Platycodon grandiflorum A. De Candolle (Korean name, ‘Doraji’) is a perennial plant containing various triterpenoid saponins. The roots of this plant have traditionally been used as a food material in Korea. Here, we prepared a fermented P. grandiflorum extract (PG). Although it was previously reported that P. grandiflorum A. extract has a variety of physiological functionalities, including anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, little is known about its vascular functions. In this study, we executed a series of experiments to identify the effect of PG on endothelial cells. PG at a high concentration (100 μg/ml) was found to induce cell detachment, whereas PG at a low concentration (0.1 μg/ml) appeared to promote cell proliferation and migration in bovine aortic endothelial cells. The cell detachment induced by the high concentration was not associated with cell death, such as apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy. In addition, we found that PG at the high concentration formed a small vesicular structure called an endothelial microparticle (EMP). The EMP was prepared by centrifugal fractionation and determined with flow cytometry and a microscope. Interestingly, PG-induced cell detachment was found to be mediated by EMP. We furthermore determined that PG at the low concentration activated Akt, a crucial cell-signaling molecule, and then controlled cell proliferation and migration. Overall, our findings suggest that PG at low doses maintains vascular stability by promoting endothelial cell proliferation, and enhances the efficacy of wound healing by cell proliferation and migration activity.
Many steepened slopes have become increasingly advantageous because of the desire to increase land usage and decrease site development costs. The proven concept of tensile reinforcement allows construction of slopes with far steeper face angles than the soils natural angle. Steepened slope face reinforced with improved soil can increase land usage substantially while providing a natural appearance. The paper presents composite reinforced earth with improved soil surface and geogrid-reinforced backfill. For the stability of the steepened slope, the behavior of the composite reinforced earth are validated and verified by case study and numerical analysis. The case study has performed to investigate the deformation of reinforce soil slope for 14 months. Its horizontal behavior by general vertical load shows within the safe range (0.5% of structure height). As a result of numerical analysis and case study, the reinforcement effect of the steepened slope technique using improved soil is sufficient to be constructed as reinforced soil slope.

In this study, 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate ionic liquid has been synthesized, characterized and tested with respect to carbon dioxide absorption with the aim to use it as advanced absorbent materials in fossil fuel processing. The ionic liquid was synthesized by a one step method, low cost. The thermal and chemical stability of selected ionic liquid has been investigated by DSC, TGA and the structure was verified by $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. The solubility of carbon dioxide in the methanesulfonate-based ionic liquids were measured using a high-pressure equilibrium apparatus equipped with a variable-volume view cell at 30, 50 and $70^{\circ}C$ and pressure up to 195 bar. The results show that carbon dioxide solubilities of 1-(2-methoxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate increased with pressure increasing and temperature decreasing, and the carbon dioxide absorption capacity showed 27.6 $CO_2/IL$(g/kg) at $30^{\circ}C$, 13 bar.

Surface wave (SW) surveys, which have been applied to numerous application fields ranging from micro-scale ultrasonic analysis to geological scale analysis, are widely used to monitor near-surface stability. The survey method is basically made through analysis on dispersion of SW propagating along the earth surface, in order to delineate shear velocity structure of subsurface. SW survey data are inverted with assuming one-dimensional (1D) layered-earth in order to recover shear wave velocities of each layer, after being analyzed to make the dispersion curve that shows phase velocity of SW with respect to frequency. This study reviews surface wave surveys with explaining the basic theory including the characteristics of dispersion and the procedure of general data processing. Even though surface wave surveys can be categorized into active and passive methods, this paper focuses only on active surface wave methods which includes continuous SW (CSW), spectral analysis of SW (SASW) and multichannel analysis of SW (MASW). Passive method will be reviewed in the subsequent paper.
Hollow carbon spheres (HCS) and carbon spheres (CS) were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction and they were introduced as a substrate for the deposition of $MnO_2$ nanoparticles. The $MnO_2$ nanoparticles were deposited on the carbon surface by a chemical redox deposition method. After deposition, the $MnO_2$ nanoparticles were uniformally distributed on the carbon surface in a slit-shape, and sparse $MnO_2$ slits appeared on the HCS surface. The $MnO_2-HCS$ showed an initial specific capacitance of $164.1F\;g^{-1}$ at scan rate of $20mv\;s^{-1}$, and after 1,000 cycles, the specific capacitance was maintained to $141.3F\;g^{-1}$. The capacity retention of $MnO_2-HCS$ and $MnO_2-CS$ were calculated to 86% and 78% in the cycle performance test up to 1,000 cycles, respectively. $MnO_2-HCS$ showed a good cycle stability due to the mesoporous hollow structure which can cause a faster diffusion of the electrolyte and can easily adsorb and desorb $Na^+$ ions on the surface of the electrode.
