  • A method of light pre-irradiation, one of methods modifying hydrophobic surface to hydrophilic surface in a membrane, was proposed to overcome the drawback of previous methods such as blending, chemical treatment and post-irradiation, Process of membrane preparation in the study was comprised of 4 parts as follows: firstly process of precursor preparation to introduce hydrophilic nature under atmosphere and aqueous vapor by irradiating electron beam (EB), secondly process of dope solution preparation to cast on non-woven fabrics, thirdly process of casting to prepare membrane and finally process of coagulation in non-solvent to form porous structure. The merit of this method might show simple process as well as homogenous modification compared to previous methods. To carry it out, precursor was prepared by irradiating EB to powder PVDF at 75~125 K Gray dose. Precursor prepared was analyzed by FTIR, EDS and DSC to confirm the introduction of hydrophilic function and its mechanism. From their results, it was inferred I conformed that hydrophilic function was hydroxy1 and it was introduced by dehydrozenation. Hydrophilicity of membranes prepared was evaluated by contact angle (pristine PVDF : $62^{\circ}$, 125 K Gray-PVDF$13^{\circ}$). Porosity was evaluated by mercury intrusion method, simultaneously morpholoy and surface pore size were observed by SEM phothographs. The result showed the trend that more dose of EB led to smaller pore size and to lower porosity (pristine PVDF : 82%, 125 K Gray-PVDF : 63%). Trend of water permeability was similar to result above (pristine PVDF : 892 LMH, 125 K Gray-PVDF : 355 LMH).

  • Long-wave infrared detectors using the type-II InAs/GaSb strained superlattice (T2SL) material system with the nBn structure were designed and fabricated. The band gap energy of the T2SL material was calculated as a function of the thickness of the InAs and GaSb layers by the Kronig-Penney model. Growth of the barrier material ($Al_{0.2}Ga_{0.8}Sb$) incorporated Te doping to reduce the dark current. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the $1^{st}$ satellite superlattice peak from the X-ray diffraction was around 45 arcsec. The cutoff wavelength of the fabricated device was ${\sim}10.2{\mu}m$ (0.12 eV) at 80 K while under an applied bias of -1.4 V. The measured activation energy of the device was ~0.128 eV. The dark current density was shown to be $1.0{\times}10^{-2}A/cm^2$ at 80 K and with a bias -1.5 V. The responsivity was 0.58 A/W at $7.5{\mu}m$ at 80 K and with a bias of -1.5 V.

  • Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) is one of the most important elements in meteorological and hydrological applications. In this study, we adjusted the QPE from an S-band weather radar based on co-kriging method using the geostatistical structure function of error distribution of radar rainrate. In order to estimate the accurate quantitative precipitation, the error of radar rainrate which is a primary variable of co-kriging was determined by the difference of rain rates from rain gauge and radar. Also, the gauge rainfield, a secondary variable of co-kriging is derived from the ordinary kriging based on raingauge network. The error distribution of radar rain rate was produced by co-kriging with the derived theoretical variogram determined by experimental variogram. The error of radar rain rate was then applied to the radar estimated precipitation field. Locally heavy rainfall case during 6-7 July 2009 is chosen to verify this study. Correlation between adjusted one-hour radar rainfall accumulation and rain gauge rainfall accumulation improved from 0.55 to 0.84 when compared to prior adjustment of radar error with the adjustment of root mean square error from 7.45 to 3.93 mm.

  • To assess the stress distribution of implant prosthesis induced by intentional misfit using photoelastic model. Stress was measured at the surrounding bone after applying vertical load to the implant. Three implants were placed in each of three photoelastic resin blocks. No misfits were used for the control group, while for the experimental group $100{\mu}m$ misfit after cutting the crown was used. The photoelastic stress analysis was performed. In control group, stress concentration was not shown when the load was not applied, whereas stress concentration was shown only in the loaded part even when load was applied and the stress was distributed in anterior-posterior direction when applying a load in the middle. When intentional misfits were given, stress around the fixture was incurred when tightening the screw even if load was not applied. If the load was applied, stress was concentrated around the implants including areas where the load was applied. In particular, the prosthesis made of UCLA showed more stress concentration as compared with a conical abutment. In the UCLA case, concentration was shown from the apex following through the axis to the cervical area. Prosthesis with misfit makes the stress concentrated though the load was not applied and it induces even more severe stress concentration when the load was applied. This founding demonstrates the importance of the correct prosthesis production.

