  • This study was conducted in order to assess the effect of variables influencing Korean baby-boomers' welfare consciousness. For this purpose, data from the $8^{th}$ supplementary survey of the Korea Welfare Panel in 2013 were analyzed. The subjects of analysis were 2,035 people who were born between 1955 and 1965 whose welfare panel data did not have missing values for the variables of the research model. According to the results of analysis, first, when the descriptive statistics of the major variables were analyzed, those showing a relatively high mean score among the sub-factors of the baby-boomers' welfare consciousness were 'expansion of expenditure for public assistance' (mean 3.65, SD .557), 'expansion of expenditure for social insurance' (mean 3.53, SD .646), and 'expansion of expenditure for social services' (mean 3.26, SD .424). The mean score of the baby-boomers' overall welfare consciousness was relatively high as 3.45 (SD .428), advocating the expansion of welfare expenditure. Second, the independent variables influencing the baby-boomers' welfare consciousness was found to have explanatory power of 12.9%. In the results of regression analysis, variables found to have a significant effect were gender (B=.100, t=2.573, p<.01), personal responsibility for poverty (B=-.151, t=-3.635, p<.01), social responsibility for poverty (B=.149, t=3.437, p<.001), and recipient's laziness (B=.251, t=6.578, p<.001). Based on these results were discussed major relevant policies.

  • This study examines the effect of family resources on low-income families by exploring their holistic experience of poverty to the formation of resilience. A grounded theory approach is utilized to structure process from their experience of poverty as well as the use of social welfare services to the formation of resilience. This study targets 17 families involved in the pilot project for the beneficiaries of an asset building program in Seoul. In accordance with open coding and a paradigm model by the result of axial coding, 86 concepts, 23 sub-category, and nine categories are produced. These categories are classified into the causal condition (a tough life due to poverty), contextual condition (being the recipient of an asset building program), intervening conditions (interpersonal resources and effects of accumulated time or experience), central phenomenon (a will to live and overcome poverty), actions/interactions (active behavior and change of attitude), and consequences (change of asset levels and increased efficacy in their lives). The integrating categories identify the core category as 'the process of making a resilient life out of the power to live' and a final process model is organized. The results suggest crucial implications to develop comprehensive policies to address poverty issues for low-income families with a strength-based approach.

  • For the construction safety manager, it is expected that job stress is significantly high due to lack of expertise about new technology, new construction methods, and enlargement of scale as well as due to work intensity and unstable work hours. It is probable that such an increase in job stress not only has bad effects on individual, but also the bad effects spread to construction industry at large, resulting in rise in accident rate, increase in direct and indirect loss cost, and loss of reputation. In this context, methods for controlling construction safety manager's job stress are needed at the levels of both government and company. Therefore, this study investigated and analyzed the effects of construction safety manager's job stress on job satisfaction and job commitment, and proposed methods for relieving job stress. In addition, this study was suggested policies for higher job satisfaction and job commitment at the levels of the government and companies.

  • This paper considers a continuous-review two-echelon inventory control problem with one-to-one replenishment policy incorporated and with lost sales allowed where demand arrives in a stationary Poisson process. The problem is formulated using METRIC-approximation in a combined approach of pricing and (S-l, S) inventory policy, for which a heuristic solution algorithm is derived with respect to the corresponding one-warehouse multi-retailer supply chain. Specifically, decisions on retail pricing and warehouse inventory policies are made in integration to maximize total profit in the supply chain. The objective function of the model consists of sub-functions of revenue and cost (holding cost and penalty cost). To test the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm, numerical experiments are performed with two cases. The first case deals with identical retailers and the second case deals with different retailers with different market sizes. The computational results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and derives quite good decisions.

  • Purpose - This paper examines the value relevance of socially responsible activities in the Korean retail firms. Recent studies predict positive relationships between socially responsible activities and the value of corporation. Research design, data, and methodology - We use the environmental score, social score, governance score and the sum of these three scores to represent a fim's effectiveness of socially responsible activities. These scores are published by the Korean Corporate Governance Service. This paper adopts a share price valuation model to evaluate the effect of socially responsible activities on a firm's share price, which controls for the book value of assets and current earnings. The ordinary least square method is employed to examine the relationship. The sample of Korea retail firms is examined from 2011 to 2016. We also conduct sub-sample analysis based on the categorization of chaebol affiliates and non-chaebol affiliates. Results - The entire sample analysis finds neither negatively nor positively significant relationship between socially responsible activities and the value of a corporation. In contrast, our examinations find a significantly positive valuation effect of social score within non-chaebol retail firms. Conclusions - The results weakly support the positive valuation effect of socially responsible activities. The results are consistent with recent studies that highlight heterogeneous effects of socially responsible activities on corporate policies and valuation.

