetric distinction method and this study presents the new concept of concrete degradation and diagnosis of the durability by salt damage. According the results, it is possible to use colorimetric distinction method as simplified measurement to measure the fixed quantity of the chloride concentration. What is more, it would make calculation of concrete surface chloride had a wide fluctuation at the general environment extended. Also, it would be make estimating durability of reinforced concrete structures applied to the basic data.
Steel corrosion in embedded steel causes a significant durability problems and this usually propagates to structural degradation. Large-scaled concrete structures, PSC (Pre-stressed Concrete) or RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures, are usually constructed with mass concrete and require quite a long construction period. When they are located near to sea shore, chloride ion penetrates into concrete through direct or indirect exposure to marine environment, and this leads durability problems. Even if the structures are sheltered from chloride ingress outside after construction, the chloride contents which have been penetrated into concrete during the long construction period are differently evaluated from the initially mixed chloride content. In the study, chloride profiles in cores extracted from anchorage concrete block in two large-scaled suspension bridge (K and P structure) are evaluated considering the exposure periods and conditions. Total 21 cores in tendon room and chamber room were obtained, and the acid-soluble chlorides and compressive strength were evaluated for the structures containing construction period around 3 years. The test results like diffusion coefficient and surface chloride content from the construction joint and cracked area were also discussed with the considerations for maintenance.

Over the past few decades, a considerable number of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. A lot of improvements have been achieved especially in modeling of ionic flows. However, the majority of these researches have not dealt with the chloride binding isotherm based on the mechanism, although chloride binding capacity can significantly impact on the total service life of concrete under marine environment. The purpose of this study is to develop the model of chloride binding isotherm based on the individual mechanism. It is well known that chlorides ions in concrete can be present; free chlorides dissolved in the pore solution, chemical bound chlorides reacted with the hydration compounds of cement, and physical bound attracted to the surface of C-S-H grains. First, sub-model for water soluble chloride content is suggested as a function of pore solution and degree of saturation. Second, chemical model is suggested separately to estimate the response of binding capacity due to C-S-H and Friedel's salt. Finally, physical bound chloride content is estimated to consider a surface area of C-S-H nano-grains and the distance limited by the Van der Waals force. The new model of chloride binding isotherm suggested in this study is based on their intrinsic binding mechanisms and hydration reaction of concrete. Accordingly, it is possible to characterize chloride binding isotherm at the arbitrary stage of hydration time and arbitrary location from the surface of concrete. Comparative study with experimental data of published literature is accomplished to validity this model.
