The catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which were benzene and toluene, was studied in the supercritical carbon dioxide($SC-CO_2$) media. In $SC-CO_2$ media, the deep oxidation conversion of VOCs was increased with the temperature and pressure. The deep oxidation conversion in SC -$CO_2$ media is better than that in air media at same pressure condition. This can be explained by the solubility of VOCs in $SC-CO_2$. The many intermediates produced by the partial oxidation of VOCs were detected from off-line samples. The intermediates were Identified as benzene, toluene, benzaldehyde, phenol, naphthalene, 1,1`-biphenyl, benzoic acid, 3-methylphenol, 1,1'-(1,2-ethanediyl)bis- benzene, 1,1'-(1,2-ethene- diyl)bis-benzene, anthracene, and so on. The amount of intermediates was decreased as the molar radio of oxygen to carbon dioxide was decreased. When the molar ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide was 1 : 16, the deep conversion was kept constant. Thus, the catalytic oxidation process in $SC-CO_2$ media can be combined on-line with supercritical fluid extraction of environmental matrices and supercritical regeneration of used adsorbent. Thus, the nontoxic $SC-CO_2$ media process was suggested as the new VOCs control technology.
In this study, poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) microparticles containing gemcitabine hydrochloride were prepared by a supercritical fluid process, called aerosol solvent extraction system (ASES), utilizing supercritical carbon dioxide as antisolvent. The influence of process parameters such as temperature, pressure, $CO_2$ and solution flow rate, solution concentration, and feed ratio of drug to polymer on the morphology and characteristics of the microparticles was studied in detail. The gemcitabine-loaded microparticles exhibited a spherical shape with a smooth surface. The entrapment efficiency of gemcitabine increased with increasing temperature, solution concentration and $CO_2$ flow rate and with decreasing drug/polymer feed ratio. The maximum drug loading obtained from the ASES process was found to be about 11%. The ASES-processed PLLA microparticles containing gemcitabine showed a relatively high initial burst due to the presence of surface pores on the microparticles and the poor affinity between drug and polymer.

This study was performed to investigate antioxidant activities of Mistletoe (MS) extracts by measuring electron donating ability (EDA), super oxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity and total polyphenol content (TPC). The extracts were obtained using supercritical carbon dioxide, hot-water and ethanol extraction. EDAs was the higher in ethanol extract (70.53%) than water (36.73%) or supercritical carbon dioxide extract (15.73% at 400 bar, $30^{\circ}C$) at concentration of 10 mg/mL. However, SOD-like activities and TPCs were the highest in the supercritical carbon dioxide extract. At concentration of 1 mg/mL, supercritical carbon dioxide extract (22.54% at 200 bar, $40^{\circ}C$) was higher SOD activity than water (7.85%) and ethanol extract (6.12%). Regarding TPCs of MS extracts, the content was the highest in supercritical carbon dioxide extract (17.57 wt% catechin equivalent at 200 bar, $50^{\circ}C$) followed by ethanol and water extract. These results suggest that it can be useful to develop functional foods using antioxidative active compounds of MS with high polyphenol contents.

Optimal conditions for the supercritical carbon dioxide $(scCO_{2})$ extraction of glycyrrhizin from licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) were investigated, with an emphasis on the types and levels of modifiers. The morphology of the licorice tissue remaining after the $scCO_{2} $ extraction of glycyrrhizin was examined by scanning electron microscopy, coupled with measurements of absolute density. Conventional organic solvent extraction was also carried out for purpose of quantitative comparison. At 50 MPa and $60^{circ}C$ glycyrrhizin could not be extracted with pure $scCO_{2}$, while a considerable amount of glycyrrhizin was extracted when water was added to $scCO_{2}$ as a modifier. The highest recovery was found to be about $97\%$ when $70\%$ aqueous methanol was added to $scCO_{2}$ at a concentration of $15\%$. The optimal pressure and temperature for the supercritical fluid extraction of glycyrrhizin were observed to be 30 M Pa and $60^{circ}C$, respectively. Under these conditions, the percentage recovery of glycyrrhizin attained a maximum value of 102.67\pm$$1.13\%$ within 60 min. Furthermore, in the case of $scCO_{2}$ modified with $70\%$ aqueous methanol, the licorice tissue obtained after extraction was found to be severely degraded by excessive swelling, and the absolute density of the licorice residues was observed to be the highest.

