Two-phase loop systems using the latent heat capacity of their working fluids can meet the increasing power requirements and are well suited to thermal management systems of future large applications, due to its abilities to handle large heat loads and to provide them at uniform temperatures regardless of the changes in the heat loads. Therefore some experiments on the effect of the gas and liquid superficial velocities, $j_G,\;j_L$ on flow pattern transition, void fraction and frictional pressure loss were performed on a co-current air-water flow in an adiabatic horizontal tube. The flow patterns were depended on the superficial velocity of each phase. It snowed that the increasing $j_L$, resulted in a significant increase in the frictional pressure loss for all flow patterns, at a constant $j_G$. The experimental results were also evaluated with some of existing models and correlations.
We evaluated the optimal conditions for fluidization of nickel oxide (NiO) and its reduction into high-purity Ni during hydrogen reduction in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor. A comparative study was performed through structural shape analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); variance in pressure drop, minimum fluidization velocity, terminal velocity, reduction rate, and mass loss were assessed at temperatures ranging from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$ and at 20, 40, and 60 min in reaction time. We estimated the sample weight with most active fluidization to be 200 g based on the bed diameter of the fluidized bed reactor and height of the stocked material. The optimal conditions for NiO hydrogen reduction were found to be height of sample H to the internal fluidized bed reactor diameter D was H/D=1, reaction temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, reaction time of 60 min, superficial gas velocity of 0.011 m/s, and pressure drop of 77 Pa during fluidization. We determined the best operating conditions for the NiO hydrogen reduction process based on these findings.
A study of counter-current two-phase flow in narrow rectangular channels has been performed. Two-phase flow regimes were experimentally studied in 760 mm long and 100 mm wide test sections with 2.0 and 3.0mm gaps. The resulting data have been compared to previous transition models. For the transition from bubbly to slug flow the superficial velocity of gas increased as the gap width increased. The comparison of experimental data to the transition model developed by Taitel and Barnea showed relatively good agreement for the bubbly-to-slug transition in the case of 2mm gap width. For the criteria of Mishima and Ishii to be applicable to the slug-to-churn transition the distribution parameter should be well defined for narrow channels. Even though the gap width of narrow channels increased the superficial gas velocity did not change for the transition form chum to annular flow regime. For the chum-to-annular transition the model of Taitel and Barnea showed discrepancies with experimental data, especially in the channel with larger gap.
The main objective of this study is to investigate experimentally the two-phase flow characteristics in terms of the direct contact condensation of a steam-water stratified flow in a horizontal rectangular channel. Experiments were performed for both air-water and steam-water flows with a cocurrent flow configuration. This work presents the local temperature and velocity distributions in a water layer as well as the interfacial characteristics of both condensing and noncondensing fluid flows. The gas superficial velocity varied from 1.2 m/s to 2.0 m/s for air and from 1.2 m/s to 2.8 m/s for steam under a fixed inlet water superficial velocity of 0.025 m/s. Some advanced measurement methods have been applied to measure the local characteristics of the water layer thickness, temperature, and velocity fields in a horizontal stratified flow. The instantaneous velocity and temperature fields inside the water layer were measured using laser-induced fluorescence and particle image velocimetry, respectively. In addition, the water layer thickness was measured through an ultrasonic method.