  • To know what happens to the internal structure of emulsions under high shear flow is very important for cosmetic product development because it is highly relevant to the physical degradation of emulsions during the application upon the skin. Here, in order to investigate the response of emulsions against the external shear forces, we designed a new device, .JELLI$^{TM}$ (Joint Electro-rheometer for Liquid-Liquid Inversion) chip, for the measurement of electrical and rheological properties of emulsions under shear flow. By using this device, we examined the real-time changes in conductivities of oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions on the artificial skin during large deformation under shear flow. In this study, O/W and W/O emulsions having various volumes were prepared. After emulsions were homogeneously applied on the artificial skin, the electrical resistance and viscosity changes were monitored under steady shear flow. In case of O/W emulsions, the resistance increased as a function of time. The resistance showed more dramatic increase as the increase of the internal oil phase. It was also found that the viscosity change was proportional to the resistance variation. This phenomenon might be caused by decreased resisting forces against the shear flow because of the breakdown of the internal phase.the internal phase.

  • Transient receptor potential melastain 7 (TRPM7) is a bifunctional protein with dual structure of both ion channel and protein kinase, participating in a wide variety of diseases including cancer. Recent researches have reported the mechanism of TRPM7 in human cancers. However, the correlation between TRPM7 and prostate cancer (PCa) has not been well studied. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential the role of TRPM7 in the apoptosis of PC-3 cells, which is the key cell of advanced metastatic PCa. In this study, we demonstrated the influence and potential function of TRPM7 on the PC-3 cells apoptosis induced by TNF-related apoptosis inducing-ligand (TRAIL). The study also found a novel up-regulated expression of TRPM7 in PC-3 cells after treating with TRAIL. Suppression of TRPM7 by TRPM7 non-specific inhibitors ($Gd^{3+}$ or 2-aminoethoxy diphenylborate (2-APB) ) not only markedly eliminated TRPM7 expression level, but also increased the apoptosis of TRAIL-treated PC-3 cells, which may be regulated by the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway accompany with up-regulated expression of cleaved Caspase-3, (TRAIL-receptor 1, death receptors 4) DR4, and (TRAIL-receptor 2, death receptors 5) DR5. Taken together, our findings strongly suggested that TRPM7 was involved in the apoptosis of PC-3 cells induced by TRAIL, indicating that TRPM7 may be applied as a therapeutic target for PCa.

  • A series of composite membranes based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) were prepared via addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and solution casting method. The morphological structure, water uptake, proton conductivity of the resulting composite membranes were extensively investigated as function of the content of TEOS. By the sol-gel reaction, TEOS molecules were not completely converted to $SiO_2$ particles, but formed only oligomer-type. Also, EDS confirms that the resulting silicon dioxide was homogeneously distributed in the composite membranes. As the content of TEOS increased, the prepared membranes increased water uptake and proton conductivity at high temperature and low relative humidity condition. In particular, considerably high proton conductivity (0.015 S/cm) at $120^{\circ}C$ and 48%RH was demonstrated in the composite membrane containing 200% TEOS, which is 10 times greater than that of unmodified SPAES membrane. Also, the composite membranes were found to have enhanced thermal stability compared to the unmodified membrane.

  • Design rainfalls are one of the most important hydrologic data for river management, hydraulic structure design and risk analysis. The design rainfalls are first estimated by a point frequency analysis and the IDF (intensity-duration-frequency) curve is then constructed by a nonlinear regression to either interpolate or extrapolate the design rainfalls for other durations which are not used in the frequency analysis. It has been widely recognised that the more reliable approaches are required to better account for uncertainties associated with the model parameters under circumstances where limited hydrologic data are available for the watershed of interest. For these reasons, this study developed a hierarchical Bayesian based GLM (generalized linear model) for a regional frequency analysis in conjunction with a scaling function of the parameters in probability distribution. The proposed model provided a reliable estimation of a set of parameters for each individual station, as well as offered a regional estimate of the parameters, which allow us to have a regional IDF curve. Overall, we expected the proposed model can be used for different aspects of water resources planning at various stages and in addition for the ungaged basin.

  • Skin is the largest organ that protects the body from the external environmental factors such as smog, cigarette smoke, UV. Protective skin barrier is composed with keratinizational keratinocytes and intercellular lipids such as ceramides, cholesterols and fatty acids combined by the lamellar liquid crystal structure. In this research, we confirmed that the Jeju wild ginseng (JWG) extracts dose-dependently increased the expression of serine-palmitoyltransferase (SPT) protein which is associated with ceramide biosynthesis. In addition, emulsion containing 5% JWG extract was applied on skin of human volunteers for 2 weeks and then significantly reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) compared to that of control group. As a results, JWG extract increased the biosynthesis of ceramides that is the key components of the skin lipid through enhancing expression of SPT. In addition, JWG extract reduced TEWL resulting in improvement of skin barrier function. In this context, we suggest that JWG extract could be used as a skin barrier enhancer and moisturing agents in cosmetic fileds.
