  • This study was performed to compare the effect of hyaluronic acid(HA), vitamin I and their combinations for the prevention of postoperative intraperitioneal adhesion in dogs. Twelve mongrel dogs were divided into four groups; HA- (HA Group), vitamin E 800IU- (E8 Group), HA + vitamin E 800IU- (HA+E8 Group) and HA + vitamin E 1600IU-treated group(HA+E16 Group) with three dogs in each group. After celiotomy, five abrasions of 1$\times$1 cm area were made on the antimesenteric serosal surface of the anterior ileocecum with a No. 10 scalpel blade. The five abrasions and peritoneal cavity were coated with 25 of 0.l% HA. Oral supplements of vitamin E were given from the fifth day before the operation to the fourteenth day after the operation. Hematologic values were evaluated before the operation and on the 1st, 4th, 7th and 14th day after the operation. The locations and scores of adhesion were assessed through the second operation on the 21st day after the first operation. The adhesions were located on serosa to mesentary(43.3%)), serosa to serosa(20%), serosa to omentum(5%) and serosa to parietal peritoneum(1.7%). The incidences of adhesion in HA, E8, HA+E8 and HA+E16 groups were 80%, 100%, 47% and 53%, respectively. The scores of adhesion in HA+E8 group(p < 0.05) were lower than those in other groups. This study showed that the combination of HA and vitamin E 800IU was significantly effective in reducing the intraperitoneal adhesion in dogs.

  • Simple poor-cosolvent casting was used to surface treat biodegradable elastic poly(L-lactide-co-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PLCL; 50:50) copolymer films that presented lotus-leaf-like structures. We evaluated whether the lotus-leaflike-structured PLCL (L-PLCL) films could be used as a biomaterial for artificial vascular grafts. The surface morphology, hydrophobicity, and antithrombotic efficiency of the films were examined while immersed in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a contact angle meter. The recovery and crystallinity of the films were measured using a tensile-strength testing machine and an X-ray diffractometer, respectively. The solvent containing acetic acid, as a poor co-solvent, and methylene chloride mixed in a 1:2 ratio produced an optimal PLCL film with a water contact angle of approximately $124^{\circ}$. Furthermore, the surface of the L-PLCL films immersed in PRP showed a lower rate of platelet adhesion (<10%) than that of the surface of an untreated PLCL film immersed in PRP.

  • In this paper, the research of IC embedded PCB process is carried out. For embedding chips into PCB, solder-balls on chips were etched out and ABF(Ajinomoto Build-ip Film), prepreg and Cu foil was laminated on that to fabricate 6 layer build-up board. The chip of which solder ball was removed was successfully interconnected with PCB by laser drilling and Cu plating. However, de-lamination phenomenon occurred between chip surface and ABF during reflow and thermal shock. To solve this problem, de-smear and plasma treatment was applied to PI(polyimide) passivation layer on chip surface to improve the surface roughness. The properties of chip surface(PI) was investigated in terms of AFM(Atomic Force Micrometer), SEM and XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). As results, nano-size anchor was evenly formed on PI surface when plasma treatment was combined with de-smear(NaOH+KMnO4) process and it improved thermal shock reliability ($260^{\circ}C$-10sec solder floating).

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this in vitro study is to examine the effects of a nano-structured alumina coating on the adhesion between resin cements and zirconia ceramics using a four-point bending test. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 100 pairs of zirconium bar specimens were prepared with dimensions of $25mm{\times}2mm{\times}5mm$ and cementation surfaces of $5mm{\times}2mm$. The samples were divided into 5 groups of 20 pairs each. The groups are as follows: Group I (C) - Control with no surface modification, Group II (APA) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ high-purity aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) particles, Group III (ROC) - airborne-particle-abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ silica modified aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3+SiO_2$) particles, Group IV (TCS) - tribochemical silica coated with $Al_2O_3$ particles, and Group V (AlC) - nano alumina coating. The surface modifications were assessed on two samples selected from each group by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The samples were cemented with two different self-adhesive resin cements. The bending bond strength was evaluated by mechanical testing. RESULTS. According to the ANOVA results, surface treatments, different cement types, and their interactions were statistically significant (P<.05). The highest flexural bond strengths were obtained in nano-structured alumina coated zirconia surfaces (50.4 MPa) and the lowest values were obtained in the control group (12.00 MPa), both of which were cemented using a self-adhesive resin cement. CONCLUSION. The surface modifications tested in the current study affected the surface roughness and flexural bond strength of zirconia. The nano alumina coating method significantly increased the flexural bond strength of zirconia ceramics.

  • In order to give hydrophobic surface properties on carbon steel, the fluorinated amorphous carbon films were prepared by using linear 2.45GHz microwave PECVD device. Two different process approaches have been tested. One is direct deposition of a-C:H:F films using admixture of $Ar/CH_4/CF_4$ working gases and the other is surface treatment using $CF_4$ plasma after deposition of a-C:H film with $Ar/CH_4$ binary gas system. $Ar/CF_4$ plasma treated surface with high $CF_4$ gas ratio shows best hydrophobicity and durability of hydrophobicity. Nanometer scale surface roughness seems one of the most important factors for hydrophobicity within our experimental conditions. The properties of a-C:H:F films and $CF_4$ plasma treated a-C:H films were investigated in terms of surface roughness, hardness, microstructure, chemical bonding, atomic bonding structure between carbon and fluorine, adhesion and water contact angle by using atomic force microscopy (AFM), nano-indentation, Raman analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