In the present experimental study, the effect of gas- and liquid-injected methods on the formation of bubble and liquid slug at the merging micro T-junction of a square microchannel with dimensions $600{\mu}m{\times}600{\mu}m$ was investigated. Nitrogen and water were used as test fluids. The superficial velocities of the liquid and gas were in the range of 0.05 - 1 m/s, and 0.1 - 1 m/s, respectively, where the Taylor flow was observed. The bubble length, liquid slug length, bubble velocity, and bubble generation frequency were measured by analyzing the images captured using a high-speed camera. Under similar inlet superficial velocity conditions, in the case of gas injection to the main channel at the merging T-junction (T_gas-liquid), the lengths of the bubble and liquid slug were longer, and the bubble generation frequency was lower than in the case of liquid injection to the main channel at the merging T-junction (T_liquid-gas). On the other hand, in both cases, the bubble velocity was almost the same. The previous correlation proposed using experimental data for T_liquid-gas had predicted the present experimental data of bubble length, bubble velocity, liquid slug length, and bubble generation frequency for T_gas-liquid to be ~24%, ~9%, ~39%, ~55%, respectively.
Up to now, only superficial studies on the combustion velocity of smokeless fuels have been reported, while it should be a basical factor on the utilization of low quality coals and some other smokeless solid fuels. It was, therefore, difficult to choose raw material coals in manufacturing gaseous fuels. With the intent to solve above problem, we have determined combustion velocity of domestic anthracites, graphites, coalites of lignite and cokes from Japanese bituminous coal. The results show that the cokes from Japanese bituminous coal which has been used as raw material in the manufacturing gaseous fuels such as water gas, or producer gas in Korea can be replaced by some sources of domestic anthracite or coalite of lignite.

The desulfurization characteristics of anthracite in a bench scale pressurized fluidized bed combustor are investigated. The coal used in the experiment is domestic anthracite from Kangwon Taeback area. The desulphurization experiment is performed with limestone from Chungbuk Danyang. The pressure of the combustor is maintained at 6 atm, and the combustion temperatures are 850, 900, and 950$\^{C}$. The superficial gas velocities are 0.9, 1.1, and 1.3 m/s. The excess air ratio is varied from 5 to 35%. The Ca/S mole ratios are 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 and 4.5 mole. All experiments are executed at 2m bed height. Consequently, SO$_2$ concentration in the flue gas is increased with incresing bed temperature and superficial gas velocity. However SO$_2$ concentration is decreased with incresing excess air ratio and Ca/S mole ratio.
Hydrodynamics and mixing characteristics such as circulation time, mixing time, circulation velocity and axial dispersion coefficient were investigated using highly viscous pseudoplastic solutions of carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) in an external circulation loop air-lift reactor with 13$\ell$ working volume. The superficial gas velocity was changed from 1.9 to 6.2cm/s and CMC concentration from 0 to 1.0wt%. The theoretical model based on the pressure balance is developed mathematically to predict liquid circulation velocity. Gas hold-up, circulation velocity and axial dispersion coefficient of liquid phase increased with increasing gas velocity and decreased slightly with increasing liquid viscosity. Mixing time and circulation time decreased with increasing gas velocity and increased with increasing liquid viscosity. Experimental data on liquid circulation velocity were in good agreement with the predicted values.
Low-frequency pressure fluctuations in an external-loop airlift reactor were investigated. Low-frequency pressure fluctuations could be measured by shooting videos about liquid levels in the four piezometric tubes which were installed at the lower and upper parts of the riser and downcomer using a cellular phone. The periodic characteristics of pressure fluctuations were proved by the calculation of their auto-correlation function and cross-correlation function. Even if the riser superficial gas velocity was constant, the riser and downcomer gas holdups as well as wall pressures were periodically changed due to the inertia of circulating liquid. In general, the intensity of pressure fluctuations increased with an increase in the gas velocity. When the unaerated liquid height was 0.04 m, the maximum period of pressure fluctuations was found at the specific gas velocity (0.14 ms-1). It was because the maximum inertia of circulating liquid resulted from a reduction in the increasing rate of the liquid circulation velocity and a decrease in the volume of the effectively circulating liquid with an increase in the gas velocity.

The conical fluidizing system of a binary mixture of Geldart C powders and Geldart A particles was defined as the conical powder-particle fluidized bed. We used a cold conical powder-particle fluidized bed model having a 0.104m-I.D. and 0.6m-high with an apex angle of $10^{\circ}$ for fluidization of a binary powder-particle mixture of 50 $vol\%$ fine carbon black powders (HI-900L, Korea Carbon Black Co.) and coarse alumina particles $(90{\mu}m)$ under different superficial gas velocities (0-0.1 m/s). The differential bed pressure drop increases with increasing gas velocity, and it goes from zero to a maximum value with increasing or decreasing gas velocity. In the conical fluidized beds of fine powders, demarcation velocities of the partial fluidization, full fluidization, partial defluidization was not observed.
