  • In this paper, a sensitivity analysis technique is presented for performing effective structural optimization of bus system. Design sensitivities are analyzed on natural frequency of bus substructures using super-element. Vibration modes of substructure, which large affect on the global vibration mode of bus B.I.W., are found through the sensitivity analysis using the chain rule. And design variables, which are determined from the sensitivity analysis, are changed through optimum design.

  • The pivoting composite wing is developed for the kit to be mounted on the external stores. The wing has a pivoting structure for the installation to an aircraft and high aspect ratio to increase lift drag ratio. The wing needs to be light and have sufficient strength and stiffness to satisfy structural design requirements. The wing is designed with carbon fiber composite and the structural parts are integrated to reduce cost to manufacture. In order to verify the structural performances, the design load analysis and flight load survey, the static analysis and test, the ground vibration test and flutter analysis are performed. It is shown that the wing has sufficient structural strength and stiffness to satisfy the structural design requirements.

  • This paper presents the vibration characteristics of scaffolding structures with a hoist according to payloads. In order to analyze the vibrational and structural characteristics for 20-step scaffolding structure, structural and vibrational characteristics for 2-step scaffolding structure were compared with some experimental results. The numerical results for natural frequencies of scaffolding structures have a good agreement with experimental ones. Through the numerical analysis, firstly, it is shown that the maximum stress of scaffolding structures is lower than von-mises yield criteria when four persons with total weight of 280kgf are working at the top of the scaffolding structures. Secondly vibration characteristics including natural frequencies and modes for scaffolding structures are shown in case of various kinds of moving masses.

  • A passenger ship has some differences compared with a general commercial ship from the viewpoint of the structural arrangement. It is difficult to reinforce wide panels and local structures of a passenger ship because of its interior design when they have vibration problems. Moreover, the allowable vibratory limit for a passenger ship is much lower than that of a commercial ship. In this study, it is introduced that the procedure of the vibration analysis and the structural improvement for prevention of vibration with consideration of interior design for the Atrium stairway, one of the local structure installed in public space.

  • A few intake stations have vibration problems caused by pumps, motors and pipes. The vibration transferred from pumps, motors and pipes excites building severely. Therefore, the crack is generated on building wall and people who work at intake station are damaged. In this paper, the vibration has been measured and analyzed for pumps, motors, pipes and building at intake station. Also, the cause of vibration is identified. Finally, the solution of structural vibration is established using the results of measurement.

  • Cylindrical steel tanks are important components of industrial facilities. Their safety becomes a crucial issue since any failure may cause catastrophic consequences. The aim of the paper is to show the results of comprehensive FEM numerical investigation focused on the response of cylindrical steel tanks under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes. The effects of different levels of liquid filling, the influence of non-uniform seismic excitation as well as the aspects of diagnosis of structural damage have been investigated. The results of the modal analysis indicate that the level of liquid filling is really essential in the structural analysis leading to considerable changes in the shapes of vibration modes with a substantial reduction in the natural frequencies when the level of liquid increases. The results of seismic and paraseismic analysis indicate that the filling the tank with liquid leads to the substantial increase in the structural response underground motions. It has also been observed that the peak structural response values under mining tremors and moderate earthquakes can be comparable to each other. Moreover, the consideration of spatial effects related to seismic wave propagation leads to a considerable decrease in the structural response under non-uniform seismic excitation. Finally, the analysis of damage diagnosis in steel tanks shows that different types of damage may induce changes in the free vibration modes and values of natural frequencies.

  • This study investigates structural and vibration analyses due to the change of bolt Numbers on models 1 and 2 of flange couplings connected with both sides of axis. As maximum equivalent stresses of models 1 and 2 are 122.05 and 102.3 MPa respectively by the basis of bolt, these stresses are within the allowable stress of this model and the safety of bolt design is verified. As maximum equivalent stresses of models 1 and 2 are 196.2 and 196.4 MPa respectively by the basis of body, these stresses are within the allowable stress of this model and the safety of body design is verified. Through natural frequency analysis, maximum displacements of model 1 and 2 are shown at the frequencies of 6565.1 and 6614.9 Hz respectively. Maximum displacements in cases of models 1 and 2 are shown at harmonic frequencies of 7760 and 7840 Hz at real loading conditions. By putting these study results together, the durability of vibration at model 2 with bolt numbers of 8 becomes better than model 1 with bolt numbers of 6. These study results can be effectively utilized with the design on flange coupling by anticipating and investigating prevention and durability against its damage.

  • In this study, dynamic boundary element method using mass matrix is derived, using fundamental solutions for the semi-infinite domain. In constituting boundary integral equations for the dynamic equilibrium condition, inertia term in the form of domain integral is transformed into boundary integral form. Corresponding system equations are derived, and a boundary element program is developed. In addition, equations for free vibration is formulated, and eigenvalue analysis is performed. The results from the dynamic boundary element analysis for a tunnel problem are compared with those from the finite element analysis. According to the comparison, boundary element method using mass matrix is consistent with the results of finite element method. Consequently, in tunnel vibration problems, it results in reasonable solution compared with other methods where relatively higher degree of freedoms are employed.

  • In this paper, a dynamic analysis of a helicopter landing gear with considering flexible structural modes has been investigated. The main body of the helicopter has been modeled as a flexible body using FEM code, then a few selected vibration modes of the helicopter main body have been used as basis for the dynamic analysis of the helicopter landing gear. The simulation of dynamic analysis was carried out on the base of ADAMS aircraft module. It has been found by a series of simulation that the flexible structural modes has a significant effect on the dynamic characteristics of helicopter landing gear as the flexibility of the main body is increased.

  • This paper aims to analyze the vibration characteristics of the test equipment that inspects any defects in manufactured semiconductor chips and classifies defective chips. This type of equipment should be robust against any vibrations because such vibrations can cause disruption in the process that requires higher precision. 3D model of the structure of the equipment has been used to configure vibration simulation model. Model analysis have been carried out to analyze which part of the equipment is weak against vibration. To minimize the vibration effect of the equipment, the thickness of the plate consist of the equipment and weights are modified. The results show that thicker plate and higher weight in the equipment can decrease vibration effect.
