The well-conditioned observer in a stochastic system is designed so that the observer is less sensitive to the ill-conditioning factors in transient and steady-state observer performance. These factors include not only deterministic issues such as unknown initial estimation error, round-off error, modeling error and sensing bias, but also stochastic issues such as disturbance and sensor noise. In deterministic perspectives, a small value in the L$_2$ norm condition number of the observer eigenvector matrix guarantees robust estimation performance to the deterministic issues and its upper bound can be minimized by reducing the observer gain and increasing the decay rate. Both deterministic and stochastic issues are considered as a weighted sum with a LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) formulation. The gain in the well-conditioned observer is optimally chosen by the optimization technique. Simulation examples are given to evaluate the estimation performance of the proposed observer.

This paper presents a method using Maximum-Likelihood Linear Regression (MLLR) adaptation to improve recognition performance of Limabeam algorithm for speech recognition using microphone array. From our investigation on Limabeam algorithm, we can see that the performance of filtering optimization depends strongly on the supporting optimal state sequence and this sequence is created by using Viterbi algorithm trained with HMM model. So we propose an approach using MLLR adaptation for the recognition of speech uttered in a new environment to obtain better optimal state sequence that support for the filtering parameters' optimal step. Experimental results show that the system embedded with MLLR adaptation presents the word correct recognition rate 2% higher than that of original calibrate Limabeam and also present 7% higher than that of Delay and Sum algorithm. The best recognition accuracy of 89.4% is obtained when we use 4 microphones with 5 utterances for adaptation.

In this paper, the relationship between k consecutive outputs of the conventional differential detector and output of differential detector with k-symbol periods delay for differential MSK and GMSK systems is investigated. It is hown that there exists periodity in modulo-2 sum and product of k successive outputs of the conventional differential detector with the output of a detector with k-symbol periods delay circuit. This relationships are used to achieve performance gains over conventional differential detection. The error rate performance of the method is carried out by computer simulation and performance improvement is achieved for differential MSK and GMSK systems.
When an incoming Global Positioning System (GPS) signal is acquired, pull-in search performs a finer search of the Doppler frequency of the incoming signal so that phase lock loop can be quickly stabilized and the receiver can produce an accurate pseudo-range measurement. However, increasing the accuracy of the Doppler frequency estimation often involves a higher computational cost for weaker GPS signals, which delays the position fix. In this paper, we show that the Doppler frequency detectable by a long coherent auto-correlation can be accurately estimated using a complex-weighted sum of consecutive short coherent auto-correlation outputs with a different Doppler frequency hypothesis, and by exploiting this we propose a noise resistant, low-cost and highly accurate Doppler frequency and phase estimation technique based on a reverse directional application of the finite rate of innovation (FRI) technique. We provide a performance and computational complexity analysis to show the feasibility of the proposed technique and compare the performance to conventional techniques using numerous Monte Carlo simulations.
Multiple-input multiple-output systems can achieve a full sum rate (SR) via full duplex (FD). However, its performance is degraded by self-interference (SI) that occurs between the transmitter and receiver at the same node and thus is constrained by error floors. Conversely, half duplex (HD) can avoid the SI albeit at lower spectral efficiency, and the slope of its error curve is determined by the diversity order. In this study, a link selection scheme based on switching between FD and HD is examined as a simple method to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of FD systems. In the proposed link selection algorithm, either FD or HD is selected based on the received minimum distance and signal-to-interference plus noise ratio. Simulation results indicate that the proposed hybrid FD/HD switching system offers significant BER performance improvement when compared with that of the conventional FD and FD based on only the received minimum distance under the same fixed SR. Under relatively sufficient SI cancellation, it is demonstrated to outperform the HD with a diversity advantage in low and medium signal-to-noise ratio region.
We investigate a relative contribution from short to long-term flaring rate to predicting M and X-class flare probabilities. In this study, we consider magnetic parameters summarizing distribution and non-potentiality by Solar Dynamics Observatory/Helioseimic and Magnetic Imager and flare list by Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites. A short-term rate is the number of major flares that occurred in an given active region (AR) within one day before the prediction time. A mid-term rate is a mean flaring rate from the AR appearance day to one day before the prediction time. A long-term rate is a rate determined from a relationship between magnetic parameter values of ARs and their flaring rates from 2010 May to 2015 April. In our model, the predicted rate is given by the combination of weighted three rates satisfying that their sum of the weights is 1. We calculate Brier skill scores (BSSs) for investigating weights of three terms giving the best prediction performance using ARs from 2015 April to 2018 April. The BSS (0.22) of the model with only long-term is higher than that with only short-term or mid-term. When short or mid-term are considered additionally, the BSSs are improved. Our model has the best performance (BSS = 0.29) when all three terms are considered, and their relative contribution from short to long-term rate are 19%, 23%, and 58%, respectively. This model seems to be more effective when predicting active solar ARs having several major flares.