  • Conventional poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement has been widely used as an useful biopolymeric material to fix bone using artificial prostheses. However, many patients had to be reoperated, due to the poor mechanical and thermal properties of conventional PMMA bone cement, which are derived from the presence of unreacted MMA liquid, the shrinkage and bubble formation that occur during the curing process of the bone cement, and the high curing temperature ($above 100^{\circ}C$) which has to be used. In the present study, a composite PMMA bone cement was prepared by impregnating conventional PMMA bone cement with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) powder, in order to improve its mechanical and thermal properties. The UHMWPE powder has poor adhesion with other biopolymeric materials due to the inertness of the powder surface. Therefore, the surface of the UHMWPE powder was modified with two kinds of silane coupling agent containing amino groups (3-amino propyltriethoxysilane ($TSL 8331^{R}$) and N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(amino propyltrimethoxysilane) ($TSL 8340^{R}$)), in order to improve its bonding strength with the conventional PMMA bone cement. The tensile strengths of the composite PMMA bone cements containing $3 wt\%$ of the UHMWPE powder surface-modified with various ratios of $TSL 8331^{R}$ and $TSL 8340^{R}$ were similar or a little higher than that of the conventional PMMA bone cement. However, no significant difference in the tensile strengths between the conventional PMMA bone cement and the composite PMMA bone cements could be found. However, the curing temperatures of the composite PMMA bone cements were significantly decreased.

  • We have studied a property change of organic light-emitting diodes (OLED)s due to a surface reformation of indium-tin-oxide(ITO) substrate. An ITO is widely used as a transparent electrode in light-emitting diodes, and the OLEDs device performance is sensitive to the surface properties of the ITO. The ITO surface reformation could reduce the Schottky barrier at the ITO/organic interface and increase the adhesion of the organic layer onto the electrode. We have studied the characteristics of OLEDs with a treatment by a wet processing of the ITO substrate. The self-assembled monolayer(SAM) was used for wet processing. The characteristics of OLEDs were improved by SAM treatment of an ITO in this work. The OLEDs with a structure of ITO/TPD(50nm)/$Alq_3$(70nm)/LiF(0.5nm)/Al(100nm) were fabricated, and the surface properties of ITO were investigated by using seneral characterization techniques. Self-assembled monolayer introduced at the anode/organic interface gave an improvement in turn-on voltage, luminance and external quantum efficiency compared to the device without the SAM layer. SAM-treatment time of the ITO substrate was made to be 0/10/15/20/25min. The current efficiency of the device with 15min. treated SAM layer was increased by 3 times and the external quantum efficiency by 2.6 times.

  • PURPOSE. This study was performed to characterize the effects of zirconia coated with calcium phosphate and hydroxyapatite compared to smooth zirconia after bone marrow-derived osteoblast culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Bone marrow-derived osteoblasts were cultured on (1) smooth zirconia, (2) zirconia coated with calcium phosphate (CaP), and (3) zirconia coated with hydroxyapatite (HA). The tetrazolium-based colorimetric assay (MTT test) was used for cell proliferation evaluation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was measured to evaluate the cellular morphology and differentiation rate. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed for the analysis of surface chemistry. The genetic expression of the osteoblasts and dissolution behavior of the coatings were observed. Assessment of the significance level of the differences between the groups was done with analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS. From the MTT assay, no significant difference between smooth and surface coated zirconia was found (P>.05). From the SEM image, cells on all three groups of discs were sporadically triangular or spread out in shape with formation of filopodia. From the ALP activity assay, the optical density of osteoblasts on smooth zirconia discs was higher than that on surface treated zirconia discs (P>.05). Most of the genes related to cell adhesion showed similar expression level between smooth and surface treated zirconia. The dissolution rate was higher with CaP than HA coating. CONCLUSION. The attachment and growth behavior of bone-marrow-derived osteoblasts cultured on smooth surface coated zirconia showed comparable results. However, the HA coating showed more time-dependent stability compared to the CaP coating.

  • Breast cancer is one of the most common life-threatening malignancies and the top cause of cancer deaths in women. Although many conventional therapies exist for its treatment, breast cancer still has many handicaps to overcome. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a well-known cause of tumor recurrences due to the ability of CSCs for self-renewal and differentiation into cell subpopulations, similar to stem cells. To fully treat breast cancer, a strategy for the treatment of both cancer cells and CSCs is required. However, current strategies for the eradication of CSCs are non-specific and have low efficacy. Therefore, surface biomarkers to selectively treat CSCs need to be developed. Here, 34 out of 641 surface biomarkers on CSCs were identified by proteomic analysis between the human breast adenocarcinoma cell line MCF-7 and MCF-7-derived CSCs. Among them, carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules 6 (CEACAM6 or CD66c), a member of the CEA family, was selected as a novel biomarker on the CSC surface. This biomarker was then experimentally validated and evaluated for use as a CSC-specific marker. Its biological effects were assessed by treating breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) with short hairpin (sh)-RNA under oxidative cellular conditions. This study is the first to evaluate the biological function of CD66c as a novel biomarker on the surface of CSCs. This marker is available as a moiety for use in the development of targeted therapeutic agents against CSCs.

  • This paper deals with a coating technique for hardening surface layer of softwood(Larix leptolepis) flooring board to improve its surface properties such as hardness and abrasion resistance, Two coating methods were applied for surface hardening of the wood in this study. First, several functional monomers were added in UV-curing epoxy acrylate varnish. Secondly, unsaturated polyester varnish was used as under coat and acryl varnish including anti-abrasive agent was used as top coat. The hardness of the treated wood was similar to that of high density hardwood such as keruing by the first coating method. The abrasion resistance of the coated wood was greatly improved by the second method. Adhesion properties and impact resistance of the coated wood surface were also good. It was suggested that the well-coated softwood could be used as interior flooring board for heavy walking as substitute for hardwood.
