A Study of Adenovirus Pneumonia: Early Summer Outbreak in 1996 (1996년 초여름에 유행한 Adenovirus폐렴의 검토)

  • The incidence of Adenovirus(AV) pneumonia in children is estimated at 8%. Long-term complications reported with type 7 include hyperleucent lung syndrome, bronchiolitis obliterans and may require several months to recover. We reviewed 8 case of AV pnemonia confirmed by AV culture and sero-diagnosis among selected 19 AV pneumonia suspicious cases who were admitted to the Sanggye Paik Hospital of Inje University due to clinical pneumonia from May to July 1996. From 19 children, nasal aspirates or trachial aspirates were collected: viral agents were detected by virus isolation and virus antigen was detected by indirect immunofluorescent staining. Serologic diagnosis for type-specific AV antibody was done by neutralisation test. The results are as follows: 1) Age of the patients ranged from 6 months to 47 months with a mean of $24{\pm}9$ months. 6 were male and 2 were female(M:F= 3:1). 2) Monthly distribution showed 4 cases on June, 2 cases on May and July, respectively. 3) The mean duration of admission was 20.4 days and mean duration of fever was 11.3 days 4) Peripheral leukocyte counts were elevated in 4 cases(50%) and findings of shift to left were showed in 4 cases(50%) and serum aminotransferase activities were elevated in 6 case(75%). 5) Radiologic findings include linear and streaky infiltration(1/8 cases), patchy and lobar consolidation (7/8 cases), pleural effusion(2/8 cases) and hyperleucency was seen in 3/8 cases at time of admission and increased to 6/8 cases on hospital discharge. 6) The AV serotypes were type 7, type 3, and type 1. 7) Oxygen supply was done in 4 cases(50%) and all 8 patients include 2 cases of type 7 treated with artificial ventilator were survived. In conclusion, the serotypes of AV pneumonia outbreaks in early summer of 1996 were type 7, 3, 1 and, as showed severe clinical course, continued follow up surveillance is necessary to the long term pulmonary complications.

  • This study is using the RADIANCE lighting simulation tool to determine the transmittance where the horizontal blind is installed. The transmittance is applied to DayDim program which is a lighting calculation and analysis tool. Parameters such as clear sky type, seasonal changes(the summer solstice), altitude, azimuth and horizontal blind angle at a 0$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}$ were considered. The simulation results present that measured directional transmittances have different values according to each directional property of the horizontal blind.

  • Since the natural gas air-conditioning not only increases the base load of the gas company but also decreases the summer peak load of the electricity company, it is considerded as an efficient demand-side management program. This paper suggests the economic evaluation method of the gas air-conditioning program from the perspectives of the participants, the pipeline gas company, the local distribution company, the electricity company, and the total resources. The absorption type gas air-conditioning/space-heating is selected as a case study to illustrate the economic analysis of the natural gas air-conditioning.

  • According to the oriental medicine study on G.B.S, we obtained the result as follows : 1. G.B.S was inclined in flacid paralysis and pain and numbness(痺) in oriental medicine. 2. Etiology factors of G.B.S was classified exogenous and endogenous pathogenic factors. The formers was warmth and heat(濕熱), summer heat and dampness(暑濕), dampness and heat(濕熱), and cool and dampness(寒濕), the latter was the deficiency in both the spleen and the stomach(脾胃虛弱), deficiency of Yin(vital essence) in both the liver and kidney(肝腎陰虛) the factor of dampness and heat(濕熱) was most numerous. 3. Pathological mechanism of G.B.S was close connected with the five viscera - the spleen(脾), the stomach(胃), the liver(肝), the kidney(腎), the lung(肺) 4. Differentiation of Symptom-Complexes(辨症) in the G.B.S was consumption type of nutrient fluid due to heat symptom in the lung(肺熱傷津), fullness type of dampness and heat(濕熱侵淫), defiency type in both the spleen and the kidney(脾腎不足), deficiency type in both the spleen and the stomach(脾胃虛弱), deficiency type in the liver and the kidney(肝腎兩虛) 5. Acupuncture treatment for G.B.S was mainly Yangmoung channels of both the hand and the foot.(手足陽明經)

A Study on Indoor Thermal Environment in an Tower Type Apartment House at Tropical Nights (여름철 열대야 발생시 탑상형 아파트의 실내온열환경에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, As a basic research for improving indoor thermal environment at tower type apartment houses, specifications of heat storage and heat emission in the structures of apartment houses were investigated, and the ratio of indoor and outdoor air velocity at tower type apartment house was examined, too. Indoor temperature at night time was higher than outdoor air temperature because heat emission from the structure of wall, ceiling and floor those are constructed by use of reinforced concrete which has large heat capacity. The ratio of indoor and outdoor air velocity was lower than 0.1 and this was caused by the plan of tower type apartment house. PMV was in the range of 0.3~1.9, and was about 1.0 (it means slightly warm) at 10 : 00 p.m.. To improve indoor thermal environment in summer season at tower type apartment houses, it needs more investigation on specifications of heat storage and heat emission in the structure including winter season, and on the improvement of the ratio of indoor and outdoor air velocity.

Development of Rolling Type Light-Shelf with Adjustable Reflectivity (반사율 변경이 가능한 롤링타입형 광선반 개발)

  • Purpose: Recently, lighting energy consumption in buildings has been gradually increasing and more studies are being carried out in order to solve this problem. Especially, the efficiency of the light-shelf system, which is a natural lighting system, has been recognized as a potential solution in addressing this problem and so various studies regarding the light-shelf system are being conducted. However, if high luminance material is used for the light-shelf system, glaring may occur in certain circumstances even though such material increases efficiency, and there are also difficulties related to maintenance and management in the case of an external light-shelf system. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to suggest modifications in relation to the reflectivity of the light-shelf system and introduce a rolling type light-shelf system with built-in cleaning equipment. In addition, a performance evaluation technique was established to verify its effectiveness. Method: In this study, we reviewed previous studies related to the light-shelf system and its performance. Then a testbed was established to assess the performance of the rolling-type light-shelf system suggested in this study. Also, the performance of the rolling-type light-shelf system suggested in this study was compared and analyzed with that of existent light-shelf systems in order to better verify the performance, and the uniformity ratio of illumination and lighting energy consumption were calculated for this purpose. Result: The results of the performance evaluation are as follows. 1) The performance evaluation result of the light-shelf system on the day of the summer solstice shows that $30^{\circ}$ is appropriate for the angle of light-shelf system, and the depth of the incoming natural light also increases as the angle of the light shelf increases. 2) It is possible to improve the uniformity ratio of illumination by increasing the reflectivity of the light shelf, and the reason for this is the increase in the amount of incoming light entering indoors due to the increased reflectivity of the light shelf. 3) The rolling type light-shelf system suggested in this study enables energy saving in comparison with existent light-shelf systems, and when the external illuminance decreases to 60,000 lx and 40,000 lx during the summer solstice due to factors such as the weather, the suggested light-shelf system can save energy by 12.1% and 5.1% respectively. Thus the light-shelf system proposed in this study is deemed to be effective in reducing energy costs.
