The feasibility of Y(z) curve method of scanning acoustic microscope using high frequency transducer was experimentally studied for assessment of the thermal degradation in Co-based superalloy. Thermal degradation was performed to simulate the microstructural changes in Co-based superalloy arising from long term exposure at high temperature. Longitudinal wave velocity measured by pulse echo method using 10MHz transducer and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocity measured by V(z) curve method using 200MHE transducer were measured to investigate the effect on thermal degradation. Ultrasonic velocity decreased as the aging time increased in both ultrasonic waves. Moreover, the low frequency longitudinal wave velocity decreased a little. Otherwise, the high frequency LSAW velocity drastically decreased up to a maximum of 4.7% at the aging time of 4,000hours. A good correlation was found between LSAW and Vickers hardness. Consequently, V(z) curve method of SAM using high frequency transducer could be a potential tool for assessing thermal degradation.

Transient acoustic pressure in the near field of an impacted plate carries information that can be utilized for recovering the impact force history. The inverse calculation approach using BEM-based NAH, which is conventionally used for time harmonic excitation, can be applied for reconstructing the transient waves using the principle of Fourier transform and spectral analysis. Then, using the recovered velocity in normal direction of the plate surface, the corresponding structural intensity can be obtained and the identification of input power can be performed. However, several manipulations should be given to overcome numerical artifacts, such as aliasing and erratic oscillation at discontinuity, and to suppress the effect of noise. Experiment using a simply supported plate is presented for demonstration purpose.

When an object or objects, rigid or flexible, presents in incident sound field, the sound wave is scattered. This, we call, is scattered sound field. It, of course, depends on the amplitude and the direction of the incident sound field as well as the geometry and the surface impedance of the scatterer(object). This paper addresses the way to measure scattered sound field by using arbitrary incident sound wave. This means that the method can decompose the scattered field from measured sound field with respect to any magnitudes and directions of incident plane-waves.

The phenomena called "combustion instabilities" in a solid-propellant rocket motor may be viewed as sustaining or amplifying pressure waves. Energy is supplied by combustion processes near the surface of the burning propellant. T-burner method is used to determine the response function of the propellant to the pressure wave. But initial tests were failed because of the Helmholtz resonation inside the T-burner. Acoustic analysis of the original T-burner is carried out and suppression techniques for the Helmholtz oscillation are introduced.ntroduced.

T-burner tests of an Al/HTPB propellant in conjunction with a Pulsed DB/AB Method were conducted to find an acoustic amplification factor. Aluminum-free and aluminum-heavy propellants were examined. Instant surface ignition was successfully made by the use of a supplementary propellant of fractionally higher reaction rate. With the presence of higher aluminum concentration in the propellants, the pressure perturbations were promptly damped down and the pressure fluctuations were no longer dispersive. Addition of aluminum particles into the propellant was advantageous for stabilizing pressure-coupled unstable waves.

In order for studying pressure-coupled dynamic responses of droplet vaporization, open-loop experiment of an isolated droplet vaporization exposed to pressure perturbations in stagnant gaseous environment is numerically conducted, Governing equations are solved for flow parameters at gas and liquid phases separately and thermodynamic parameters at the interfacial boundary are matched for problem closure. For high-pressure effects, vapor-liquid interfacial thermodynamics is rigorously treated. A series of parametric calculations in terms of mean pressure level and wave frequencies are carried out employing a n-pentane droplet in stagnant gaseous nitrogen. Results show that wave instability in view of pressure-coupled vaporization response seems more susceptible at higher pressures and higher wave frequencies. Mass evaporation rate responding to pressure waves is amplified with increase in pressure due to substantial reduction in latent heat of vaporization. Augmentation of perturbation frequency also enhances amplification due to the reduction of phase differences between pressure perturbation and surface temperature fluctuation.

The piezoelectric composites had many advantages in comparison with conventional piezoelectric ceramics and piezopolymers for ultrasonic transducers used in NDT and in medical ultrasionic imaging. The electromechanical coupling coefficient should be high and the acoustic impedance should be low in these applications. However, the cross-coupling with spurious oscillations caused by laterally running plate waves exhibited complex motions in the surface of piezoelectric composites with coarse lateral spatial scale. The thickness mode electromechanical coupling coefficient of 1-3type of piezoelectric compoistes were 0.36 to 0.64, and the acoustic impedance of them were 9.8 to 22.7 MRayl. The lateral resonance frequency of 1-3 type piezoelectric composites shifted to high frequency region with decreasing lateral spatial scale.

We report a finding of fast(exceeding 2,000 K/s) heating of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS), one of the most commonly-used microchannel materials, under cyclic loadings at high(~MHz) frequencies. A microheater was created based on the finding. The heating mechanism utilized vibration damping of sound waves, which were generated and precisely manipulated using a conventional surface acoustic wave(SAW) microfluidic system, in PDMS. The penetration depths were measured to range from $210{\mu}m$ to $1290{\mu}m$, enough to cover most microchannel heights in microfluidic systems. The energy conversion efficiency was SAW frequency-dependent and measured to be the highest at around 30 MHz. Independent actuation of each interdigital transducer(IDT) enabled independent manipulation of SAWs, permitting spatiotemporal control of temperature on the microchip. All the advantages of this microheater facilitated a two-step continuous flow polymerase chain reaction(CFPCR) to achieve the billion-fold amplification of a 134 bp DNA amplicon in less than 3 min. In addition, a technique was developed for establishing dynamic free-form temperature gradients(TGs) in PDMS as well as in gases in contact with the PDMS.

Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices have become more important as mobile telecommunication systems need h호-frrequency, low-loss, and down-sized components. Higher-frequency SAW divices can be more sasily realized by developing new h호-SAW-velocity materials. The ZnO/diamond/Si multilasyer structure is one of the most promising material components for GHz-band SAW filters because of its SAW velocity above 10,000 m/sec. Silicon carbide is also a potential candidate material for high frequency, high power and radiation resistive electronic devices due to its superior mechanical, thermal and electronic properties. However, high price of commercialized 6- or 4H-SiC single crystalline wafer is an obstacle to apply SiC to high frequency SAW devices. In this study, single crystalline 3C-SiC thin films were grown on Si (100) by MOCVD using bis-trimethylsilymethane (BTMSM, C7H20Si7) organosilicon precursor. The 3C-SiC film properties were investigated using SEM, TEM, and high resolution XRD. The FWHM of 3C-SiC (200) peak was obtained 0.37 degree. To investigate the SAW propagation characteristics of the 3C-SiC films, SAW filters were fabricated using interdigital transducer electrodes on the top of ZnO/3C-SiC/Si(100), which were used to excite surface acoustic waves. SAW velocities were calculated from the frequency-response measurements of SAW filters. A generalized SAW mode. The hard 3C-SiC thin films stiffened Si substrate so that the velocities of fundamental and the 1st mode increased up to 5,100 m/s and 9,140 m/s, respectively.
This paper is concerned with the design of optimal surface heating patterns that result in focusing acoustic energy inside a subsurface target volume at a specified target time. The surface of the solid is heated by an incident laser beam which gives rise to shear and compressional waves propagating into the solid. The optimal heating design process aims to achieve the desired energy focusing at the target with minimal laser power densities and minimal system disturbance away from the target. The optimality conditions are secured via the conjugated gradient method and by the finite element method along with using the half-space Green's function matrix. Good quality energy focusing is achived with the optimal designs reflecting the high directivity of the photothermally generated shear wave patterns.
