  • A dramatic development in the new technology of copying materials has presented us with massive problems on reconciling the conflicts between copyright owners and potential users of copyrighted materials. The adaptation to this changing condition led some countries to revise their copyright laws such as in the U. S. in 1976 and in Korea in 1984 for merging with the international or universal copyright conventions in the future. Copyright defined as exclusive rights given to copyright owners aims to secure a fair return for an author's creative labor and to stimulate artistic creativity for the general public good. The exclusive rights on copyrightable matters, generally for reproduction, preparation of derivative works, public distribution, public performance, and public display, are limited by fair use for scholarship and criticism and by library reproduction for its preservation and interlibrary loan. These limitations on the exclusive rights are concerned with all aspects of library services and cause a great burden on librarian's daily duty to provide balance between the rights of creators and the needs of library patrons. The fair use as one of the limitations on it has been coupled with enormous growth of a new technology and extended from xerography to online database systems. The implementation of the fair use and library reprography in Korean law to the local practices is examined on the basis of the new American copyright act of 1976. Under the draft revision of Korean law, librarians will face many potential problems as summarized below. 1. Because the new provision of 'life time plus 50 years' will tie up substantial bodies of material longer than the old law, until that date librarians would need permissions from the owners and should pay attention to the author's death date. 2. Because the copyright can be sold, distributed, given to the heirs, donated, as a whole or a part, librarians should chase down the heirs and other second owners. In case of a derivative work, this is a real problem. 3. Since a work has its protection from the moment of its creation, the coverage of copyrightable matter would be extended to the published or the unpublished works and librarian's work load would be heavier. Without copyright registration, no one can be certain that a work is in the public domain. Therefore, librarians will need to check with an authority. 4. For implementation of limitations on exclusive rights, fair use and library reproduction for interlibrary loan, there can be no substantial aggregate use and there can be no systematic distribution of multicopies. Therefore, librarians should not substitute reproductions for subscriptions or purchases. 5. For the interlibrary loan by photocopying, librarians should understand the procedure of royalty payment. 6. Compulsory licenses should be understood by librarians. 7. Because the draft revision of Korean law is a reciprocal treaty, librarians should take care of other countries' copyright law to protect foreign authors from Korean law. In order to solve the above problems, some suggestions are presented below. 1. That copyright clearinghouse or central agency as a centralized royalty payment mechanism be established. 2. That the Korean Library Association establish a committee on copyright. 3. That the Korean Library Association propose guidelines for each occasion, e.g. for interlibrary loan, books and periodicals and music, etc. 4. That the Korean government establish a copyright office or an official organization for copyright control other than the copyright committee already organized by the government. 5. That the Korean Library Association establish educational programs on copyright for librarians through seminars or articles written in its magazines. 6. That individual libraries provide librarian's copyright kits. 7. That school libraries distribute subject bibliographies on copyright law to teachers. However, librarians should keep in mind that limitations on exclusive rights are not for an exemption from library reprography but as a convenient access to library resources.

  • A variety of searcher traits, characteristics, subject background and behaviors have been the subject of investigations exploring various hypotheses relating to searching performances. Previous studies have focused on searchers personal characteristics such as training, experience, subject knowledge, intelligence, cognitive style, attitude and searching style, Each of these factors is examined in this paper in order to find out searcher's personal characteristics affecting searching performance. Surprisingly, searching training and experience have not been found to influence searching performance. The hypothesis that intellectual ability correlates with the ability to online search seems to have little effect Various cognitive styles of searchers were tested to find out whether they relate to search results. Only FD/Fl cognitive style were found to be significant in relation to search results. Searchers showed a variety of attitudes about online searching. They revealed sensitivity toward searching charges. The attitude toward charges was reflected on the searching behavior. The sensitive searchers tend to conduct cost-effective searches, Searching styles of intermediaries were characterized as interactive and fast batch. It was found that experienced searchers prefer simple searches which do not explore the interactive capabilities of online system. In summary, previous studies have confirmed that there are apparently great individual differences among online searchers in searching behaviors as well as attitudes. But relationships between these individual differences and search performance were too weak to be significant.

