  • Al alloys are useful materials having high specific strength and are used in machining of parts having thin-walled structures for weight reduction in aircraft, automobiles, and portable devices. In machining of thin-walled structures, it is difficult to maintain dimensional accuracy because machining deformation occurs because of cutting forces and heat in the cutting zone. Thus, cutting conditions and methods need to be investigated and cutting signals need to be analyzed to diagnose and minimize machining deformation and thereby enhance machining quality. In this study, an investigation on cutting conditions to minimize machining deformation and an analysis on characteristics of cutting signals when machining deformation occurs are conducted. Cutting signals for the process are acquired by using an accelerometer and acoustic emission (AE) sensor. Signal characteristics according to the cutting conditions and the relation between machining deformation and cutting signals are analyzed.

  • Although a lot of experimental and analytical investigations have been carried out for steel bridge piers made of SS400 and SM490, the formulas available for SS400 and SM490 are not suitable for evaluating ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of high strength steel (HSS) SM570. The effect of various parameters is investigated in this paper, including plate width-to-thickness ratio, column slenderness ratio and axial compression force ratio, on the ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge box piers made of SM570 steel subjected to cyclic loading. The elasto-plastic behavior of the steel bridge piers under cyclic loads is simulated through plastic large deformation finite element analysis, in which a modified two-surface model (M2SM) including cyclic hardening is employed to trace the material nonlinearity. An extensive parametric study is conducted to study the influences of structural parameters on the ultimate load and deformation capacities. Based on these analytical investigations, new formulas for predicting ultimate load and deformation capacities of steel bridge piers made of SM570 are proposed. This study extends the ultimate load and deformation capacities evaluation of steel bridge piers from SS400, SM490 steels to SM570 steel, and provides some useful suggestions.

  • Small BAseline Subset (SBAS) technique using multi master interferograms can be effective to detect surface deformation in forest area. In this paper, The analysis reveals area of 2-dimension surface deformation at Seguam Island in Aleutian Arc., Alaska. We acquired ERS-1/2 data from track 201 and 473 datasets on Seguam Island from 1992 to 2008. This study analyze surface deformation applying Differential Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) and SBAS time series method using two adjacent tracks. As a results, it was calculated that subsidence -1~2 cm in LOS direction and - 2~3 cm in vertical direction. The horizontal direction was repeated contraction and expansion. The observation of 2-dimension displacements explained the volcanic activity on Seguam island. Also, it is believed to be used for basic data to estimate movements of magma source.

  • A two dimensional elasto-plastic finite element program taking into account contact between crack surfaces if developed in order to analyze subsurface cracking in rolling contact. But the friction between upper and lower surface of the crack is not considered. Under the assumptions of small deformation and small displacement, the incremental theory of plasticity is used to describe plastic deformation. J-integral is computed as the applied Hertzian load slides over the surface with friction. J-integral is correlated with wear rate of the rail. The propagation rate of the right tip of the surface crack is fast by 45% than that of the left side.

  • Nonlinear property and contact matter are analyzed about the pipe applied with internal pressure through this study. The weakest part and its safety can be examined. Maximum equivalent stress is shown at the contact surface between bolt and nut. The value of contact stress with the pressure of 12MPa is increased 1.4 times as large as that with no pressure. The maximum contact pressure is shown at the clamp corner of the external surface on pipe. The value of contact pressure with the pressure of 12MPa is increased 1.4 times as large as that with no pressure. The radial deformation with no pressure is also increased greatly at the middle part of internal surface on pipe. But this maximum deformation on pipe with the pressure of 12MPa is shown at the part far away the support of pipe. This value is increased 5.7 times as large as that value with no pressure. As contact status, the sticking occurs most at the external surface of pipe. It also tends to occur at the contact surface between bolt and nut. At the external surface of pipe, the sticking in case of the pressure of 12MPa occurs more than that in case of no pressure.

  • Immersion tests of Alloy 600 were conducted in simulated primary water environments of a pressurized water reactor at 325 ℃ for 10, 100, and 1000 h to obtain insight into effects of surface deformation on internal and intergranular (IG) oxidation behavior through precise characterization using various microscopic equipment. Oxidized samples after immersion tests were covered with polyhedral and filamentous oxides. It was found that oxides were abundant in mechanically ground (MG) samples the most. The number density of surface oxides increased with time irrespective of the method of surface finish. IG oxidation occurred in mechanically polished (MP) and chemically polished (CP) samples with thin internal oxidation layers. However, IG oxidation was suppressed with relatively thick internal oxidation layers in MG samples compared to MP and CP samples, suggesting that MG treatment could increase resistance to primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) from the standpoint of IG oxidation. As a result, appropriate surface treatment for Alloy 600 could prevent oxygen diffusion into grain boundaries, inhibit IG oxidation, and finally induce its high PWSCC resistance.

  • In this study, the control of the free surface deformation of a magnetic fluid for the change in electromagnetic force is discussed. The free surface of magnetic fluid is formed by the balance of surface force, gravity, pressure difference, magnetic normal pressure and magnetic body force. Magnetic fluid in characteristics of fluid adjusted to the opposite direction of the gravity direction. Thus, the device of a magnetic fluid proposed the complete zero-leakage sealing, oscillator for surface control, boundary layer control, MHD, flow control, flow using magnetic levitation system and surface actuator. This study show the deformation of surface rise due to the intensity of the magnetic field and possibility of two-dimensional control of magnetic fluid through the feedback data of hall sensor.

  • The automated gate operating system is developed in this paper that controls the information of container at gate in the ACT. This system can be divided into three parts and consists of container identifier recognition car plate recognition container deformation perception. We linked each system and organized efficient gate operating system. To recognize container identifier the preprocess using LSPRD(Line Scan Proper Region Detection)is performed and the identifier is recognized by using neural network MBP When car plate is recognized only car image is extracted by using color information of car and hough transform. In the port of container deformation perception firstly background is removed by using moving window. Secondly edge is detected from the image removed characters on the surface of container deformation perception firstly background is removed by using moving window. Secondly edge is detected from the image removed characters on the surface of container. Thirdly edge is fitted into line segment so that container deformation is perceived. As a results of the experiment with this algorithm superior rate of identifier recognition is shown and the car plate recognition system and container deformation perception that are applied in real-time are developed.

  • In this study, the deformation characteristics of grain-size controlled rheology materials surfaces were investigated as a part of the research on the surface crack prediction in semi-solid formed automobile components. The microstructure of rheology Al-Si alloys consists of primary and eutectic regions. In eutectic regions the crack initiation begins with initial fracture of the eutectic silicon particles and inside other intermetallic phases. Nano-deformation characteristics in the eutectic and primary region of semi-solid aluminum alloys (356 alloy and 319 alloy) were investigated through the nanoindentation/scratch experiments and the AFM observation.

  • The existence of grooves on the surface of bond coat has significant effect on the instability of thermal barrier system. In this work, the thermal-mechanical fatigue experiments were performed under various thermal and mechanical loads for FeCralloy specimens with and without yttrium dopant to observe the deformation of surface grooves. The effect of temperature, fatigue load and the ratio of curvature on the deformation of grooves were investigated. As the results, it has been found that the higher load level and the higher curvature ratio induces the larger deformation near the grooves. However, the addition of yittrium dopant induces the adverse results.
