The Treatment Effect of Neurofeedback Training on Executive Function in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (뉴로피드백 훈련이 Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder 아동의 실행기능에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : Children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been shown to display more inhibitory deficits and executive function deficits. This study investigated the treatment effects of neurofeedback (NF) training on executive function by comparing the results of neuropsychological tests of the trained children at pre- and post-training. Methods : Fifteen children with ADHD, aged 6 to 14 years, participated in the study. The NF treatment consisted of slow cortical potential (SCP) training and these sessions took place once a week. The ADHD children performed 20 sessions of NF training within 6 months. Pre-training and post-training assessments encompassed Continuous Performance Test (CPT), Stroop Test, Children's Color Trails Test I&II (CCTT) and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST). Results : Patients receiving NF training showed significant improvement in visual commission error and standard deviation of auditory response time on CPT ; and total errors on WCST. But there was no significant improvement in the Stroop test and CCTT. Conclusion : SCP training using NF improves the self-regulatory capacities and impulsivity in ADHD patient, especially impulsivity in visual stimulation tasks. This study showed evidence of clinical efficacy of NF on executive function in ADHD.

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Effects of Simultaneous Dual-Task Training on Executive Function in Older Adults (동시적 이중과제 훈련이 노인의 실행기능에 미치는 효과: 체계적 고찰 및 메타분석)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of simultaneous dual-task training to assess executive function in older adults. Methods : We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and RISS databases of publicated studies in the past decade. Seven studies were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Qualitative assessment and meta-analysis were performed for the seven studies. Results : A randomized controlled trial design was used in the selected studies, and PEDro Scores above seven were obtained. The Trial Making Test (TMT) evaluated the effects of dual-task training on executive function in four studies. The Color Trail Test (CTT) was used in two studies, and Stroop test was used in three studies. The effect size for total executive function was 0.38, which was small. The effect sizes for TMT and CTT were 0.37. Stroop Test was 0.34, demonstrating that their effect sizes were also small. Only significant effects in total executive function, TMT, and CTT showed significant effects (all p<0.05). Conclusion : This study confirmed that dual-task training was effective in improving executive function in older adults. To improve the effectiveness of dual-task training, the difficulty of the dual-task training should be considered. It is also necessary to implement assessments that can evaluate performance under dual-task conditions as well as conventional test tools for executive function. In the future, dual-task training could be used as an appropriate intervention for executive function in older adults to delay the onset of dementia.

Association between BDNF and Antidepressant Effects of Exercise in Youth: A Preliminary Study (아동청소년에서 운동의 항우울 효과와 BDNF와의 관련성에 대한 예비 연구)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate anti-depressive effects of exercise on child and adolescent and its association with brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Methods: Twenty nine middle school boys (age $13.3{\pm}0.7$) were divided into two groups, 15 boys for control group and 14 in the experimental group. The control group participated in a regular exercise program, 3 times a week for 15 weeks. During the same period, the experimental group participated in an aerobic exercise program specifically designed to enhance anti-depressive effect of exercise. Serum BDNF level and its performance of each group on the Beck Depression Index (BDI), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), Aggression Questionnaire (AK-Q), and Stroop task were compared before and after the exercise program. Results: Scores of BDI, CDI, SCARED, and AK-Q were significantly lower in both groups after the exercise programs compared to those before the programs. The Stroop task performances were significantly improved after the programs. However, there were no significant differences between two exercise programs, except SCARED separation anxiety, AK-Q physical, and verbal aggression scores. Also, no association was found between serum BDNF level and anti-depressive effects of exercise. Conclusion: Our preliminary results suggest a possible effect of exercise on depression, anxiety, aggression, and cognition of child and adolescents.

The effect of Neurofeedback training on brain wave activity and cognitive performance in chronic stroke patients (뉴로피드백(Neurofeedback) 훈련이 만성 뇌졸중 환자의 뇌파활성도와 인지수행력에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was done objected to the chronic stroke patients in order to evaluate change in brain wave activity and cognitive performance when Neurofeedback training. The subjects were over 6 months ago in chronic stroke patients screened-test through the 20 patients, 10 persons in each group were randomly placed. This was carried out in 4 weeks in total, with control group(n=10) on general physical therapy and experimental group(n=10) on general physical therapy along with Neurofeedback training. The general physical therapy was applied 5 times a week, 30 minutes at once, Neurofeedback training was applied as equally as the general physical therapy, which makes 20 times in total. To learn about the effect before the training, after training, and 2 weeks after the training in electric physiological measurement method of the brain, electroencephalogram(EEG) to examine challenges by calculating the absolute spectrum power for standard EEG change(%), followed by evaluation with clinical assessment tool MMSE-K, Stroop Test, Digit Span Test. As a result of comparing the change in brain wave through EEG, after training and 2 weeks after training showed that absolute ${\alpha}$-power and absolute ${\beta}$-SMR power of experimental group have increased and absolute ${\theta}$-power decreased significantly compared to experimental group I. Moreover, the MMSE-K score in trial appraisal has increased significantly, and the error in Stroop Test and Digit Span Test has decreased significantly. such results, with the chronic stroke patient's brain wave control, Neurofeedback training was determined to improve the cognitive performance. this study suggests a new training possibility of stroke patients by identifying the training effects of Neurofeedback training that trains the brain directly with brain wave control.

