  • In the present study, flow characteristics of turbulent pulsating flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct were experimentally investigated. Experimental studies for air flows were conducted to measure axial velocity and wall shear stress distributions and entrance length in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct by using the LDV with the data acquisition and the processing system. The experiment was conducted in seven sections from the inlet (${\phi}=0^{\circ}$) to the outlet (${\phi}=180^{\circ}$) at $30^{\circ}$ intervals of the duct. The results obtained from the experimentation were summarized as follows ; (1) When the ratio of velocity amplitude ($A_1$) was less than one, there was hardly any velocity change in the section except near the wall and any change in axial velocity distributions along the phase. When the ratio of velocity amplitude ($A_1$) was 0.6, the change rate of velocity was slow. (2) Wall shear stress distributions of turbulent pulsating flow were similar to those of turbulent steady flow. The value of the wall shear stress became minimum in the inner wall aid gradually increased toward the outer wall where it became maximum. (3) The entrance length of turbulent pulsating flow reached near the region of bend angle of $90^{\circ}$, like that of turbulent steady flow. The entrance length was changed by the dimensionless angular frequency (${\omega}^+$).

  • In this paper, the stress and transient currents associated with the on and off time of applied voltage were used to measure the density and distribution of high voltage stress induced traps in thin silicon oxide films. The transient currents were due to the discharging of traps generated by high stress voltage in the silicon oxides. The trap distributions were relatively uniform near both cathode and anode interface. The trap densities were dependent on the stress polarity. The stress generated trap distributions were relatively uniform the order of $10^{11}\sim10^{21}$[states/eV/$cm^2$] after a stress. The trap densities at the oxide silicon interface after high stress voltages were in the $10^{10}\sim10^{13}$[states/eV/$cm^2$]. It appear that the stress and transient current that flowed when the stress voltage were applied to the oxide was caused by carriers tunneling through the silicon oxide by the high voltage stress generated traps.

  • A comprehensive review of through thickness transverse residual stress distributions in a range of as-welded and mechanically bent components made up of a range of steels has been carried out, and simplified generic transverse residual stress profiles for a plate and pipe components have been proposed. The geometries consisted of welded pipe butt joints, T-plate joints, tubular T-joints, tubular Y-joints and a pipe on plate joints as well as cold bent tubes and pipes. The collected data covered a range of engineering steels including ferritic, austenitic, C-Mn and Cr-Mo steels. Measured residual stress data, normalised with respect to the parent material yield stress, has shown a good linear correlation versus the normalised depth of the region containing the residual stress resulting from the welding or cold-bending process. The proposed simplified generic residual stress profiles based on the mean statistical linear fit of all the data provides a reasonably conservative prediction of the stress intensity factors. Whereas the profiles for the assessment procedures are fixed and case specific, the simple bilinear profiles for the residual stresses obtained by shifting the mean and bending stress from the mean regression line have been proposed and validated.

  • Residual stress in the forged products directly affects material stability, resistance to deformation, accuracy, and fatigue life of products. It is very important to study the residual stress distributions in forged products and to monitor operating conditions for the minimum tensile or maximum compressive residual stresses. As a way to study the residual stress formation due to radial forging, a three dimensional theoretical model was developed using ANSYS finite element program. Using the developed model, residual stress distributions in forged product were calculated and selected results were compared with the published experimental data to verify the effectiveness of the developed model.

  • Based on the principle of complementary energy, an analytical method is developed which focused on the end effects for determining thermal stress distributions in the clad beam. This method gives the stress distributions which completely satisfy the stress-free boundary condition at the edge. Numerical results shows that shear and peeling stress at the interface between the substrate and clad are significant near the edge and become negligible in the interior region. Even thought the relative location where the maximum or minimum stresses take place moves to interior as the length of the beam becomes smaller, the absolute location from the free end and the value of these stresses are the same in spite of the variation of the length of beam.

  • A penalty finite element method has been developed for accurately predicting stress distributions at the tool-workpiece interfaces. The basic formulation is described, with the emphasis on the algorithm to deal with the normal stress and the frictional stress at the interface. Comparison with the experimental data and the theoretical solutions found in the literature is made for the forming processes selected.

  • Based on the principle of complementary energy, an analytical method is developed which focuses on the end effects for determining thermal stress distributions in a three-layered beam. This method gives the stress distributions which completely satisfy the stress-free boundary conditions. A numerical example is given in order to verify this method. The results show that the present analytical solutions have the values of stress in excellent agreement with the solutions derived by other investigators. Using this method, the effects of the thickness of bond coat on the thermal stresses of a typical sprayed thermal barrier coating, which consists of IN738LC substrate, MCrAIY bond coat and ZrO$_2$-8wt%Y$_2$O$_3$top coat, were investigated.

  • In this paper, we adopted a two-dimensional analytical electro-elastic model to predict the stress distributions of the piezoelectric actuator in 3D case. The actuator was embedded in an elastic host structure under electrical loadings. The problem is reduced to the solution of singular integral equations of the first kind. The interfacial stresses and the axial normal stress in both plane stress state and plane strain state were obtained to study the actuation effects being transferred from the actuator to the host. The stress distributions of the PZT actuator in different length and different thickness were analyzed to guarantee the generality. The validity of the present model has been demonstrated by application of specific examples and comparisons with the corresponding results obtained from the Finite Element Method.