This paper proposes a selectively cumulative sum (S-CUSUM) control chart with variable sampling intervals (VSI) for detecting shifts in the process mean. The basic idea of the VSI S-CUSUM chart is to adjust sampling intervals and to accumulate previous samples selectively in order to increase the sensitivity. The VSI S-CUSUM chart employs a threshold limit to determine whether to increase sampling rate as well as to accumulate previous samples or not. If a standardized control statistic falls outside the threshold limit, the next sample is taken with higher sampling rate and is accumulated to calculate the next control statistic. If the control statistic falls within the threshold limit, the next sample is taken with lower sampling rate and only the sample is used to get the control statistic. The VSI S-CUSUM chart produces an 'out-of-control' signal either when any control statistic falls outside the control limit or when L-consecutive control statistics fall outside the threshold limit. The number L is a decision variable and is called a 'control length'. A Markov chain model is employed to describe the VSI S-CUSUM sampling process. Some useful formulae related to the steady state average time-to signal (ATS) for an in-control state and out-of-control state are derived in closed forms. A statistical design procedure for the VSI S-CUSUM chart is proposed. Comparative studies show that the proposed VSI S-CUSUM chart is uniformly superior to the VSI CUSUM chart or to the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) chart with respect to the ATS performance.
This study is to compare the effect of estrus synchronization and embryo transfer between Korean and Mongolian cattle. Embryos were collected from 9 donors housed in Asan city in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. Embryos were collected 9 donors from Khushaat sum, Selenge province and Bayanchandmani sum, Tov province in Mongolia. Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Controlled Internal Drug Release (CIDR) and Prostaglandin (PG) were used for superovulation. Subsequently, Artificial Insemination (AI) was done for donor cow and embryo was collected after 7 and 8 days. Collected embryos were compared between Mongolian and Korean cattle. Finally, good quality and fresh embryos were transferred to 50 and 22 recipients of cows in Korea and Mongolia respectively. The findings show that Korean native cattle each donor cow produced on an average 16.9 embryos and, 10.9 embryos were found transferable. But in case of Mongolia the average production of embryos per donor cow was 8.6 embryos and, 6.2 embryos were found transferable. Embryo collection after 7 and 8 days was not difference in embryo production in Korea. But, in Mongolia embryo production after 8 days was found more efficient than the 7 days. Korean native recipient's cows (74.6%) and Mongolian recipient's cows (71.0%) respectively were found transferable ovarian stage. The result suggested that efficiency of embryo production from the superovulation method treated of Korean cow were higher than the Mongolian cow. The pregnancy rate of Korea native cattle was 72%, which was about 10% higher than that of Mongolia cattle.
We propose a new hierarchical motion estimator architecture that supports the advanced prediction mode of recent low bit-rate video coders such as H.263 and MPEG-4. In the proposed VLSI architecture, a basic searching unit (BSU) is commonly utilized for all hierarchical levels to make a systematic and small sized motion estimator. Since the memory bank of the proposed architecture provides scheduled data flow for calculating 8$\times$8 block-based sum of absolute difference (SAD), both a macroblock-based motion vector (MV) and four block-based MVs are simultaneously obtained for each macroblock in the advanced prediction mode. The proposed motion estimator gives similar coding performance compared with full search block matching algorithm (FSBMA) while achieving small size and satisfying the advanced prediction mode.
Lip reading is a field of image processing to assist the process of sound recognition. In some environment, the capture of sound signal usually has significant noise and therefore, the recognition rate of sound signal decreases. Lip reading can be a good feature for the increase of recognition rates. Conventional lip extraction methods have been proposed widely. Maia et. al. proposed a method by the sum of Cr and Cb. However, there are two problems as follows: the point with maximum saturation is not always regarded as lips region and the inner part of lips such as oral cavity and teeth can be classified as lips. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a method which adopts the histogram-based classifier for the extraction of lips region. The proposed method consists of two stages, learning and test. The amount of computation is minimized because this method has no color conversion. The performance of proposed method gives 66.8% of detection rate compared to 28% of conventional ones.
