  • Wind induced large bending oscillation amplitudes in tall and slender telecommunication steel towers may lead to precocious fatigue cracks and consequent risk of collapse of these structures, many of them installed in rural areas alongside highways and in highly populated urban areas. Varying stress amplitudes at hot spots may be attenuated by means of passive control mechanical devices installed in the tower. This paper gives an account of both mathematical-numerical model and the technique applied to design and evaluate the performance of a double controller installed in existing towers which is composed by a nonlinear pendulum and a novel type of passive controller described herein as a planar motion disk mounted on shear springs. Results of experimental measurements carried out on two slender tubular steel towers under wind action demonstrate the efficiency of the double controllers in attenuating the towers bending oscillation amplitudes and consequent stress amplitudes extending the towers fatigue life.

  • This paper presents the effect of shape of external corrosion in pipeline on failure prediction by using a numerical simulation. The numerical study for the pipeline failure analysis is based on the FEM(Finite Element Method)with an elastic-plstic and large-deformation analysis. Corrosion pits and narrow corrosion grooves in pressurized pipeline were analysed. A failure criterion, based on the local stress state at the corrosion and a plastic collapse failure mechanism, is proposed. The predicted failure stress assessed for the simulated corrosion defects having different corroded shapes along the pipeline axis compared with those by methods specified in ANSI/ASME B31G code and a modified B31G code. It is concluded the corrosion geometry significantly affects the failure behavior of corroded pipeline and categorisation of pipeline corrosion should be considered in the development of new guidance for integrity assessment.

  • Many electric poles in the softground have been collapsed due to external load. In this study, 10 types of tests were performed with variation of location, numbers and depths of anchor blocks as well as depth of poles to find stresses acting on concrete electric poles. The stresses of concrete poles are relaxed at 600~700[kg] of tensile load, and stresses are concentrated at top of pole, and spread to lower part of pole. In the concrete pole collapse test, tensile load at failure was approximately 1,400[kg], which is twice of design load. As passive zone in the soil increases, the stresses acting on concrete pole are concentrated at lower part of pole based on moment arm earth pressure distribution.

  • The behavior of pore pressure and effective stress in a highly saturated sand bed under variations in the water pressure in its surface were investigated to determine the mechanism of the collapse of hydraulic structures during flooding or when attacked by storm waves. The vertical, one-dimensional model was used as a basic model to clarify the effect of water pressure variation on only to the vertical direction. The theoretical results show that a sand bed under variations of water pressure is weakened by an increase in excess pore pressure and that under certain conditions the sand bed will liquefy. Although many factors related to water pressure variation and property of the material determine this phenomenon, the mist important factor seems to be the small amount of air present in the sand bed. The theoretical results reported are verified by experiments.

  • U-Channel Bridge is effective bridge type, because its edge beam performs role of barrier and enables to reduce additional dead loads. Nevertheless, there is possibility of bridge collapse under impact load due to car crash. Also, edge beam must have ability to induce safe driving and prevent falling accidents. Therefore, this study carries out analysis of behavior of edge beam and slab and evaluation of structural stability under impact loads, based on Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specification. According to analysis result, the maximum stress of edge beam and slab satisfies specification of allowable stress.

  • The current design practice of electric transmission tower is based on the allowable stress design. However, it is difficult to find the cause behind a transmission tower's collapse by the above design approach as the collapse is caused by large secondary deformations based on and geometrical nonlinear behavior.influence factor for the nonlinear behavior is mainly residual stress, initial imperfection and end restraints on members. In this study, the necessity of the nonlinear analysis is examined through the comparison between elastic ana the nonlinear analysis, a new analytical method (equivalent nonlinear analysis technique) is proposed. To confirm the reliability of the proposed method, the computed ultimate load of the transmission tower using the method was compared with that of the nonlinear finite element analysis. Effects of parameters, such as compressive force and the slenderness ratio of the brace member on the main post member, were investigated. The effective member length according to influential parameters was formulated in table form for practical purposes.

