  • For the fast construction and replacement of bridges in urban area, a prefabricated bridge system can be an excellent alternative. Details of prefabricated slabs for PSC girders were developed and static tests on shear connections were conducted to propose design equations of the shear connection. Stirrups and stud connectors were used as shear connectors and non-shrink mortar was used for the filling material in shear pockets for shear connectors. Stirrups and studs were fabricated to insert embedded nut-type devices in PSC girders. Shear strength of the shear connection considering chemical bond, friction and mechanical connectors was evaluated and empirical equations were suggested. Due to the mechanical connectors, ultimate slip capacity of the shear connection was sufficient for shear load redistribution, and suggested details of the shear connection showed good performance in terms of strength and ductility.

  • Although there are strong needs for evaluating statistical characteristics of strengthened reinforced concrete beams under flexure, many researches have been performed mostly on the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms. Different material properties and resulting reinforcing effect could alter the probabilistic values of the strengthened beams. Existing equations suggested for predicting flexural strengthened reinforced concrete beam with CFRP and steel plate are selected and best-fitting one is used in evaluating probability of failure based on Monte-Carlo method. Influential factors are statistically examined and approximate strength reduction factors are suggested. It was found that the factor is more sensitively influenced by predictive equations as well as characteristics and amounts of strengthening materials.

  • An efficient sequential computation algorithm of kinematic optimal control is suggested for redundancy resolution of freefloating manipulators. Utilization of minimum principle usually requires involved and tedious procedure of differentiation of Hamiltonian. Due to the constraints of momentum conservation, it is not easy to get exact differential equations of boundary value problem for even relatively simple free-floating manipulator models. To overcome this difficulty, we developed an effective sequential algorithm for the computation of terms appeared in the differential equations. The usefulness of suggested approach is verified by simulation of a planar 3-joints free-floating manipulator.

  • Moist curing of concrete is a time consuming procedure. It takes minimum 28 days of curing to obtain the characteristic strength of concrete. However, under certain situations such as shortage of time, weather conditions, on the spot changes in project and speedy construction, waiting for entire curing period becomes unaffordable. This situation demands early strength of concrete which can be met using accelerated curing methods. It becomes necessary to obtain early strength of concrete rather than waiting for entire period of curing which proves to be uneconomical. In India, accelerated curing methods are used to arrive upon the actual strength by resorting to the equations suggested by Bureau of Indian Standards' (BIS). However, it has been observed that the results obtained using above equations are exaggerated. In the present experimental investigations, the results of the accelerated compressive strength of the concrete are used to develop the regression models for predicting the short term and long term compressive strength of concrete. The proposed regression models show better agreement with the actual compressive strength than the existing model suggested by BIS specification.

  • This research is based on the iterative space-marching method for incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations[1-4]. A principle of parallel computational schemes construction for steady and unsteady problems is suggested. It is analytically proven that convergence of these schemes is unconditional for incompressible case. When the parallel scheme is used the total volume of computations is the sum of a large number of independent and equal parts. Estimation of the speed-up K shows that K > 1000 in ideal case. First results of using the parallel schemes are presented.

  • The relationships between compression index, $C_c$, which is the slope of the e-log p curve from consolidation test, and other physical properties of remolded and undisturbed clays were examined. After examined, it is clarified that the $C_c$-initial porosity, $n_0$, relationship is better correlation than the $C_c$-other factors relationship, and a new $C_c$ equations using $n_0$ for remolded and undisturbed clays were suggested.

  • In this paper we consider a class of singularly perturbed system of delay differential equations of convection diffusion type with integral boundary conditions. A finite difference scheme on an appropriate piecewise Shishkin type mesh is suggested to solve the problem. We prove that the method is of almost first order convergent. An error estimate is derived in the discrete maximum norm. Numerical experiments support our theoretical results.

  • Because of the flat slope of the magnetic characteristic curves at high saturation, the transformer inrush current peakes may assume an extreme magnitude. Even though such is rarely any danger to the transformer itself, the currents can cause serious problems in associated apparatus. This paper has analyzed various limiting factors of excess inrush currents, and then has suggested how to determine the frequency of encountering the inrush current peaks higher than an arbitrarily chosen value by deriving the probability equations of inrush current occurrence.

  • The ice keel gouge and seabed interaction is one of the major considerations in the design of an Arctic pipeline system. Ice keel and seabed interaction engineering models based on experimental data, which give an explicit equation for estimating the ice gouging depth, have been suggested. The suggested equations usually overestimate the ice keel gouging depth. In addition, various types of numerical analyses have been carried out to verify the suggested engineering model equations in comparison to the experimental data. However, most of numerical analysis results were also overestimated compared with the laboratory experimental data. In this study, a numerical analysis considering the contact condition and geostatic stress was carried out to predict the ice keel gouging depth and compared with the previous studies. Considering the previously mentioned conditions, more accurate results were produced compared with the laboratory experiment results and the error rate was reduced compared to previous numerical analysis studies.
