  • Permanent magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) is suitable for use in cleanroom environments and have advantages such as high speed, high thrust, and high precision. If the stators are arranged in the entire moving path of the mover, there is a problem in that the installation cost increases. To solve this problem, discontinuous armature arrangement PMLSM has been proposed. In this case, the mover receives a greater detent force in the section where the stator is not arranged. When a large detent force occurs, it appears as a ripple component of the thrust during PMLSM operation. If the shape of the stator is changed to reduce the detent force, the characteristics of the back EMF are changed. Therefore, in this paper, the detent force and the harmonic components of back EMF were reduced through multi-purpose shape optimization. To this end, the FEA model was constructed and main effect analysis was performed on the major shape variables affecting each objective function. Then, the optimal shape that minimizes the objective function was derived through the response surface analysis method.

  • The numerical simulation of liquid sloshing in the three-dimensional tanks under horizontal excitation and roll excitation was carried out, and the inhibition effect of different baffles on the sloshing phenomenon was investigated. The numerical calculations were carried out by the nonlinear Boundary Element Method (BEM) with Green's theorem based on the potential flow, which was conducted with the governing equation corresponding to the boundaries of each region. The validity of the method was verified by comparing with experimental values and published literatures. The horizontal baffle, the vertical baffle and the T-shaped baffle in the sloshing tanks were investigated respectively, and the baffles' position, dimension and the liquid depth were provided and discussed in detail. It is drawn that the baffle shape plays a non-negligible role in the tank sloshing. The vertical baffle is a more effective way to reduce the sloshing amplitude when the tank is under a horizontal harmonic excitation while the horizontal baffle is a more effective way when the tank is under a roll excitation. The amplitude of free surface elevation at right tank wall decreases with the increasing of the horizontal baffle length and the vertical baffle height. Although the T-shaped baffle has the best suppression effect on tank sloshing under horizontal excitation, it has limited suppression effect under roll excitation and will complicate the sloshing phenomenon when changing baffle height.

  • The contact angle on powder hydrophobic polymer PMMA(polymethylmethacrylate), PVC(poly vinyl chloride) and hydrophilic metal aluminium was measured by wicking method on the base of Washburn equation for water, glycerol, formamide, diiodomethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane, 1-bromonaphthalene, acetone, chloroform, benzene, ethanol, methanol, and for anionic surfactant SDS(sodium dodecyl sulfate) and cationic surfactant CATB(cetyl trimethylamonium bromide) aqueous solution with concentrations. The values of ${\gamma}_c$ estimated by Zisman plot and adhesion tension plot for contact angle with organic liquids, SDS, and CTAB aqueous solutions were 43.5, 28.3, and $36.2mNm^{-1}$ for PMMA and 44.2, 25.0, and $34.8mNm^{-1}$ for PVC, respectively. From the results, it was considered that wettability and characteristics of solid surface were transformed by adding surfactant. The surface free energy, ${\gamma}_s$ and its components of PMMA, PVC, and aluminium were determined using harmonic equation.

  • Shear wave velocity (or shear modulus) of rock filled zone of CFRD is very important factor in the evaluation of performance of CFRD under the load such as earthquake. A shear wave velocity profile can be determined by surface wave method but this profile has been uncertainty caused by spatial variation of material property in rock filled zone. This uncertainty in shear wave velocity profile could be evaluated by the reliability based analysis which uses a coefficient of variation of material property to consider uncertainty caused by spatial variation of material property. In this paper, the possible 600 shear wave velocity profiles in rock filled zone of CFRD were generated using the method based on harmonic wavelet transform and 8 shear wave velocity profiles by HWAW method in the field, and the coefficients of variation of shear wave velocity with depth were evaluated for the rock filled zone of CFRD in Korea.

  • A Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation is proposed for probabilistic full waveform inversion (FWI) in a layered half-space. Dynamic responses on the half-space surface are estimated using the thin-layer method when a harmonic vertical force is applied. Subsequently, a posterior probability distribution function and the corresponding objective function are formulated to minimize the difference between estimations and observed data as well as that of model parameters from prior information. Based on the gradient of the objective function, a proposal distribution and an acceptance probability for MCMC samples are proposed. The proposed MCMC simulation is applied to several layered half-space examples. It is demonstrated that the proposed MCMC simulation for probabilistic FWI can estimate probabilistic material properties such as the shear-wave velocities of a layered half-space.

  • Laminated composite shells are commonly used in various engineering applications including aerospace and marine structures. In this paper, using semi-analytical finite strip method, the buckling behavior of laminated composite deep as well as thick shells of revolution under follower forces which remain normal to the shell is investigated. The stiffness caused by pressure is calculated for the follower forces subjected to external fibers in thick shells. The shell is divided into several closed strips with alignment of their nodal lines in the circumferential direction. The governing equations are derived based on first-order shear deformation theory which accounts for through thickness-shear flexibility. Displacements and rotations in the middle surface of shell are approximated by combining polynomial functions in the meridional direction as well as truncated Fourier series with an appropriate number of harmonic terms in the circumferential direction. The load stiffness matrix which accounts for variation of loads direction will be derived for each strip of the shell. Assembling of these matrices results in global load stiffness matrix which may be un-symmetric. Upon forming linear elastic stiffness matrix called constitutive stiffness matrix, geometric stiffness matrix and load stiffness matrix, the required elements for the second step analysis which is an eigenvalue problem are provided. In this study, different parameter effects are investigated including shell geometry, material properties, and different boundary conditions. Afterwards, the outcomes are compared with other researches. By considering the results of this article, it can be concluded that the deformation-dependent pressure assumption can entail to decrease the calculated buckling load in shells. This characteristic is studied for different examples.