Affective Priming Effect on Cognitive Processes Reflected by Event-related Potentials (ERP로 확인되는 인지정보 처리에 대한 정서 점화효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate whether Stroop-related cognitive task will be affected according to the preceding affective valence factored by matchedness in response time(RT) and whether facial recognition will be indexed by specific event-related potentials(ERPs) signature in normal person as in patients suffering from affective disorder. ERPs primed by subliminal(30ms) facial stimuli were recorded when presented with four pairs of affect(positive or negative) and cognitive task(matched or mismatched) to get ERP effects(N2 and P300) in terms of its amplitude and peak latency variations. Behavioral response analysis based on RTs confirmed that subliminal affective stimuli primed the target processing in all affective condition except for the neutral stimulus. Additional results for the ERPs performed in the negative affect with mismatched condition reached significance of emotional-face specificity named N2 showing more amplitude and delayed peak latency compared to the positive counterpart. Furthermore the condition shows more positive amplitude and earlier peak latency of P300 effect denoting cognitive closure than the corresponding positive affect condition. These results are suggested to reflect that negative affect stimulus in subliminal level is automatically inhibited such that this effect had influence on accelerating detection of the affect and facilitating response allowing adequate reallocation of attentional resources. The functional and cognitive significance with these findings was implied in terms of subliminal effect and affect-related recognition modulating the cognitive tasks.

The Role of Script Type in Janpanese Word Recognition:A Connectionist Model (일본어의 단어인지과정에서 표기형태의 역할:연결주의 모형)

  • The present paper reviews experimental finding such as kanji stroop effect, kana superiority effect in naming task, kanji superiority effect in lexical devision task, and the different pattern of facilitatory priming effect in repetition priming task. Most of the experimental findings indicate that kana script and kanji script are processed independently and modularly. These indications are also consistent with the basic observations on Japanese dyslexics. A connectionist model named JIA(Japanese Interactive Activation)is proposed which is a revision of interactive activation model proposed by McClelland & Rumelhart(1981). The differences between the two models are as follows. Firstly, JIA has a kana module and kanji module at letter level. Secondly, JIA adopts script-specific interconnections between letter-level nodes and word-level nodes:word nodes receive larger activation from the script consistent letter-level nodes. JIA successfully explains all the experimental findings and many cases of Japanese dyslexia. A computer program which simulates JIA model was written and run.

The Relationship of False Belief and Inhibitory Control Skill in 3-and 4-Year-Old Children (아동의 억제 조절 기술과 헛믿음 과제 수행과의 관련성)

  • The subjects were individually presented with the Maxi-doll task to examine false belief and with the flower-star (Stroop-like day-night) test to examine inhibitory control skill. In the $1^{st}$ session, the subjects were tested with both the Maxi tesk and the flower-star test. Three days later, subjects were retested with the Maxi task, including an inhibitory cue. Data were analyzed by 3-way ANOVA, age(2) $\times$ inhibitory level(2) $\times$ task type(Maxi-task or Maxi-including cue). All the main effects were significant and the interaction effect between inhibitory level and task type was also significant. Thus, their understanding of the mind and inhibitory control skill both influence children's performance on a typical false belief task.