  • In a city where the greenery always lacks landscaping roofs of existing buildings offers a way to solve the problem. But the most serious problem that poses is the matter of load limit. At present most existing buildings have the loading capacity of 200 kg/$m^2$ or less on their roofs. If the natural soil is used the loading capacity is easily surpassed because it simply is too heavy. To alleviate this problem it is realized to introduce the light weight artificial soil. The specific gravity of light soil is 0.65 whereas the natural soil is 1.8 when wet. It is three times lighter than the natural soil, thus eases the burden to the roof. The next problem to be confronted is the plant species to plant. It is possible to plant trees but they soon outgrow the loading capacity by weighing 8 times heavier in 10 years. Therefore shrubs and perennials are suggested to be planted because they don't weigh much even when they reach the mature height. The last problem is the stress put on roofs by the weight of the users. By some unexpected event the crowd gathered on a weak roof can cause the structural damage or even the collapse of the roof. The avoid the possibility of collapse a plaza or big pocket should not be designed in a roof garden because they hold crowd. By following the suggested means the old roofs of existing buildings can turn into the urban oases in the sky.

  • The casing has been used as a protective conduit during all phases of drilling operations and productions for the oil and gas industries. The casing is manufactured in various diameters, wall thicknesses, lengths, strengths, and connections. When the casing is designed, it has to be considered to withstand a variety of forces, such as collapse, burst, and tensile failure, as well as chemically aggressive brines. Once the casing is damaged, serious problems in geothermal well have been detected continuously. Therefore, this paper describes the casing design for stability of geothermal well to determine influence of casing parameters on the strength and load. In addition, the casing design program was developed. The estimated collapse, burst, tension and depth pressure can provide benefit in the casing design and completion method. This program provides a safety factor and predicts the casing stress more easily.

  • Composites have wide applications in aerospace vehicles and automobiles because of the inherent flexibility in their design lot improved material properties. Composite tubes in particular, are potential candidates for their use as energy absorbing elements in crashworthiness applications due to their high specific energy absorbing capacity and the stroke efficiency. Their failure mechanism however is highly complicated and rather difficult to analyze. This includes fracture in fibers, in the matrix and in the fiber-matrix interface in tension, compression and shear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the energy absorption characteristics of Gr/E(Graphite/Epoxy) tubes on static and impact tests. The collapse characteristics and energy absorption of a variety of tubes have been examined. Changes in the lay-up which increased the modulus increased the energy absorption of the tubes. Based on the test results, the following remarks can be made: Among CA15, CA00 and CA90 curves the CA90 tube exhibits the highest crush load throughout the whole crush process, and max load increases as interlaminar number increase. Among all the tubes type CC90 has the largest specific crushing stress of 52.60 kJ/kg which is much larger than other tubes.

  • Vinyl house consists of main rafter, lateral member, clamps and polyethylene film. Many vinyl houses are used to grow fruits, flowers and vegetables in the countryside. Due to climate change, vinyl houses are often destroyed by strong winds or typhoons in summer. Many farmers suffer great economic damage from the collapse of vinyl houses. So it is very important to build a safe vinyl house and find a method to withstand this heavy wind load. In this study, a structural analysis was performed on four types of vinyl houses(10-single-4, 10-single-6, 10-single-7, 10-single-10). In addition, axial force and flexural moment are obtained from the structural analysis of four types of vinyl house. For these four types of vinyl house, structural safety was reviewed by obtaining the combined stress ratio by the strength design method. This structural review showed that the specifications for the vinyl house proposed in the design are not safe. Especially, the result of structural analysis for four types of vinyl house showed that the vinyl house structure constructed as a standard was a very dangerous structure. Therefore, it is necessary to devise diverse methods in order to make vinyl houses structurally safe for heavy wind load in the future. Also a variety of manual development is needed to prevent the collapse of vinyl houses at heavy wind load.