The aim of this study was to identifyisothiocyanates (ITCs) from wasabi (Wasabi japonica Matsum) using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) and to compare the composition in the extracts between $SCO_2$ and organic solvents extraction. A semi-continuous high pressure apparatus was used to extract wasabi (roots, stems and leaves) at following conditions pressure 80$\sim$120 bar, temperature $40\sim50^{\circ}C$. Ether, ethanol, chloroform and dichloromethane were used as organic solvents. The ITCs extracted by means of both separation technologies were analyzed by a gas chromatography system. As the results of study, AITC and ITCs were highly extracted at 40$^{\circ}C$ and 80 bar. To extract AITC from wasabi, $SCO_2$ extraction is more effective than organic solvents extraction, resulted in thermal degeneration and remaining of organic solvents.

The powder injection molding process having advantages in manufacturing three-dimensional precision parts essentially requires a debinding process before sintering to remove the binders used for preparing feedstock. In this study, powder injection molding of translucent alumina was performed, and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is used as a supercritical fluid that makes it possible to remove a large amount of binder, which is paraffin wax. The relationship between the optical property of translucent alumina and the debinding condition (temperature and pressure) of supercritical $CO_2$ was investigated. As temperature and pressure increased, extraction rate of the binder showed rising tendency and average grain size after sintering process was relatively fine. On the other hand, optical transmittance was reduced. As a result, the debinding condition at $50^{\circ}C$ and 20 MPa that represents the lowest extraction rate, $8.19{\times}10^{-3}m^2/sec$, corresponds to the largest grain size of $14.7{\mu}m$ and the highest optical transmittance of 45.2%.

Full fat sardine oil is readily extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide($SC-CO_2$) at pressure of 5,000~8,000 psig. and temperature of 50~$80^{\circ}C$. Under these conditions $SC-CO_2$ has the density of fluid and diffusivity of gas. Therefore, equilibrium solubility is readily achieved in a column batch extractor which permits high gas flow rates. The results showed that extraction was higher at the pressure of 6,000 psig. and $60^{\circ}C$. Fish oil extracted with $SC-CO_2$ is lighter in color, smells less and contains less iron and phosphorus than hexane-extracted crude oil from the same sardine oil. Eicosapentaenoic acid($C_{20-5}$) in sardine oil was fractionated at 90.5% by the $SC-CO_2$ extractor with heat exchange.
The bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex-272) and sodium diethyl- dithiocarbamate (NaDDC) ligands were used to extract of metal ions ($Cd^{2+},\;Co^{2+},\;Cu^{2+},\;Pb^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}$) in supercritical $CO_2$. Experiments showed a strong synergistic effect and better extraction efficiency if the two ligands were used together. In-situ UV-visible observation indicates that NaDDC in the water/supercritical $CO_2$ started to decompose slowly. The synergistic effect seems to come from the deprotonation of the organophosphorus ligand by amines from the decomposed NaDDC. The enhancing role of amines was confirmed using the mixture of Cyanex-272 and diethylamine(DEA) in the metal extraction.
In this study, two supercritical extraction systems of different scale, analytical-scale and lab-scale, were employed to investigate the extraction efficiency of canola oil from canola seeds using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCCO_2$) as an extraction solvent. The effects of various parameters such as extraction temperature ($40{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), pressure (200~500 bar), particle size, and $SCCO_2$ flow direction on the extraction rate and yield were examined in detail. Triglycerides and fatty acids in the extracted canola oil were analyzed quantitatively by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography. The solubility values of canola oil in $SCCO_2$ could be calculated from the experimental results. Similar extraction yields were obtained from both analytical-scale and lab-scale extraction systems. The extraction rates obtained under solvent ($SCCO_2$ ) upflow conditions were found to be higher than those of solvent downflow extraction. However, the effect of $SCCO_2$ flow direction on the extraction yield was observed to be relatively insignificant.

In this study, the extraction of Conger myriaster oil by using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) and organic solvent was investigated. The extraction conditions conducted for SC-CO2 varied for pressure (25, 30 MPa) and temperature (45, 55 ℃), while the SC-CO2 flow rate was kept constant during the experiment (27 g min-1) and hexane was used as a conventional organic solvent. The extraction yield indicated that the best extraction condition would be SC-CO2 at 55 ℃ and 30 MPa, resulting in the highest yield of 37.73 ± 0.14%. The oils were characterized for their fatty acid (FAs) composition using gas chromatography, while it was revealed that the major FAs were mystric acid, palmitoleic acid, oleic acid, electroosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The oxidation stability of the extracted C. myriaster oil was evaluated by measuring the acid value, peroxide value, and free fatty acid. The best oxidative stability was obtained from SC-CO2 extracted oil at 30 MPa and 55 ℃. There was a significant difference in the color properties of the SC-CO2 and hexane extracted oils, with the SC-CO2 extracted oil showing better chromaticity than the oil extracted using hexane. Extracting oils from C. myriaster with SC-CO2 could bring better economic benefits than using organic solvents. When supercritical carbon dioxide was used, there was no post-treatment process; thus, it was confirmed that this is a more environmentally friendly oil extraction method.