  • Metal surface decontamination characteristics were investigated by using a laser ablation method. A second harmonic generation of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with a wave length of 532 nm, a pulse energy of 150 mJ and a pulse width of 5 ns was employed to assess the decontamination performance for metal surfaces contaminated with $CsNO_3$, $Co(NH_4)_2(SO_4)_2$, $Eu_2O_3$ and $CeO_2$. The ablation behavior was investigated for the decontamination variables such as a number of laser shots, laser fluence and an irradiation angle. Their optimum values were found to be 8, 13.3 J/$cm^2$ and $30^{\circ}$, respectively. The decontamination efficiency was different depending on the kinds of the contaminated ions, due to their different melting and boiling points and was in the order: $CsNO_3>Co(NH_4)_2(SO_4)_2>Eu_2O_3>CeO_2$. We also evaluated a correlation between the metal ablation thickness and the number of laser shots for the different laser fluences.

  • The basic mechanistic aspects of the interaction and practical considerations related to polymer ablation were briefly reviewed. Photochemical and photothermal effects, which highly depend on laser wavelength have close correlation with each other. In this study, multi-scanning laser ablation processing of polymer with a DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State) 3rd harmonic Nd:YVO$_4$ laser (355 nm) was developed to fabricate a three-dimensional micro shape. Polymer fabrication using DPSSL has some advantages compared with the conventional polymer ablation process using KrF and ArF laser with 248 nm and 193 nm wavelength. These advantages include pumping efficiency and low maintenance cost. And this method also makes it possible to fabricate 2D patterns or 3D shapes rapidly and cheaply because CAD/CAM software and precision stages are used without complex projection mask techniques. Photomachinability of polymer is highly influenced by laser wavelength and by the polymer's own chemical structure. So the optical characteristics of polymers for a 355 nm laser source is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The photophysical and photochemical parameters such as laser fluence, focusing position, and ambient gas were considered to reduce the plume effect which re-deposits debris on the surface of substrate. These phenomena affect the surface roughness and even induce delamination around the ablation site. Thus, the process parameters were tuned to optimize for gaining precision surface shape and quality. This maskless direct photomachining technology using DPSSL could be expected to manufacture tile prototype of micro devices and molds for the laser-LIGA process.

  • Satellite magnetic observations reflect the magnetic properties of deep crust about the depth of Curie isotherm that is a boundary where the magnetic nature of the rocks is disappeared, showing long wavelength anomalies that are not easily detected in near-surface data from airborne and shipborne surveys. For this reason, they are important not only in the analyses on such as plate reconstruction of tectonic boundaries and deep crustal structures, but in the studies of geothermal distribution in Antarctic and Greenland crust, related to global warming issue. It is a conventional method to compute the spherical harmonic coefficients from global coverage of satellite magnetic observations but it should be noted that inclusion of erroneous data from the equator and the poles where magnetic observations are highly disturbed might mislead the global model of the coefficients. Otherwise, the reduced anomaly model can be obtained with less corruption by choosing the area of interest with proper data processing to the area. In this study, I produced a satellite crustal magnetic anomaly map over East Asia (20° ~ 55°N, 108° ~ 150°E) centered on Korean Peninsula, from CHAMP satellite magnetic measurements about mean altitude of 280 km during the last year of the mission, and compared with the one from global crustal magnetic model (MF7). Also, a comparison was made with long wavelength anomalies from EMAG2 model compiled from all near-surface data over the globe.

  • In the various fields of Civil Engineering, shear modulus is very important input parameters to design many constructions and to analyze ground behaviors. In general, a shear wave velocity profile is decided by various experiments before constructing a structure and, analysis and design are carried out by using decided shear wave velocity profile of the site. However, if civil structures are started to construct, the shear wave velocity will be increased more than before constructions because of confining pressure increase by the load of structure. The evaluation of the change in shear wave velocity profile is used very importantly when maintaining, managing, reinforcing and regenerating existing structures. In this study, a non-destructively geotechnical investigation method by using the HWAW method is applied to an evaluation of change in properties of the site according to construction. Generally, the space for experiments is narrow when underground of existing or on-going structures is evaluate, so a prompt non-destructive experiment is required. This prompt non-destructive experiment would be performed by various in-situ seismic methods. However, most of in-situ seismic methods need more space for experiments, so it is difficult to be applied. The HWAW method using the Harmonic wavelet transforms, which is based on time-frequency analysis, determines shear wave velocity profile. It consists of a source as well as short receiver spacing that is 1~3m, and is able to determine a shear wave velocity profile from surface to deep depth by one test on a space. As the HWAW method uses only the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to determine a profile, it provides reliability shear modulus profile such as under construction or noisy situation by minimizing effects of noise from diverse vibration on a construction site or urban area. To estimate the applicability of the proposed method, field tests were performed in the change of geotechnical properties according to constructing a minimized modeling bent. Through this study, the change of geotechnical properties of the site was effectively evaluated according to construction of a structure.
