  • The aircrafts with high aspect ratio wings made by a composite material have been developed, which enable high energy efficiency and long-term flight by reducing air resistance and structural weight. However, they have difficulties in securing the aeroelastic stability such as the flutter because of their long and flexible wings. The flutter is unstable self-excited-vibration caused by interaction between the structural dynamics and the aerodynamics. It should be verified analytically prior to first flight test that the flutter does not happen in the range of flight mission. Normally, the finite element model is used for the flutter analysis. So it is important to construct the finite element model representing dynamic characteristics similar to those of a real aircraft. Accordingly, in this research, to acquire dynamic characteristics experimentally the modal test of the aircraft with high aspect ratio composite wings was conducted. And then the modal parameters from the finite element analysis(FEA) were compared with those from the modal test. To make analysis results closer to test results, the finite element model was updated by means of the sensitivity analysis on variables and the optimization. Finally, it was proved that the updated finite element model is reliable as compared with the results of the modal test.

  • Development of high-strength and light-weight structural steel as well as advancement in steel structure analysis enable construction of long span steel arch bridge. In an economic viewpoint, however, the design values of long span steel arch bridge needs to be optimized to reduce construction cost and achieve proper levels of structural safety. This study investigated the girder depth and the rise-span ratio for optimum design values, as well as the spectral analysis for protection against earthquake. The relationship between rise-span ratio and girder depth was derived based on the parametric studies of the basic span lengths of 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100m using a commercial Cis SAP2000. The equation relating the two variables was derived using linear regression.

  • The main objective of the current research is estimating the flexural behavior of ferrocement Ribbed Plates reinforced with composite material. Experimental investigation was carried out on fifteen plates; their dimensions were kept constant at 1200 mm in length, 600 mm width and 100 mm thick but with different volume fraction of steel reinforcement and number of ribs. Test specimens were tested until failure under three line loadings with simply supported conditions over a span of 1100 mm. Cracking patterns, tensile and compressive strains, deformation characteristics, ductility ratio, and energy absorption properties were observed and measured at all stages of loadings. Experimental results were compared to analytical models using ANSYS 10 program. Parametric study is presented to look at the variables that can mainly affect the mechanical behaviors of the model such as the change of plate length. The results showed that the ultimate strength, ductility ratio and energy absorption properties of the proposed ribbed plates are affected by the volume fraction and the type of reinforcement, and also proved the effectiveness of expanded metal mesh and woven steel mesh in reinforcing the ribbed ferrocement plates. In addition, the developed ribbed ferrocement plates have high strength, ductility ratio and energy absorption properties and are lighter in weight compared to the conventional RC ribbed plates, which could be useful for developed and developing countries alike. The Finite Element (FE) simulations gave good results comparing with the experimental results.

  • In this paper, it is aimed to evaluate the earthquake angle influence on the seismic performance of steel highway bridges. Upper-deck steel highway bridge, which has arch type load bearing system with a total length of 216 m, has been selected as an application and analyzed using finite element methods. The bridge is subjected to 1992 Erzincan earthquake ground motion components in nineteen directions whose values range between 0 to 90 degrees, with an increment of 5 degrees. The seismic weight is calculated using full dead load plus 30% of live load. The variation of maximum displacements in each directions and internal forces such as axial forces, shear forces and bending moments for bridge arch and deck are attained to determine the earthquake angle influence on the seismic performance. The results show that angle of seismic input motion considerably influences the response of the bridge. It is seen that maximum arch displacements are obtained at X, Y and Z direction for $0^{\circ}$, $65^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$, respectively. The results are changed considerably with the different earthquake angle. The maximum differences are calculated as 57.06%, 114.4% and 55.71% for X, Y and Z directions, respectively. The maximum axial forces, shear forces and bending moments are obtained for bridge arch at $90^{\circ}$, $5^{\circ}$ and $0^{\circ}$, respectively. The maximum differences are calculated as 49.12%, 37.37% and 51.50%, respectively. The maximum shear forces and bending moments are obtained for bridge deck at $0^{\circ}$. The maximum differences are calculated as 49.67%, and 49.15%, respectively. It is seen from the study that the variation of earthquake angle effect the structural performance of highway bridges considerably. But, there is not any specific earthquake angle of incidence for each structures or members which increases the value of internal forces of all structural members together. Each member gets its maximum value of in a specific angle of incidence.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer plastic (FRP) structural members are recently available in construction industries due to various material properties such as high specific strength and stiffness, light-weight, and corrosionresistance. The floating PV generation structure can also be an illustration for applying FRP in construction applications. The floating PV generation structure has been recently issued as a representative item for the low carbon and green growth campaign and many related studies have been conducted for the structural safety and commercial viability. Moreover, the floating PV generation structures for the commercial purpose have been constructed. In this paper, the investigation and development processes of elements for the floating PV generation structure are presented during commercialization.

