  • Structural light weight aggregate concrete are made with both coarse and fine light weight aggregates, but it is common with the high strength concrete to replace all or part with normal weight sand be called class 1 structural light weight aggregate concrete. Fire resistance of structural light weight aggregate concrete are determined by properties of high water content ratio and explosive spalling. Especially, structural light weight aggregate concrete is occurred serious fire performance deterioration by explosive spalling stem from thermal stress and water vapor pressure. This study is concerned with experimentally investigating fire resistance of class 1 structural light weight concrete. From the test result, class 1 structural light weight concrete is happened explosive spalling. The decrease of cross section caused by explosive spalling made sharp increasing gradient of inner temperature.

  • A method of weight evaluation of the load-bearing structural elements of cars is presented and the weight ratio of the analysis model is investigated. Replacing the materials of floor elements of the car into the high-strength steel, a considerable weight-reduction of the model has been obtained. The 1500cc model is selected for the present study and the stick model analysis is employed for the structural analysis. The torsional stiffness of the weight-reduced model is also evaluated and it is shown it has a reasonable rigidity. The ratio of the weight of the load-bearing structural elements to the unladen vehicle weight of cars is about 0.12for the 1500cc model and the weight-reduction of this study can be obtained around 17% of the weight of the load-bearing structural elements.

  • Due to the global environment problems and the consumer's need for higher vehicle performance, it becomes very important for the global car makers to reduce vehicle weight. To reduce vehicle weight, many car makers have tried to use lightweight materials, for example, aluminum, magnesium, and plastics, for the vehicle structures and components. Especially, the ASF(aluminum space frame) is known for the excellent concept of the vehicle to satisfy structural rigidity, safety performance and weight reduction. In this research, the design of experiments and the multi-disciplinary optimization technique were utilized to meet the weight and structural rigidity target of the ASF. For the structural performance of the ASF, the locations and the size of aluminum extruded frames, aluminum cast nodes, and the aluminum sheets were optimized. As a result, the optimization design procedure has been set up to meet both structural and weight target of the ASF, and the assembled ASF showed good structural performance and weight reduction.

  • Test methods by hydraulic oil or vehicular live load have been used for structural evaluation of prototype bridge. However it has been reported that the use of hydraulic jack has some disadvantages for the view of safety and economy, and the complete structural evaluation through each loading state can not be accomplished blocks is presented to overcome those demerits. To verify the application and safely of the use of concrete weight blocks during each loading state, it is applied to prototype deteriorated bridge. As a result, it could be evaluated the structural behavior completely using the concrete weight blocks

  • The optimum weight design of structure is to determine the combination of structural members which minimize the weight of structures and satisfy design conditions as well. Since most of loads and design variables considered in structural design have uncertain natures, the reliability-based optimization techniques need to be developed. The aim of this study is to estabilish the general algorithm for the minimum weight design of transmission tower structure system with reliability constraints. The sequential linear programming method is used to solve non-linear minimization problems, which converts original non-linear programming problems to sequential linear programming problems. The optimal solutions are produced for various reliability levels such as reliability levels inherent in current standard transmission tower cross-section and optimal transmission tower cross-section obtained with constraints of current design criteria as well as selected target reliability index. The optimal transmission towers satisfying reliability constraints sustain consistent reliability levels on all members. Consequently, more balanced optimum designs are accomplished with less structural weight than traditional designs dealing with deterministic design criteria.

  • In the drift design of high-rise buildings, once the geometry and dimensions of a structure are predetermined, engineer's remaining work is determination of the member size to satisfy the strength and the stiffness requirements. For the case of highrise buildings, designs are determined by the stiffness requirements at the final stage of structural design. Thus, engineers try to find a minimum weight design with maximum lateral stiffness. However, there is no guideline for engineers on the required weight of structures per unit area to satisfy the stiffness requirements. In this study, drift design method considering weight modification factors are presented and applied to a 20-story structure. The proposed drift design method considering weight modification factors may give the guideline for engineers on the amount of structural weight to attain target displacement.

  • Human Powered Aircraft (HPA) should be light in weight and have high efficiency because power source of propulsion is human muscles. Airframe structure takes up most of empty weight of aircraft, so weight reduction of structure is very important issue for HPA. In this paper, design/analysis/test procedures for ultra light weight structure of the HPA developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) are explained briefly. Structural design is conducted through case studies on HPA in the USA and Japan. Loads analysis is performed to calculate design loads which is needed for structural design and analysis. Structural analysis is conducted for structure sizing. Static strength test of main wing spar which is primary structure of wing is performed to verify structural integrity.

  • This study proposed a specific preliminary structural design procedure of the main wing for a small scale WIG vehicle to meet the target weight of the system requirement. The high stiffness and strength Carbon-Epoxy material was used for lightness, and the foam sandwich type structure at the upper skin and the spar webs was adopted for improvement of structural stability. After structural design, wing joint part was designed. Through investigation on structural design result, design modification was performed. After design modification, even thought the designed wing weight was a little bit heavier than the target wing weight, the structural safety and stability of the final design feature was confirmed.

  • H-CSR(Harmonized Common Structural Rules) integrating CSR-BC(Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers) and CSR-OT(Common Structural Rules for Double Hull Oil Tankers) came into effect in July of 2015, so that bulk carrier and double hull oil tanker should comply with this rules. So far, several studies for trend analysis of requirements of structure scantling based on H-CSR have been carried out briskly. However, those studies are rare to apply H-CSR in actual structural design of ships, especially bulk carriers. In this study, an automated system for compartment arrangement is used to search the design case that minimizes still water bending moment(S.W.B.M) in 38k bulk carrier designed by Far East Ship Design & Engineering Co. Ltd. Also, various structural design cases are considered by changing arrangement of structural members to reduce ship weight. The SeaTrust-Hullscan software developed by Korean Register is used to perform structural design of ships based on mother ship and proper design cases are selected by user. The DSA(Direct Strength Analysis) is performed to evaluate structural safety for the yielding and buckling analysis by using MSC Nastran software. The effect of weight reduction is verified by comparison of ship weight between mother ship and the selected design cases.