This study proposed a wind power generation system utilizing outdoor air on the rooftop and indoor ventilation, which would increase according to the building height, as a way to help to save energy consumption in a building by using wind power energy of the new renewable energy sources. The study measured the distribution of air currents and power generation according to the usage factor of exhaust pipes in the kitchen and bathroom and identified the elements to consider when applying a wind power generation system to buildings in order to use outdoor air on the rooftop increasing according to the height and the indoor ventilation produced in the facility vertical shafts inside the buildings by installing a wind power generation system on the rooftop. (1) The study measured the ventilation velocity of the kitchen hood and bathroom ventilation fan by changing the zone areas by the households according to the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=33~100%. As a result, the kitchen ventilation pipe generated the ventilation wind of 3.0m/s or more at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$] 66% or higher, and the bathroom ventilation pipe generated ventilation velocity lower than 3.0m/s, the blade velocity of the wind power generator, even after the usage factor rose to [${\alpha}$]=100%. (2) As the old bathroom ventilation pipe generated the ventilation velocity of 3.0m/s, the blade velocity of the wind power generator, even with the rising usage factor [${\alpha}$], the application of an outdoor air induction module increased the ventilation velocity by 2.9m/s at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=33%, 3.8m/s at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=66%, and 3.6m/s at the usage factor of [${\alpha}$]=100%. Thus the ventilation velocity of 3.0m/s, the blade velocity of the wind power generator, or higher was secured. (3) The findings prove that the applicability of a wind power generation system using outdoor air on the rooftop and indoor ventilation is excellent, which raises a need for various efforts to increase the possibility of its commercialization such as securing its structural stability according to momentary gusts on the rooftop and typhoons in summer and making the structure light to react to the wind directions of outdoor air on the rooftop according to the seasons.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate normalized jerk according to shoes, slope, and velocity during walking. Eleven different test subjects used three different types of shoes (running shoes, mountain climbing boots, and elevated forefoot walking shoes) at various walking speeds(1.19, 1.25, 1.33, 1.56, 1.78, 1.9, 2, 2.11, 2.33m/sec) and gradients(0, 3, 6, 10 degrees) on a treadmill. Since there were concerns about using the elevated forefoot shoes on an incline, these shoes were not used on a gradient. Motion Analysis (Motion Analysis Corp. Santa Rosa, CA USA) was conducted with four Falcon high speed digital motion capture cameras. Utilizing the maximum smoothness theory, it was hypothesized that there would be differences in jerk according to shoe type, velocity, and slope. Furthermore, it was assumed that running shoes would have the lowest values for normalized jerk because subjects were most accustomed to wearing these shoes. The results demonstrated that elevated forefoot walking shoes had lowest value for normalized jerk at heel. In contrast, elevated forefoot walking shoes had greater normalized jerk at the center of mass at most walking speeds. For most gradients and walking speeds, hiking boots had smaller medio-lateral directional normalized jerk at ankle than running shoes. These results alluded to an inverse ratio for jerk at the heel and at the COM for all types of shoes. Furthermore, as velocity increased, medio-lateral jerk was reduced for all gradients in both hiking boots and running shoes. Due to the fragility of the ankle joint, elevated forefoot walking shoes could be recommended for walking on flat surfaces because they minimize instability at the heel. Although the elevated forefoot walking shoes have the highest levels of jerk at the COM, the structure of the pelvis and spine allows for greater compensatory movement than the ankle. This movement at the COM might even have a beneficial effect of activating the muscles in the back and abdomen more than other shoes. On inclines hiking boots would be recommended over running shoes because hiking boots demonstrated more medio-lateral stability on a gradient than running shoes. These results also demonstrate the usefulness of normalized jerk theory in analyzing the relationship between the body and shoes, walking velocity, and movement up a slope.
Wood Polymer Composite (WPC) has attracted a great deal of attention in environmental industries due to renewable resources, processability, excellent physical properties and logging regulations for application to housing units and engineering construction materials. In this study, commercial WPCs were prepared by using a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder. The effect of three main factors such as wood flour contents, coupling agent concentrations and pre-treatment of wood flour on the properties of WPCs was extensively investigated. It was found that tensile strength and thermal stability were decreased with increasing wood flour contents whereas the water absorption was increased. Addition of maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MA) into WPC exhibited better physical properties. On the contrary, the water absorption was slightly decreased with PP-g-MA. Finally the sample, which was prepared with pre-treated wood flour, represented the highest tensile strength. However, the water absorption of the sample was increased due to the transition of crystalline structure of cellulose.
A series of composite membranes based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES) were prepared via addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and solution casting method. The morphological structure, water uptake, proton conductivity of the resulting composite membranes were extensively investigated as function of the content of TEOS. By the sol-gel reaction, TEOS molecules were not completely converted to $SiO_2$ particles, but formed only oligomer-type. Also, EDS confirms that the resulting silicon dioxide was homogeneously distributed in the composite membranes. As the content of TEOS increased, the prepared membranes increased water uptake and proton conductivity at high temperature and low relative humidity condition. In particular, considerably high proton conductivity (0.015 S/cm) at $120^{\circ}C$ and 48%RH was demonstrated in the composite membrane containing 200% TEOS, which is 10 times greater than that of unmodified SPAES membrane. Also, the composite membranes were found to have enhanced thermal stability compared to the unmodified membrane.
