  • In Korea accelerated industry development and urbanization during the last three decades have led serious water pollution problems in many parts of the nation. Especially in the regions of west and south coast have low fresh water in the dry season of spring and summer. In the place isolated from land it is important to secure the fresh water for drinking and general service. This study is concerned on the thermal system design to develop low-pressure evaporation type fresh water gen-erator of capacity 1 ton/day using the heat source of non-operating boiler in the season of spring and summer. The results obtained from this study are as follows. the water quantitieds generated from experi-mental evaporator showed good coincidence with the calculated values. The maximum production quantity was 1.38ton/day at pressure 40mmHg abs. and temperature $80^{\circ}C$.

  • The summer polar lower thermosphere (90-100 km) has an interesting connection to meteors, adjacent to the mesopause region attaining the lowest temperature in summer. Meteors supply condensation nuclei for charged ice particles causing polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSE). We report the observation of meteor trail with nearly horizontal transit at high speed (20-50 km/s), and at last with re-enhanced echo power followed by diffusive echoes. Changes in phase difference between radar receivers aligned in meridional and zonal directions are used to determine variations in horizontal displacements and speeds with respect to time by taking advantage of radar interferometric analysis. The actual transit of echo target is observed along the straight pathway vertically and horizontally extended as much as a distance of at least 24 km and at most 29 km. The meteor trail initially has a signature similar to 'head echoes', with travel speeds from 20 - 50 km/s. It subsequently transforms into a different type of echo target including specular echo and then finally the power reenhanced. The reenhancement of echo power is followed by fume-like diffusive echoes, indicating sudden release of plasma as like explosive process probably involved. We discuss a possible role of meteor-triggered secondary plasma trail, such as fireball embedded with electrical discharge that continuously varies the power and transit speed.

  • The tendencies for teleconnection with a time lag and other characteristics of Korean summer droughts have been investigated and some clues to predict the drought occurrences several months before have been found. First, the May and June droughts in Korea are simultaneous with those over the northwestern part of Korea owing to the relation with the baroclinic wave. However, the July and August droughts occur over the mid-latitudes or southern part of Korea owing to the relation with the Changma front. Second, several months before the MJJA droughts in Korea, it is found that the effective drought index (EDI) over particular areas (hereafter, referred to as the omen areas) is large. Thailand, Carolina Island, Mongolia, and Central Bengal Bay were selected as the omen areas. Third, when the monthly minimum EDI (MME) of the omen area in winter is more than 0.7, it signifies that the precipitation is above normal, Korea has almost always experienced a summer drought. However, the droughts occurring with this type of relationship only represent half of the MJJA droughts in Korea. Fourth, the relationships between the Korean drought and the precipitation over omen areas in low latitudes are not valid over all the eight precipitation areas in Korea, but only over Areas I, II, and III, where heavy rains occur during spring and summer.

  • This research was designed to investigate the preference for underwear and textiles of college students according to season. One hundred and nine subjects majoring in fashion design were surveyed about the most favorite materials among underwear textiles according to each season. The extent of preference was compared by season. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The most important purpose of wearing underwear was the hygienic performance in summer and the insulation in winter. 2. The most favorite textile of underwear was cotton regardless of season and the most favorite type of underwear was fashionable underwear in summer and insulating underwear in winter. 3. The most preferred material underwear was white jacquard knitted with cotton 30's yarn for summer and white and gray melange plain knit made with cotton and polyester blended 38's syro-spunned yarn for winter. 4. From the results about the factors influencing on the preference for the textiles of underwear, color, touch and cool sensation were the positive factor in summer, while insulation and pattern were comparatively affirmative factor in winter. 5. From the results about the sensibility factors influencing on the preference for the textiles of underwear, 'comfort', 'refined', 'naive' were the positive factor in summer, while 'comfort', 'naive', 'refined' were comparatively affirmative factor in winter. From the above results, hygienic and fashionable underwear is required in summer and thin and insulating underwear in winter for young people. Additionally, in textiles, cotton and cotton blended, comparatively light and simple patterned material is recommended for underwear.

  • In this study, we analyzed the relationship between five factors: long-wave radiation, short-wave radiation, cloudiness, SVF and summer shelters. In the previous study, we recognized the correlation between single building SVF and long-wave radiation. Furthermore, this study attempted to confirm the relationship at the summer shelter with high solar radiation blocking rate. The observations are as follows. ① Cooling in summer shelters was not the effect of temperature but the effect of radiation reduction due to short-wave radiation shielding. ② In the case of the canopy tent with low heat capacity, the long-wave radiation was observed to be 16.7% higher per hour than the comparison control point due to the increase in surface temperature. ③ The long-wave radiation increase rate was different according to SVF, but showed very similar pattern according to the material characteristics of the summer shelters. ④ Passive Cooling effect on the type of summer shelters are determined by the size of the total long and short-wave radiation at that point.

  • This study was carried out to establish a production system of cut flowers and bulbs of oriental hybrid lilies in highland in summer. In study, effect of cultivation type and shading was examined. The cultivation types used in the bulb production experiments were greenhouses with no cover, greenhouses with net screen (net screen house), and greenhouses with EVA roof cover and net screen sides (rain shelter house). Net screen and rain shelter houses had either 0 or 30% shading. Cultivation type had significant effect and shading had a minor effect on bulb production. The greatest yield and quality of produced bulbs were obtained in the rain shelter house with 30% shading. From the results of this study, it is concluded that dispersed production of high quality cut lily flowers and bulbs could be achieved during the summer in highland.