Neurocognitive Characteristics According to Depression Severity in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder (주요우울장애 환자의 증상 심각도에 따른 신경인지적 특성)

  • Objectives This study investigated associations between symptom severity and neurocognitive functions in patients with major depressive disorder using comprehensive neuropsychological tests. Methods Ten patients with low depression (LD) and 22 patients with high depression (HD) participated. Symptom severity was determined by both the Beck Depression Inventory and the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Additionally, anxiety was measured by the Korean version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-KYZ). Ten subtests of the Korean-Wechsler Adult Intelligence scale (K-WAIS), Stroop test, the word/design fluency tests were administered to assess cognition. Results The LD and HD groups did not differ in any of cognitive measures but anxiety level. Namely, the HD group obtained significantly higher scores on the state (U = 29.50, p < 0.01) and trait (U = 28.50, p < 0.001) anxiety scales than the LD group. A significant interaction effect between trait anxiety and depression severity was observed on the picture arrangement subtest of the K-WAIS [F (1, 27) = 5.09, p < 0.05]. Conclusions Cognitive deficits observed in patients with major depressive disorder may be related to other factors rather than current symptom severity. Trait anxiety possibly moderates the effect of current symptom severity on social judgment in these patients.

NORMOBARIC OXYGEN($O_2$) ADMINISTRATION EFFECT ON ATTENTION AND MEMORY FUNCTION IN TEENAGE ADOLESCENTS (10대 청소년의 주의력과 기억능력에 미치는 정상기압 산소흡입 효과)

  • Objectives:This study was conducted to investigate the effect of oxygen on attention and memory functions in healthy adolescents. Methods:The participant subjects were recruited from local advertisement. All subjects are students attending ordinary middle and high school. Their degree of achievement was average or below average. Before the study, its nature and purpose were fully explained to the patients and their parents, and a written informed consent was obtained from each child's parent and a written assent from each child for entire the procedure. The Ethics Committee and Clinical Research Committee of Gyeongsang National University Hospital approved the protocol. For baseline assessment, all subjects received tests for attention and memory. All tests were conducted by a certified psychologist. Stroop test, continuous performance test and trail making test A and B were used for evaluation of attention. As memory tests, we used memory assessment scale(MAS), standardized memory assessment tools. Ten to fourteen days after initial assessments, same tests was applied to the same subjects after prior 5 minute oxygen inhalation. Results:1) Attention test:Improved performances in trail making part B, and stroop test were found in normobaric oxygen inhalation group compared to air inhalation group. Improved reaction time in those tests seemed to reflect the enhanced executive prefrontal activity. 2) Memory test:More words and digits memorization were found in short-term memory subscale score in MAS in oxygen inhalation group compared to air inhalation group. This finding suggested the improved working memory function after oxygen inhalation. Conclusion:Though interpreted cautiously, these results suggested that normobaric oxygen inhalation could enhance executive function and working memory of prefrontal lobe. Further study, however, should be performed to investigate the mechanism of effects of oxygen on cognitive enhancement.

  • 감미료는 감각을 만족시키는 기능을 가지며, 에너지를 공급하는 영양적 감미료와 에너지를 공급하지 않는 비 영양적 감미료로 분류 될 수 있다. 영양적 감미료들은(설탕, 과당 등) 미국 식약청에서는 일반적으로 안전하다고 인식(generally recognized as safe, GRAS) 되고 있다. 그러나 감미료 섭취는 적절한 영양섭취와 건강과 관련하여 아직 많은 우려를 가지고 있다. 첨가당으로부터의 에너지 섭취가 총 에너지 섭취의 25% 이상이면 식사의 질(quality)이 낮아진다. 지난 수 십 년 간, 당 섭취가 행동적인 면에 부정적으로 작용한다는 많은 이론들이 대두되었다. 그러나 포도당은 뇌의 주요 에너지원이다. 포도당의 기억력 향상기능은 모든 연령에서 보고되었으며, 특히 젊은 층보다는 노인에서 더 효과적이었다. 특히 적당량으로 섭취하였을 때 포도당의 섭취는 단어기억, 이야기 기억, 24시간 전에 학습한 정보에 대한 기억, 경계(vigilance)의 향상, 반응시간의 단축, 정신적 계산 능력의 향상, 시뮬레이터 조절에서의 실수감소, 스투르프효과(Stroop effect)의 감소, 지능검사의 향상, 실제사건에 대한 기억력 검사와 웩슬러 척도(Wechsler Scale)에서의 향상과 같은 여러 인지능력 검사에서 좋은 영향을 미친다고 한다. 포도당 용액과 간식의 섭취는 기억력을 개선한다. 아침식사를 거르는 것은 아동들에서 낮은 학습능력을 보인다. 인지능력 변화와 관련 있는 식이는 뇌에 포도당을 공급하는 것과 관련 있다. 과당도 동물실험에서 기억력을 향상시키는 기능이 있다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 본 논문은 당 섭취가 인지능력에 미치는 영향에 대한 과학적인 연구들을 종합하여 정리한 것이다.