  • Recently, iron aluminides based on Fe3Al and FeAl are ordered intermetallic alloys that offer good oxidation resistance, excellent sulfidation resistance, and potentially lower cost than many high-temperature structural materials. They have better strength, elasticity to weight ratio and high temperature strength, therefore, they can be cosidered as candidate heat resistance structural materials for automobiles, ships, airplanes and spaceships applications. The changes in the mechanical properties and fracture behavior were investigated for Fe-30at.%Al-5at.%Cr alloys when Ti, Hf and Zr were added respectively. For mechanical properties such as Rockwell hardness and yield strength at room temperature, those were decreased in the case of Fe-30at.%Al-5at.%Cr alloy then increased in the case of 5at.% and 10at.% addition of Ti alone. However, Rockwell hardness and yield strength decreased again at 15%Ti then increased dramatically due to the precipitation hardening of the second phase on the specimen at 20%Ti. For fracture modes, cleavage fracture showed in the case of Fe-30at.%Al and Fe-30at.%Al-5at.%Cr alloys. As the amount of Ti addition changed cleavage to transgranular fracture and to quasi-cleavage fracture at 20%Ti. When Hf, Zr and Hf+Zr were added respectively, transgranular, cleavage and quasi-cleavage fracture were coexisted.

  • Spontaneous ignition is not only severe economic damage but also a typical plant damage caused by harmful gases generated during the fire. Because coal is porous, it causes oxygen to be absorbed in the amount of oxygen per unit weight of oxygen, resulting in low humidity and low thermal conductivity. The cause and effect of spontaneous ignition are very complex, so it is difficult to prevent it beforehand and once it is difficult to digest it, it is difficult to digest it. This study examines structural safety by conducting a structural analysis of the cooling ball system to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal stockpile plants and external pressures.

  • This study takes shear wall of reinforced concrete structure as study object, and the purpose of this study is to suggest structure BIM based on automatic reinforcing bar placement system applying set-based design through the most optimum reinforcing bar placement group that was selected by applying AHP (analytical hierarchy process) method from design step. For this, the most optimum reinforcing bar placement group was selected by pairwise comparison analysis on complex standard of multiple alternatives. And shear wall automatic reinforcing bar placement system has been developed, which can automatically generate members and arrange reinforcing bar by structure design algorithm and using open API (application programming interface) provided by a BIM software vendor. As a result, the most optimum reinforcing bar placement group of the highest weight, ALT1, was selected and was generated using Tekla Structure program.

  • Conventional PSC I type girders were adversely affected by the self - weight of concrete, anchorage, prestressing. In order to overcome this problem, PSC girder was constructed with a hollow in the web and developed a hollow web PSC type I girder which is applicable to 50 - 70m span by multistage stressing and then actually long span hollow web PSC girder bridge was constructed. In this study, the results of Static Load Test and the Finite Element Analysis of the hollow web PSC I girder bridges were compared and analyzed, and the Load Carrying Capacity and safety of PSC girder bridges were evaluated. The Static Load Test and the numerical analysis results of this bridge showed similar tendency and the behavior of the hollow web PSC I girder was well simulated. The entire girders of the bridges had sufficient Load Carrying Capacity under the live load design condition and the bridges satisfied the safety and confirmed the appropriateness of the construction.

  • The long-term flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with an iron based-shape memory alloys (Fe-SMAs) by a near-surface mounted (NSM) method was evaluated. The pre-strained values of 2% and 4% and introduced prestressing force by an activation of a shape memory effect of the Fe-SMA strengthening material were considered as experimental variables. Deflections at the center of the RC beams were measured for six months after the 1 tonf concrete weight was loaded on the beam. Experimental results show that the deflections decreased because of the increased flexural stiffness of beams strengthened with the Fe-SMA strips. On the contrary, with increased pre-strained values, the deflection increased due to stiffness reduction of the strengthening material. It was confirmed that the specimens incorporating the prestressed force showed the deflection reduction of about 30%, compared to the ones without the prestressed force.