  • The European Union (EU) has introduced the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS) as one of the key policies to reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions and in July 2008, they decided to include aviation in the scheme. As soon as the decision was announced the EU ETS was met by sharp opposition from world governments and international aviation. A group of US airlines, in particular, dropped a lawsuit against the British government over aviation's inclusion in the EU ETS. On 21 December, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled that aviation's inclusion in the EU ETS which covers all flights arriving into and departing from the EU is legal and does not contravene international law. The scheme eventually came into effect on 1 January 2012. However, most countries are in opposition to the EU ETS and have agreed on counter-measures to undermine the EU's plan which may bring chaos to the aviation industry if such measures were to put into practice. This study therefore will analyze the likely effects that may be brought to the Korean aviation industry as a result of the inclusion of aviation in the EU ETS. Further, it hopes to contribute to the Korean aviation industry by studying other countries' counter-measures in advance.

  • Self healing systems are considered as cognation-enabled sub form of fault tolerance system. But our experiments that we report in this paper show that self healing systems can be used for performance optimization, configuration management, access control management and bunch of other functions. The exponential complexity that results from interaction between autonomic systems and users (software and human users) has hindered the deployment and user of intelligent systems for a while now. We show that if that exceptional complexity is converted into self-growing knowledge (policies in our case), can make up for initial development cost of building an intelligent system. In this paper, we report the application of AHSEN (Autonomic Healing-based Self management Engine) to in OKKAM Project infrastructure backbone cluster that mimics the web service based architecture of u-Zone gateway infrastructure. The 'blind' load division on per-request bases is not optimal for distributed and performance hungry infrastructure such as OKKAM. The approach adopted assesses the active threads on the virtual machine and does resource estimates for active processes. The availability of a certain server is represented through worker modules at load server. Our simulation results on the OKKAM infrastructure show that the self healing significantly improves the performance and clearly demarcates the logical ambiguities in contemporary designs of self healing infrastructures proposed for large scale computing infrastructures.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate work stress and identify the various factors affecting stress in married women in working manufacturing industries. Data were collected between March 31 and June 28, 2003 from 266 married women working in 10 manufacturing industries in Korea. The self-administered questionnaire included general characteristics. social support, and work stress. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Cronbach's alpha. SPSS/win 11.0 was used to assist analysis. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Scores for work stress in the field of sub-categories 2. Perceived work stress was significantly different according to salary, behavior type, discomfort related to menstruation, consumption, duty type, job stability, weekly work time and family, 3. Social support had a significant negative relationship with work stress. Accordingly, stress management for married working women will be more successful if interventions not only address each person's unique needs, for example, control of perimenstrual discomforts and health behavior change, but also are accompanied by organizational management strategies and policies, for example, improvement of work environment and nursery facilities.

  • The global rise of greenhouse gas(GHG) emissions and its potentially devastating consequences require a comprehensive regulatory framework for reducing emissions, including those from the transport sector. alternative fuels and technologies have been promoted as a means for reducing the carbon intensity of the transport sector. Renewable fuel policies were historically motivated by energy security concerns, and to promoted agricultural industries. In the last decade, biofuels have also been discussed as low or net-zero carbon soures of energy for transportation. Hence, the development of biofuels has been supported by a range of policy instruments, including volumetric targets or blending mandates, tax incentives or penalties, preferential government purchasing, government funded research, development in world-wide. As one of the most powerfuel instruments, renewable fuel mandates require fuel producers to produce a pre-defined amount(or share) of biofuels and blend them with petroleum fuel. In this study, we reviewed Renewable Fuel Standard(RFS, USA), Renewable Transport Fules Obligation (RTFO, UK) as a renewable fuel mandate policy to reduce GHG. This includes not only mandate system for blending of biofuels in transport fuels, but also sustainability to use biofuels in this system.
