This paper proposes a novel compound-type hybrid energy storage system (HESS) that inherits the unique advantages of both battery/supercapacitor (SC) and the SC/battery HESSs for electric vehicles (EVs). Eight operation modes are designed to match this system. A mode control strategy is developed for this HESS on the basis of these modes, and five classes of operation modes are established to simplify this strategy. The mode control strategy focuses on high operating efficiency and high power output. Furthermore, the compound-type HESS is designed such that the SC is the main priority in braking energy absorption. Thus, this HESS can operate efficiently and extend battery life. Simulation results also show that the compound-type HESS can not only supply adequate power to the motor inverter but can also determine suitable operation modes in corresponding conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that this HESS can extend battery life as well. The overall efficiency of the compound-type HESS is higher than those of the battery/SC and the SC/battery HESSs.

Activated carbon has lower electrical conductivity and reliability than other carbonaceous materials because of the oxygen functional groups that form during the activation process. This problem can be overcome by doping the material with heteroatoms to reduce the number of oxygen functional groups. In the present study, N, F co-doped activated carbon (AC-NF) was successfully prepared by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, utilizing commercial activated carbon (AC-R) as the precursor and ammonium tetrafluoroborate as the single source for the co-doping of N and F. AC-NF showed improved electrical conductivity ($3.8\;S\;cm^{-1}$) with N and F contents of 0.6 and 0.1 at%, respectively. The introduction of N and F improved the performance of the pertinent supercapacitor: AC-NF exhibited an improved rate capability at current densities of $0.5-50mA\;cm^{-2}$. The rate capability was higher compared to that of raw activated carbon because N and F codoping increased the electrical conductivity of AC-NF. The developed method for the co-doping of N and F using a single source is cost-effective and yields AC-NF with excellent electrochemical properties; thus, it has promising applications in the commercialization of energy storage devices.

Nickel sulfide (NiS) is one of the most promising candidates as an electrode material for supercapacitors due to its good capacitive properties, high electrical conductivity and low cost. In addition to the development of the new electrode materials, nanostructuring the electrode surface is one of the main issues in enhancing the capacitive performance of the supercapacitors because the increased surface area can improve the charge transfer and energy storage processes occurring at the electrode surface. However, most nanofabrication techniques require complicated and delicate nanoprocesses, and hence are not suitable for practical use. In this work, we developed a simple method to fabricate nanostructured NiS electrodes by depositing NiS onto $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. First, $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were spin-coated on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate, and then NiS layers were deposited onto the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles by consecutive dip-coatings in the solutions containing nickel and sulfur precursors. This nanostructured NiS electrode showed significantly improved capacitive properties compared to the electrode of NiS films deposited without $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The asymmetric full-cell supercapacitor with this nanostructured NiS electrode and activated carbon electrode was also fabricated and investigated.
This paper proposes a new cascoded configuration for hybrid energy storage system (HESS) which consists of batteries and supercapacitor (SC) for Electric Vehicle applications. In this configuration,a resonant LLC converter is interfacedin series with a battery module and it converts a part of the energy from the batteries and transfer it to the dc-link bus. The LLC converter is controlled by a phase-shift angle between the primary and secondary switches to maintain a constant dc-link voltage and obtain soft-switching conditions for all the primary switches. By placing the SC moduleina cascoded concept, the rated voltage of SC can be reduced significantly compared with the conventional topologies. It helps save the cost and reduce the number of SC cells. The proposed configuration can operate with four different modes: feeding load, acceleration, regenerative braking andSC charging. A scaled-down prototype converter (2 kW, 600V output) is designed and tested to verify the advantages of the proposed topology. The maximum efficiency obtained with the proposed topology is 99%.

The development of nanostructured functional materials derived from biomass and/or waste is of growing importance for creating sustainable energy-storage systems. In this study, nanoporous carbonaceous materials containing numerous heteroatoms were fabricated from waste coffee grounds using a top-down process via simple heating with KOH. The nanoporous carbon nanosheets exhibited notable material properties such as high specific surface area (1960.1 m2 g−1), numerous redox-active heteroatoms (16.1 at% oxygen, 2.7 at% nitrogen, and 1.6 at% sulfur), and high aspect ratios (>100). These unique properties led to good electrochemical performance as supercapacitor electrodes. A specific capacitance of ~438.5 F g−1 was achieved at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1, and a capacitance of 176 F g−1 was maintained at a fast scan rate of 100 mV s−1. Furthermore, cyclic stability was achieved for over 2000 cycles.

