Developing a Faceted Classification Scheme Integrated with a Thesaurus for Literature (시소러스를 연계한 문학류 패싯 분류체계 개발)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a faceted classification scheme linked with a thesaurus(FCT) to more effectively organize documents according to subject, by transforming the current Korean Decimal Classification system(KDC) into a faceted classification scheme and linking it with Korea’s National Library Subject Headings. This combination should represent complex subjects more clearly, allow users to change citation order, and facilitate the addition of new subjects to the KDC scheme. Furthermore, by linking a thesaurus to the classification scheme, it is possible to share facets and expand the conceptual level of headings through the thesaurus descriptors.

  • Subject classification of thesis units is essential to serve scholarly information deliverables. However, to date, there is a journal-based topic classification, and there are not many article-level subject classification services. In the case of academic papers among domestic works, subject classification can be a more important information because it can cover a larger area of service and can provide service by setting a range. However, the problem of classifying themes by field requires the hands of experts in various fields, and various methods of verification are needed to increase accuracy. In this paper, we try to classify topics using the unsupervised learning algorithm to find the correct answer in the unknown state and compare the results of the subject classification algorithms using the coherence and perplexity. The unsupervised learning algorithms are a well-known Hierarchical Dirichlet Process (HDP), Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) and Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) algorithm.

Subject Independent Classification of Implicit Intention Based on EEG Signals

  • Brain computer interfaces (BCI) usually have focused on classifying the explicitly-expressed intentions of humans. In contrast, implicit intentions should be considered to develop more intelligent systems. However, classifying implicit intention is more difficult than explicit intentions, and the difficulty severely increases for subject independent classification. In this paper, we address the subject independent classification of implicit intention based on electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Among many machine learning models, we use the support vector machine (SVM) with radial basis kernel functions to classify the EEG signals. The Fisher scores are evaluated after extracting the gamma, beta, alpha and theta band powers of the EEG signals from thirty electrodes. Since a more discriminant feature has a larger Fisher score value, the band powers of the EEG signals are presented to SVM based on the Fisher score. By training the SVM with 1-out of-9 validation, the best classification accuracy is approximately 65% with gamma and theta components.

  • General-purpose classification scheme encompasses all subject areas, While the whole classification scheme is constructed by library studies experts, structure and preparation of each specific subject area's classification should be referenced to that specific subject. In order for the whole system to be practical and useful classification scheme, not just a simple collection of each subject area's scheme, it is necessary to set the rule for properly distributing the amount of classification items, and the collections assigned to these items. The rule to set the distribution of items based on the amount of document collections is called 'literary warrant'. This study examines actual status of assignment of each classification items to information resources, as a result of application of Korean Decimal Classification, and then suggests a way to improve these practices.

  • The object of this study is 27 patients who had been treated in the Oriental Medical Hospital at Dong Eui Medical Center during 6 months from January 1998 to June 1998. We proceeded the judgment of Sasang Constitution by Questionaire of Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCC II). The following conclusion were made in comparison with Questionaire of Sasang Constitution Classification II(QSCC II) and Questionaire of Pusan Sasang seminar. 1. The subject of "the facial type is small and sharp" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Taeumin group and Soyangin group. 2. The subject of "the walking form is fast and shake the body" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Taeumin group and Soeumin group is less than Soyangin group. 3. The subject of "the skin type is white and thin" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Soyangin group, and the frequency of Taeumin group is low marks. 4. The subject of "the skin type is tender and dry" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Taeumin group and Soyangin group is less than Soeumin group. 5. The subject of "the image of face is smart" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Soeumin group is more than Taeumin group and the frequency of Soyangin group is low marks. 6. The subject of "the sweating type is not sweatier" is significant differences in Sasang Constitution classification. The frequency of Taeumin group and Soeumin group is less than Soyangin group. 7. A Study on Expansion of Headings for Digital Trends of Korean Decimal Classification (한국십진분류법의 디지털 관련 항목명 확장전개에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the expansion of headings for digital trends of Korean Decimal Classification. In order to achieve the purpose, this study first analyzed the change process of classification items related to digital resources in DDC and KDC. Second, subject names related to digital in LCSH and Korean National Library Subject Heading were analyzed. Third, comparisons between the items related to digital of DDC 23rd with LCSH and KDC with Korean National Library Subject Heading were conducted. The result of comparative analysis was identified that KDC 6th edition faces with difficulties in reasonable classification because item names related to digital of KDC 6th edition have 11 items. Therefore, the item related to digital has to be expanded to new classification item name and has to add include notes and class here notes in KDC.

