  • Machine or structural members subjected to fatigue loading will have a crack initiated during early part of their life. Therefore analysis of members with cracks and other discontinuities is very important. Finite element method has enjoyed widespread use in engineering, but it is not convenient for crack problems as the region very close to crack tip is to be discretized with very fine mesh. However, as the body force method (BFM), requires only the boundary of the discontinuity (crack or hole) to be discretized it is easy versatile technique to analyze such problems. In the present work fundamental solution for concentrated load x + iy acting in the semi-infinite plate at an arbitrary point $z_0=x_0+iy_0$ is considered. These fundamental solutions are in complex form ${\phi}(z)$ and ${\psi}(z)$ (England 1971). These potentials are known as Melan potentials (Ramakrishna 1994). A crack in the semi-infinite plate as shown in Fig. 1 is considered. This crack is divided into number of divisions. By applying pair of body forces on a division, the resultant forces on the remaining 'N'divisions are to be found for which ${\phi}_1(z)$ and ${\psi}_1(z)$ are derived. Body force method is applied to calculate stress intensity factor for crack in semi-infinite plate. Also for the case of crack emanating from circular hole in semi-infinite plate radial stress, hoop stress and shear stress are calculated around the hole and crack. Convergent results are obtained by body force method. These results are compared with FEM results.

  • A discrete joint finite element with joint surface degradation was developed to investigate the shear behavior of rough rock joint. Isoparametric formulation was used for facilitating the implementation of the element in existing Finite Element Codes. The elasto-plastic joint deformation model with the discontinuity constitutive law proposed by Plesha was applied to the element. The reliability of the developed finite element code was successfully testified through numerical direct shear tests conducted under both constant normal stress and constant normal displacement conditions. The result of the numerical direct shear test showed that the code can capture characteristic deformation features envisaged in the direct shear test of rough rock joint.

  • An interface always appears when a repair is applied to an aged infrastructure system for repair. These repaired structures have the high chance to fail along the interface because of the stress concentration/discontinuity along the interface. So, mechanical properties of the interface have much influence on the behavior of repaired structure systems. In this paper, numerical tool that can predict effectively the interfacial fracture behavior is developed using axial deformation link elements, and this numerical technique is applied to the interfacial failure behavior. The results coincide with the ultimate strength and failure profile on the interfacial behavior of carbon fiber sheets for strengthening with epoxy adhesion. Thus, the mechanical behavior of the interface up to failure can be predicted using numerical technique with the proposed axial deformation link elements.

  • In this study, ultimate strength of concrete deep beams with an opening is predicted by using Strut-and-Tie Model with a new effective compressive strength. First crack occurs around an opening by stress concentration due to geometric discontinuity. This results in decreasing ultimate strength of deep beams with an opening compared with general deep beams. With fundamental notion that ultimate strength of deep beam with an opening decreases as a result of reduction in effective compressive strength of a concrete strut, an equivalent effective compressive strength formula is proposed in order to reflect ultimate strength reduction due to an opening located in a concrete strut. An equivalent effective compressive strength formula which can reflect opening size and position is added to a testified algorithm of predicting ultimate strength of concrete deep beams. Therefore, ultimate strength of concrete deep beam with an opening is predicted by using a simple and rational STM algorithm including an equivalent effective compressive strength formula, not by finite element analysis or a former complex Strut-and-Tie Model

  • The finite element alternating method is extended further for general three dimensional cracks in an isotropic body subjected to the mode I loading. The required analytical solution for a dime dimensional crack in an infinite isotropic body is obtained by solving the integral equations. In order to remove the high singularity in integration, the technique suggested by Keat et al. was used. With the proposed method several example problems are solved in order to check the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

  • Finite element alternating method have been suggested and used for assessing the integrity of cracked structures. In the paper, in order to analyze arbitrarily shaped three dimensional cracks, the finite element alternating method is extended. The cracks are modeled as a distribution of displacement discontinuities by the displacement discontinuity method and the symmetric Galerkin boundary element method. Applied the proposed method to three dimensional crack included in the elbow, the efficiency and applicability of the method were demonstrated.

  • This paper presents an adaptive finite element method for magnetostatic force computation using Maxwell's stress tensor Mesh refinements are performed automatically by interelement flux density discontinuity errors and element force errors. In initial mesh, the computed forces for different Integration paths give great differences. but converge to a certain value as mesh division is performed by the adaptive scheme, We obtained good agreement between analytic solutions and numerical values In typical examples.

  • In this study, using constant normal stiffness(CNS) direct shear tests, side shear load distribution were analyzed by the influencing parameters of unconfined compressive strength, surface roughness, confining stress, and material properties. Based on the CNS tests, side shear load transfer function of drilled shafts in rock is proposed using geological strength index(GSI), which indicates discontinuity and surface condition of rock mass in Hoek-Brown criterion. Though comparisons with results of nine drilled shafts's load tests, it is found that the load-transfer curve by this study is in good agreement with the general trend observed by in situ measurements, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of bearing capacity of drilled shaft.

  • Cracks on the cylinder block of diesel engines will often happen due to cyclic load and thermal stress. According to the Classification Societies' rules, welding repairs of cylinder block made of cast irons are generally not permitted. However, such welding repairs became inevitable taking enormous cost and time for their renewal into consideration. In this study repair welding methods for the cylinder blocks, made of gray cast irons were reviewed and the tests of their welds were carried out in order to purpose the repair welding methods of packing seat and o-ring seat of cylinder block and apply them to the practice. It is concluding remarks that the suspected crack by a magnetic particle test due to different magnetic permeability can be identified, which are not associated with a mechanical discontinuity.

  • The transition membrane elements with drilling freedom have been developed. The functionals for the linear problem, in which the drilling rotations are introduced as independent variables, have been presented by Hughes & Bressi. And 4-node membrane elements with drilling degrees of freedom were developed by Ibrahimbegovic. The transition elements can be efficiently used in modelling the in-plane structures, in particular, where the stress concentration exists. A modified Gaussian quadrature adopted to evaluate the stiffness matrices of these transition elements which have slope discontinuity of displacement within the elements. Detailed numerical studies show the excellent performance of the transition elements.