The available power generated from the FC power plant may not be sufficient to meet sustained load demand, peak demand or transient events. An supercapacitor bank(SCB) can supply a large burst of power, but it cannot store a significant amount of energy. The combined use of FC and SCB has the potential for the better energy efficiency, reducing the cost of FC technology and improved dynamic response. In this paper, A single PEMFC and PEMFC operated in parallel with a SC bank are presented, A new dynamic model of PEMFC system, the converter and controller has been developed for stand-alone applications. The simulation results are presented using Matlab/Simulink, and SimPowerSystems environments. It is confirmed that the results show a good performance and stable DC-link voltage for proposed dynamic and mathematical models developed for the combined FC/SCB.
In this article, we described about the preparation and electrochemical properties of a flexible energy storage system based on a plastic polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate. The PET treated with UV/ozone was fabricated with multilayer films composed of 30 polyaniline (PANi)/graphene oxide (GO) bilayers using layer-by-layer assembly of positively charged PANi and negatively charged GO. The conversion of GO to the reduced graphene oxide (RGO) in the multilayer film was achieved using hydroiodic acid vapor at $100^{\circ}C$, whereby PANi structure remained nearly unchanged except a little reduction of doping state. Cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge curves of 30 PANi/RGO bilayers on PET substrate (shorten to PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET) exhibited an excellent volumetric capacitance, good cycling stability, and rapid charge/discharge rates despite no use of any metal current collectors. The specific capacitance from charge/discharge curve of the PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET electrode was found to be $529F/cm^3$ at a current density of $3A/cm^3$, which is one of the best values yet achieved among carbon-based materials including conducting polymers. Furthermore, the intrinsic electrical resistance of the PANi-$RGO_{30}$/PET electrodes varied within 20% range during 200 bending cycles at a fixed bend radius of 2.2 mm, indicating the increase in their flexibility by a factor of 225 compared with the ITO/PET electrode.

Hierarchically porous, chemically activated carbon materials are readily derived from biomass using hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and chemical activation processes. In this study, empty fruit bunches (EFB) were chosen as the carbon source due to their sustainability, high lignin-content, abundance, and low cost. The lignin content in the EFB was condensed and carbonized into a bulk non-porous solid via the HTC process, and then transformed into a hierarchical porous structure consisting of macro- and micropores by chemical activation. As confirmed by various characterization results, the optimum activation temperature for supercapacitor applications was determined to be $700^{\circ}C$. The enhanced capacitive performance is attributed to the textural property of the extremely high specific surface area of $2861.4m^2\;g^{-1}$. The prepared material exhibited hierarchical porosity and surface features with oxygen functionalities, such as carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, suitable for pseudocapacitance. Finally, the as-optimized nanoporous carbons exhibited remarkable capacitive performance, with a specific capacitance of $402.3F\;g^{-1}$ at $0.5A\;g^{-1}$, a good rate capability of 79.8% at current densities from $0.5A\;g^{-1}$ to $10A\;g^{-1}$, and excellent life cycle behavior of 10,000 cycles with 96.5% capacitance retention at $20A\;g^{-1}$.

A new type electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) was constructed by using carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and DAAQ(1,5-diaminoanthraquinone) electrode. Carbonaceous materials are found in variety forms such as graphite, diamond, carbon fibers etc. While all the carbon nanofibers include impurities such as amorphous carbon, nanoparticles, catalytic metals and incompletely grown carbons. We have eliminated of Ni particles and some carbonaceous particles in nitric acid. Nitric acid treated CNFs could be covered with very thin DAAQ oligomer from the results of CV and TG analyses and SEM images. A crystalline supramolecular oligomer of 1,5-diaminoanthraquinone(DAAQ) was successfully prepared as a thin film by electrochemical oxidation from an acidic non-aqueous medium. DAAQ oligomer film exhibited a specific capacity as 45-50 Ah/kg in 4M $H_2SO_4$. Its electrochemical characteristics were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. And compared with different electrolyte of aqueous type. During ultrasonic irradiation CNFs was to disperse in 0.1M $H_2SO_4$. As a result, CNFs coated by DAAQ composite electrode showed relatively good electrochemical behaviors.

Carbon is an attractive candidate for use in eletrochemical supercapacitors that depend on charge storage in the electrode/eletorlyte international double layer. Property of an electrical double layer capacitor depend both on the technique used to prepare the electrode and on the current collector structure. The study is to research that $V_2O_5$-carbon (SP270) composite electrode for supercapacitor. The discharge capacitance of $V_2O_5$-SP270 (20wt%) in 1st and 35cyc1e was 14F/g and 8.5F/g at current density of $0.1mA/cm^2$. The discharge process of $V_2O_5$-SP270 (20wt%) composite electrode is larger than that others.
