  • Transfer RNA (tRNA) is a key molecule to decode the genetic information on mRNA to amino aicds (protein), in a ribosome. For tRNA to fulfill its adopter function, tRNA should be processed into the standard length, and be post-transcriptionally modified. This modification step is essential for the tRNA to maintain the canonical L-shaped structure, which is required for the decoding function of tRNA. Otherwise, it has recently been proposed that modification procedure itself contributes to the RNA (re)folding, where the modification enzymes function as a kind of RNA chaperones. Recent genome analyses and post-genome (proteomics and transcriptomics) analyses have identified genes involved in the tRNA processings and modifications. Furthermore, post-genomic structural analysis has elucidated the structural basis for the tRNA maturation mechanism. In this paper, the recent progress of the structural biology of the tRNA processing and modification is reviewed.

  • Although intensive development continues on innovative sensor systems, there is still considerable uncertainty in deciding on the number of sensors required and their locations in order to obtain adequate information on structural behavior. This paper is concerned with the sensor locations on a beam-structure for prognostic structural health monitoring. The purpose of this study is to investigate how to determine optimal sensor placement(OSP) from the sensitivity information of a known failure mode. The sensitivity of the forced vibration response of a beam to the variation of stiffness due to a crack is calculated analytically and used to determine the optimal sensor locations for the specified failure mode. The results of this method compared with the results of different OSP methods. The results have shown that the proposed method on optimal sensor placement is very effective in structural health monitoring.

  • This paper describes the structural analysis result of accident EMU(Electric Multiple Units). Structural analysis of EMU was performed for the criteria of safety assessment. Structural analysis using commercial I-DEAS software provided important information on the stress distribution and load transfer mechanisms as well as the amount of damages during rolling stock crash. Tensile tests were performed on two different types of specimens in order to evaluate the strength changes before and after damages, obtained from plastic deformed area and nondeformed region of the accident EMU. The structural analysis and tensile test results have been used to provide the critical information for the criteria of safety assessment.

  • An integrated design system has as its aim the incoporation of all the design processes, such as, planning, preliminary design, analysis, detailed design (mamber design), evaluation, and drafting into an unified software system. Successful implementation such a system could lead to major improvements in efficiency by eliminating duplication of data and efforts. reducing errors, saving design time, providing management support, and so on. This study presents a methodology for an computer-integrated design system for building structures, synthesizing algorithmic procedures and knowledge based expert systems on the network database. Network database, which was designed to store all information systematically during the design processes, provides centeral communication area between algorithms and expert systems. The conventional procedural codes automate the routine design phases such as structural analysis, whereas knowledge-based expert systems support designer's decisions at the creative design phases such as preliminary design etc. The user interface with interactive and batch modes controls the design phases and manages design information and activates the algorithms and the expert systems. The concept presented in this paper will contribute to the formulation of automated design systems for building structures.

  • Proper pretest planning is a vital component of any successful vibration test on engineering structures. The most important issue in dynamic testing of many engineering structures is arriving at the number and optimal placement of sensors. The sensors must be placed on the structure in such a way that all the important dynamic behaviour of a structural system is captured during the course of the test with sufficient accuracy so that the information can be effectively utilised for structural parameter identification or health monitoring. Several optimal sensor placement (OSP) techniques are proposed in the literature and each of these methods have been evaluated with respect to a specific problem encountered in various engineering disciplines like aerospace, civil, mechanical engineering, etc. In the present work, we propose to perform a detailed characteristic evaluation of some selective popular OSP techniques with respect to their application to practical civil engineering problems. Numerical experiments carried out in the paper on various practical civil engineering structures indicate that effective independence (EFI) method is more consistent when compared to all other sensor placement techniques.

  • In construction of RC buildings, the quality of shop and detail drawings is very essential for the quality and safety of buildings. Nevertheless, most of thess works are left to site workers and the requirements about bar detailing such as anchorage and splice have been done without rational design and engineering. The purpose of this research is to develop a computer-aided drawing system of rebars for RC buildings. The system is based on an integrated structural design system, that is SDP. SDP manages an engineering database for structural design information. It provides all the information needed to draw rebar drawings. The drawing system consists of three modules, 1) Structual Plan Drawing System, 2) Shop Drawing System, and 3) Detail Drawing System. It is expected that not only the productivity of detail drawing works but also the quality and safety of buildings will be improved using the rebar drawing system developed in this research.

  • The tribological behavior of microsystems needs to be clearly understood in order to improve the reliability of precision components. For example, friction and wear phenomena pose serious problems in MEMS applications. As a first step to investigate the tribological behavior of such systems, an appropriate testing system must be acquired. In this work, a micro-wear tester based MEMS platform was designed. The main concern was to achieve a desirable range of horizontal displacement for the specimen holder and also to apply a normal force in the tens of ${\mu}N$ range. The structural analysis of the micro-wear tester showed that the proposed design satisfied these requirements while maintaining the structural integrity.

  • This study serves as a part for the development of an integrated structural design system. Efficient data management is essential in engineering computer applications where the volume of data is large and the data flow and sharing are required. From a viewpoint of computer application, building structures can be considered to be a mass ofdata. The centralized database(CDB) and database management system frees the application from the details of managing data storage and retrieval while providing a common pool of information. For this, systematic information analysis and modeling have to be preceded. In this paper we described the result of database modeling of building structure.

  • SNOMED CT browser is a search browser which searches and browses terminologies include in SNOMED CT. These terminologies shows a structural form using a variety of relationships. However, previous browsers merely lists up substring-matched search results, rather than using structural characteristics. This paper proposes and implements a browser system which shows a sub-graph of search results enabling structural search of the results. The implementation includes searching of terminologies based on substring-matching, tree-based graphical organization of the search results, and history of concept views.