  • This study attempts to verify the hypothesis that the interdisciplinary communication patterns may be different according to each disciplines. To put it concretely, it is intended to analyze and compare the subject distribution, the format, the age, the origin and the language of the documents of other disciplines cited in the journal articles according to each disciplines. To test the hypothesis philosophy, sociology and physics as the sample for the three disciplines, that is, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences are sellected, and the documents cited in the journal articles published in 1966, 1971. 1976, 1981 and 1986 by the Korean Philosophical Association, the Korean Sociological Association and the Korean Physical Society are collected. And then the subject distribution, the format, the age, the origin, the language, and their use rate of the documents of other disciplines cited in the journal articles are investigated, analyzed and compared according to each disciplines. Some findings and conclusions made in the study are as follows. 1. The subject distribution of documents of other disciplines cited and its distribution ratio are different according to each disciplines, that is, humanities high, natural sciences low and social sciences medium. 2. The format and the use rate of documents of other disciplines cited are different according to each disciplines. In the three disciplines book and journal are more used than any format of documents in interdisciplinary communication while in case of the humanities and social sciences book is more used than journal, and in case of the natural sciences journal is more used than book in that communication. 3. The age and the use rate of the cited documents of other disciplines are different according to each disciplines. In case of the social sciences and natural sciences the documents of its last 20 years of publication are cited concentrately, and in case of the humanities the literature age is unconcerned. 4. The origin and the language of the cited documents of other disciplines, and its use rate are different according to each disciplines. In the humanities and natural sciences the documents published in foreign country are cited concentrately, and in the social sciences the home publication documents are more cited than the foreign. The documents of other disciplines in English language are most cited among the documents in any foreign languages in interdisciplinary communication. Putting the three disciplines in order of the use rate of the documents in English language, the natural sciences is high, the humanities medium, and the social sciences low. In the social sciences the use rate of the documents of other disciplines in Korean language is high while in the humanities and natural sciences slight.

  • This study investigated general problems concerning the tourism field in the KDC 6th edition based comparative analysis academic characteristics and classification system, and suggested on some ideas for the improvements of them. Results of the study are summarized as follows. First, academic field of tourism is generally divided into a general tourism, tourists, tourism attraction, and tourism media, but classification system of tourism is limited to parts of tourism attraction and a general tourism. Tourism attraction and tourism media are dispersed among the subject. Second, I analyzed on tourism from the collection database at the National Library of Korea. Based on analysis of the data. the keyword frequency of tourism management, type, development, psychology, industry, and convention etc. was relatively high. Third, modified classification of items was basically performed through the academic characteristics of the tourism and the keyword analysis, and maintaining the existing KDC classification system caused less confusion as much as possible. Also, based on this matter was added to the relative indexes.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of juvenile books on Korea and Japan in WorldCat and observe the possibility of diffusing knowledge on each country. The distribution of bibliographic records of books published from 1993 through 2012, and especially the books published in 1997, when the numbers of books on both countries were the closest, were analyzed in detail in terms of language, genre, subject headings, and holding libraries. The result shows much fewer bibliographic records of juvenile books on Korea than those of books on Japan, and their growing gap every year. There were also much fewer holding libraries and copies of books on Korea, published in 1997, compared to books on Japan. The texts were mostly written in Korean and in tones set for very young readers. A serious lack of diversity in subjects and genres with the focus on Korean folklores and anecdotal biographies were also observed. Therefore, there seems to be nothing much interesting to read that would help promote the diffusion of knowledge on Korea through libraries around the world.

  • The purpose of this article is to examine the research trends of 'bibliography' in Korea. By utilizing citation analysis methods, total 1,321 cited references of the 51 articles published by ${\ulcorner}Journal of the Institute of Bibliography{$\lrcorner}$ in 2000 and 2001 are analysed. This analysis is focused on an article's subjects and authors'occupations, the numbers and journal categories of its cited references. Also, this study observes the nationalities and languages of cited references and various items related to authors of cited references. The most of findings of this study are similar to the previous studies. However, it could find that there are minor differences from the existing literatures, in respect to subject areas, the number of cited references and the forms of cited references. In conclusion, this study recommends that bibliographers's collaborative works with related fields such as history and library and information science need to be strengthened, and that qualitative apaches as well as citation analysis methods might be beneficial for further expansion of academic scope of 'bibliography'.
