  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate nursing students' exposure experience to infectious diseases and their knowledge and performance for the nosocomial infection control. Method: The data was obtained from 292 nursing students having clinical experience at two university hospitals in Seoul from November 2005 to February 2006. Specific questionnaire was constructed and used for this study. The obtained data was analyzed by using the SPSS window program. Result: The results were as follow : 1. Among the evaluation scores of knowledge for the nosocomial infection control, the score of sterilization and the score of the intravenous therapy management were low(.14). 2. Among the evaluation scores of performance for the nosocomial infection control, the score of hand washing is low(1.63). 3. 86.3 percent of the nursing students had exposure experience to infectious disease. Many of them did not use the protective equipments in clinical experience nor took any treatment after the exposure to infectious diseases. Conclusion: Based on these results, we suggest that the programs for the nosocomial infection control should be developed for nursing students. It is also suggested that nursing students should be educated before their clinical experience to keep protected from the infection. In particular, the hand washing, sterilization and intravenous therapy management should be emphasized in the educational programs.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to compare and contrast the evaluation scores on students OSCE performance between the instructors and students according to the Bloom's taxonomy. Methods: A total of sixty six students in a nursing college in Seoul, Korea and four instructors were recruited in the study. The 28 sophomore students were assigned to an OSCE on intravenous injection, whereas 38 junior students on tracheostomy care. Knowledge levels were measured by the students using the researcher developed knowledge questionnaires, and the attitudes and skills by the students and instructors by the modified clinical performance checklists. The data were analyzed by SPSS 22.0 program. Results: For knowledge, the higher GPA of the previous semester was only significant factor of higher knowledge scores. There were statistically significant differences in scores of total (t=-2.740, p=.008) and skill (t=-2.528, p=0.014), but not in attitude between the instructors and students' evaluations. The students evaluated their skill scores significantly higher than those of the instructors. For knowledge, the higher GPA of the previous semester was the only significant factor of higher knowledge scores. In attitude scores, the students in higher grade significantly overestimated themselves (t=3.076, p=.003). Conclusion: Clinical performance assessment requires methodological validity and reliability for student to attain necessary clinical skills properly and efficiently. The findings of this study mandate various assessment methods for nursing simulation evaluations to be valid.

  • Purpose: Communication skills are considered as one of the essential requirements in medical education, and the training often involves exercising medical interviews with standardized patients(SP) or role play. This study investigated the helpfulness of the communication skills training programs for students' performance on the clinical performance examination (CPX). Methods: Fourth-year students who have taken one of two communication skills programs(exercising communication skills with SP or elective communication skill course with role play) completed a questionnaire on their evaluation of the helpfulness of communication skills programs immediately after finishing the CPX. Then, the programs were objectively assessed by comparing all fourth-year students' CPX scores between program participants and non-participants. Results: About 70% of participants answered that the programs were helpful to perform clinical clerkship and CPX. However, there was no difference in either the total CPX score or 2 categorical scores(integrated clinical encounter, communication and interpersonal skill) between program participants and non-participants. Conclusion: Although the students felt that the communication skills programs were helpful to their clinical activities, this study failed to find objective evidence of any effect of the programs on the CPX results. Communication skills training should be continued during clinical clerkship to maintain or enhance the skills, and it is necessary to introduce more effective methods for precise evaluation of students' communication skills.

  • National competency standards, which are the contents of the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to perform a job in industry, is organized by the country. the job performance was evaluated based on the National competency standards from the third-year grade of radiology students by using field-based training courses. according to the evaluation results, students showed over 93% satisfactory ratio of job performance in all radiography projection methods. Therefore, it can be predicted that field-based training courses for students made a positive effect on improving their job performance. Exposure methods with CR equipment were evaluated the best rating, yet it has various problems. The standard deviation between students was very high, and the CR operation skill of students was insufficient. Film methods was evaluated also showed problems, due to the exposure condition setting and developing operation. although DR method was rated good to the students, it was evaluated that the operation skill of DR and the ancillary equipment operation skill was shortage. By supplementing the evaluation factors below proficiency levels to a course management in each exposure method, it could help students course achievement. Also, it could help students to improve job performance of clinical areas after graduation.