  • The aim of this study is 1) to analyse the historical development and current condition of the subject based classification(SBC), 2) to clarify the function and to categorize the specific kind of SBC, for its conceptualization and the development plan. For this purpose, almost 30 cases, for the period 1937 through now, were analyzed concerning their terms used in the names and the specific kinds as SBC. In addition, the analysis was made regarding how the SBC fulfill the selected main functions as a classificatory scheme and how SBC is inter-related with the other knowledge organization systems(KOS) such as classification and subject heading. Based on the above analysis, the conclusion addressed that SBC could be defined in consideration of the detailed function, type, information environment, and interconnection among the KOS, and suggested the future development plan of SBC as a classification scheme.

A Study on Brown's Subject Classification (브라운의 주제분류법 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the first edition of Brown's Subject Classification and to understand the implications of today's library classification. For this purpose, the first edition of the Subject Classification published in 1906 was analyzed. The analysis results are divided into three main areas. First, SC is divided into eleven main classes and each class is subdivided into enumerated subdivisions from 000 to 999. Second, As a method of synthesizing the classification numbers, there were three methods of synthesis. There was a flexibility to insert a new classification number at the appropriate location when a new topic that does not appear in the main table appeared. Implications for classification studies can be divided into four main categories. First, SC proposed a method of classification number synthesis for composite topics, which is an innovative method that was not available in previous library classification. Second, the subject matter was explained in various aspects through the operation of auxiliary tables supporting the facets. Third, it is possible to easily insert a new topic into the classification system by using the SC that can have a flexible classification system for each library, or to use a short classification number according to the size of the library collection. Fourth, it provided a directory that can be considered as access points for digital materials.

A Study on Classification System for using internet information resources on Interior Design (인테리어 디자인 분야 인터넷 정보 자원 활용을 위한 분류체계 연구)

  • This study is aimed to grasp the organization of Internet information resources and to infer the characteristics of resource search engines so that criteria may be established to classify and evaluate Internet information resources. In addition, the author has compared and analyzed interior design classification systems of directory sites of each subject that provide classification system based on the Internet, foreign sites to be used to search for information, and domestic information-specialized sites in order to set up models of interior design classification systems of directories of each Web subject. The systems have been analyzed against such four measures as comprehensiveness of the subject scope, logicality of classification systems, preciseness of subject terms, and effectiveness of searches. Information of interior designs is mixed with that of related fields, and so its information search and classification are not organized systematically. The author has analyzed such a problem so as to present models of search engine classification systems for interior design information classification after considering both academic and practical aspects.

Type of Classification Criterion and Characteristic of Classification Strategy That Appear in Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Classification Activity (예비 초등 교사들의 분류 활동에서 나타난 분류 기준의 유형과 분류 전략의 특징)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the type of classification criterion and the characteristic of classification strategy that appear in pre-service elementary teachers' classification activity. The 4 tasks were developed for classification activity; button as a real things that attribute is prominent, shell as a real things that attribute is less prominent, snow flake as a picture cards that attribute is prominent, and galaxy as a picture cards that attribute is less prominent. The 5 college students who major in elementary education were selected. Data were collected by interview with participants, participants' classification recording paper, investigator's observation of participants' action observation, and videotaped that record participants' subject classification process. Result proved in this study is as following. First, pre-service elementary teachers used 4 qualitative classification criterion of feature, random field, image and secondary property, and used 2 dimension classification criterion of space and quantity. They used single quality classification criterion or combining dimension classification criterion in classification activity. Second, pre-service elementary teachers have classification strategy that apply each various classification criterion, and also classification strategy are different according to subject, but discussed that "anchor" and "priming effect" are important for effective classification. Result of this study is expected to contribute classification research and classification teaching program development.
