  • This paper proposed a recognition method of english calling card using both 4-directed contour tracking algorithm and enhanced ART1 algorithm. After we extract candidate character string region using horizontal smearing and 4-directed contour tracking method, we extract character string region through comparison of character region and non-character region using horizontal and vertical ratio and area in english calling card. In extracted character string region, we extract each character using horizontal smearing and contour tracking algorithm, and recognize each character by enhanced ART1 algorithm. The proposed ART1 algorithm is enhanced by dynamic control of similarity using fuzzy sum connective operator. The result indicate that the proposed method is superior in performance.

  • RNA analysis has become a reliable method of body fluid identification for forensic use. Previously, we developed a combination of four multiplex quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) probes to discriminate four different body fluids (blood, semen, saliva, and vaginal secretion). While those makers successfully identified most body fluid samples, there were some cases of false positive and negative identification. To improve the accuracy of the identification further, we tried to use multiple markers per body fluid and adopted the NanoString nCounter system instead of a multiplex qRT-PCR system. After measuring tens of RNA markers, we evaluated the accuracy of each marker for body fluid identification. For body fluids, such as blood and semen, each body fluid-specific marker was accurate enough for perfect identification. However, for saliva and vaginal secretion, no single marker was perfect. Thus, we designed a logistic regression model with multiple markers for saliva and vaginal secretion and achieved almost perfect identification. In conclusion, the NanoString nCounter is an efficient platform for measuring multiple RNA markers per body fluid and will be useful for forensic RNA analysis.

  • DNA sequences are the fundamental information for each species and a comparison between DNA sequences of different species is an important task. Since DNA sequences are very long and there exist many species, not only fast matching but also efficient storage is an important factor for DNA sequences. Thus, a fast string matching method suitable for encoded DNA sequences is needed. In this paper, we present a fast string matching method for encoded DNA sequences which does not decode DNA sequences while matching. We use four-characters-to-one-byte encoding and combine a suffix approach and a multi-pattern matching approach. Experimental results show that our method is about 5 times faster than AGREP and the fastest among known algorithms.

  • String data containing wildcard characters may represent certain patterns in texts. A subsumption relation between two patterns can be defined by a subset relation between sets of strings that match those patterns. Thus, the subsumption relation check is important to determine whether each pattern represents a set of strings without any overlap with another pattern. In this paper, we propose an effective algorithm that can determine subsumption relation between strings with wildcard characters. First, we consider a simple extension of the suffix tree algorithm so that it nay include wildcard characters and then we propose another method that checks the subsumption relation by dividing a suffix tree structure at each location of string data.

  • In this paper, a buck-flyback (fly-buck) stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system for charge balancing with a differential power processor (DPP) circuit is proposed. Conventional feed-back DPP converters draw differential feed-back power from the output of a string converter. Therefore, the power is always through the switches and diodes of the string converter. Because of the returning conduction path, there are always power losses due to the resistance of the switch and the forward voltage of the diode. Meanwhile, the proposed feed-back DPP converter draws power from the magnetically-coupled inductor in a string converter. This shortens the power path of the DPP converter, which reduces the power losses. In addition, the extra winding in the magnetically-coupled inductor works as a charge balancer for battery-stacked stand-alone PV systems. The proposed system, which uses a single magnetically-coupled inductor, can control each of the PV modules independently to track the maximum power point. Thus, it can overcome the power loss due to the power path. It can also achieve charge balancing for each of the battery modules. The proposed topology is analyzed and verified using 120W hardware experiments.

  • Background We report the efficacy of a dual-plane approach using a Dufourmentel skin flap with a purse-string suture of the de-epithelized dermis to manage pseudoaneurysm at the vascular access site for hemodialysis. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted of 61 patients from 2013 to 2018 with pseudoaneurysms at the arteriovenous fistula or graft who were treated with rhomboid excision, vessel repair with a purse-string suture, and a full-thickness Dufourmentel skin flap. The success rate was defined as the probability of complete wound closure and intact vascular access patency without infection or other complications. Results The success rate was 93.4% at 6 months postoperatively. Complications included newly occurring pseudoaneurysms (n=2), wound dehiscence (n=1) and bleeding (n=1). There were no complications such as stenosis or thrombosis from the procedure. Conclusions A dual-plane approach using a Dufourmentel skin flap with a purse-string suture for vessel repair was shown to be a favorable option for managing stable, small (diameter <2 cm) pseudoaneurysms without infection, rapid expansion, or patency issues of the vascular access.

  • Localized heat can be generated using electrically conductive word-lines built into a 3D NAND flash memory string. The heat anneals the gate dielectric layer and improves the endurance and retention characteristics of memory cells. However, even though the electro-thermal annealing can improve the memory operation, studies to investigate material failures resulting from electro-thermal stress have not been reported yet. In this context, this paper investigated how applying electro-thermal annealing of 3D NAND affected mechanical stability. Hot-spots, which are expected to be mechanically damaged during the electro-thermal annealing, can be determined based on understanding material characteristics such as thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. Finally, several guidelines for improving mechanical stability are provided in terms of bias configuration as well as alternative materials.

  • A Suffix Tree is an efficient data structure that exposes the internal structure of a string and allows efficient solutions to a wide range of complex string problems, in particular, in the area of computational biology. However, as the biological information explodes, it is impossible to construct the suffix trees in main memory. We should find an efficient technique to construct the trees in a secondary storage. In this paper, we present a method for constructing a suffix tree in a disk for large set of DNA strings using new index scheme. We also show a typical application example with a suffix tree in the disk.

  • Complete resection of an apicoposterior mediastinal mass is essential due to the mass effect, which exerts pressure on adjacent organs. Recently, the use of minimally invasive surgery has had many advantages. In this report, we describe a case in which a large apicoposterior mediastinal hypervascular mass was managed using a purse-string suture technique during robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS). The patient, a 77-year-old woman, was diagnosed with a 6.2-cm apicoposterior mediastinal hypervascular solid mass originating from the branches of the right subclavian artery. The patient underwent RATS for treatment. To obtain an adequate view of the apex of the thoracic cavity, a needle aspiration was performed, followed by the application of a purse-string suture technique. This was done to reduce the size of the tumor and to prevent catastrophic events such as seeding or spillage of the cystic mass. The mass was histopathologically diagnosed as a schwannoma. The patient was discharged on the first postoperative day without experiencing any complications.
