  • In order to create humanitarian living environment with sustainable ecological environment, urban regeneration project has been implemented recently seeking diverse methods for residents'participation stressing the process of communication with the residents changing from the existing one way planning by limited number of experts. Particularly, it is essential to develop systematic tools to promote the voluntary and positive participation of the residents because residents have to perform as the master of urban streetscape design project that requires sophisticated knowledge and experience and also because the residents have to function as sustainable maintainers and managers of their streetscape. This study intends to identify the organizational structure and major contents of design guideline as a tool to support the voluntary and positive participation of the residents in streetscape maintenance. For this purpose based on the structural system and characteristics of Chicago streetscape design guideline that was developed as tool for residents' participation, efforts were made to set up framework of design guideline for sustainable streetscape project with the users' participation with their overall understanding and trust. In detail, the author studied the resident participatory process for sustainable maintenance and management in a long term landscape project and the principle and theories of design planning for streetscape that supports the utilizing behaviors of the users, and how this information should be linked and organized to form the structure and contents of design guideline. As a tool supporting residents' participation and helping the residents perform the responsible function as sustainable maintainers and managers of their streetscape through social maturity with ontological sense of masters of their local community as they experience the gradual processes of their streetscape maintenance project, streetscape design guideline has its meaning in the efforts that tried to achieve deep participation of the residents through researches converging the two academic sectors of urban architecture and social psychology.

  • As important elements consisting of city streetscape, facade design on building is generally very significant. But without active acceptance and understanding of the concept that the building has a private objective as personal property, it is not easy to take an involvement into design as well as to establish reasonable and scientific standards of harmony. Therefore, for desirable streetscape planning, it is indispensable to know how to closely examine the visual harmony of already established buildings in each street and how to get the solutions for its realization. In this respect, this study is to try to examine and verify the feasibility of our present streetscape situation by experimental application of acceptable Y. Elesheshtawy's model(1997), an interpretation of quantitative index of street buildings by Gestalt theory, for the preparation of the foundation of institute and standards of building design which has social value in contributing to visual and spacious harmony in our street space without giving any damage to private property. From the result, I can assure the validity that the physical complexity, whose schema is socially and culturally different from our reality, is applicable to our actual streetscape in some extent.

  • The urban street has been escaped from functional and uniformed arrangement for merely movement to the space which can take the role of cozy and familiar culture. Therefore I tried to prepare a plan for the wide roads having streetscape which reveal area's identity as well as coziness and convenience by grasping the problem and its solution through analysing and deducing various elements with the subject of streetscape among urban landscape components, especially composing wide road's streetscape. First of all, this study made a simulation by deducing components of wide road's streetscape and controlling them with theoretical review of streetscape and consideration of wide road's local characteristic. With the evaluation on the base of them, that following four components could be the representative things of entrance part was confirmed by this study. They were familiar streetscape, symbolic scene as as an entrance gate, continuous and dynamic streetscape, and interesting and pleasant streetscape. And for the middle part, those four components could represent the wide road's streetscapeI were confirmed. They were familiar streetscape, safe and tender streetscape, pleasant and dynamic streetscape, and symbolic streetscape. It seems that the components of the streetscape obtained from the analysis of this study are utilized as reference data in the case of a future streetscape design conclusively.

  • This study aims to examine and research the characteristics of apartment landscape at the street from a view that apartments are the major element of a cityscape and many apartments form a street today. Then, the subjects of this study were three sections consisting of streets in Namak New Town and the results were as follows. A streetscape is necessary to have identity under the unity(context) of parts which orient to "one as a whole". However, the subject apartments were not united(contextual) in layouts, roofs, and walls, whereas their facades appeared too united(contextual). Accordingly, to make a united(contextual) streetscape, the wall located in a boundary(a buffer zone) with public space which consists of a streetscape, building layout, building height, and roof forms need a design guideline which can have unity as a whole to connect with architectural design. On the other hand, the facade which was found too uniform should have a more active design guideline to elicit identity at unity.

  • The fundamental concept of shared street is integration of traffic and pedestrian activity as a positive principle for street planning. Shared streets have been very successful in several countries in terms of reductions in traffic accidents, increased social interaction and children's play, and a high degree of satisfaction by the residents. This paper proposes the concept of shared street to solve traffic problem without reorganizing traditional street structure and without disturbing traditional function of street as a living space for residents. And this study examines detail concepts and techniques of the shared street and applies them to a pedestrian oriented streetscape design of "Ducksugung-Gil," Seoul, which was one of the most important streets in Korean modernization history.n history.

  • A study on the image identification of urban streetscape is valuable for illuminating identity that is not yet fully approached in the field of environmental design. This analysis of urban streetscape for image identification allows us to make a more detailed exploration of an important approaching methods in dealing with the structural characteristics of identity. As a matter of fact, the earlier indirect studies on this image identification were made by environmental designers, such as architectural and urban designer in the field of environmental perception and came to its environmental cognition & environmental pattern research with assistances by such researchers as K. Lynch A. Rapoport & Christopher Alexander. Through its environmental perception research, we can see its structural characteristics that is aesthetic & visual structural contents of physical environmental elements. And we can see its cognitive characteristics through the environmental cognitive research, that is continuity, territoriality, identity of place, uniqueness or individuality, meaning & symbolism. Through its environmental pattern research, we can see its physical, socio - economic, cultural and symbolic pattern identification contents, that is physical form of the city, style of the street, pattern of streetscape, socio- economic & geographical locality, arid life cycle, life style, common style of the behavior, cultural pattern of the activity, socio - cultural expression of the symbol. In these process, we can set up a set of the environmental design criterias from those three integral studies for identity. And for an environmental research, Tongsung-Ro around the CBD (central business district) in Taegu City was selected for a case study, because this streetscape is suitable for that approaching methods in this study.

  • Recently it is urgent issue in every department that problem from environmental disruption such as global warming. As the case of streetscape works essentially at city scenery, it is inevitable that changing from present view, which centers facilities and buildings, to environmental harmonic scenery. This study plans climate adjusting ability and improvement of thermal efficiency by putting ecological elements to buildings on a street which are essential factors of streetscape. Ultimately, this not only makes a pleasant environment but also revives being withered earth. Street-environment on eco-scape will take a part in designing sustainable city. This study acquires the way how buildings on a street get applied ecological elements as following. Roof level part : the greening surface of the rooftop(included plant box type), the greening roof as a type of pergola, the greening surface of the middle floor rooftop(included plant box type). Elevation part : climbing type, downfall type, espalier, flower bed in balcony type, wall-installing type, water wall type, other design types. • The Pasadena Freeway follows the Arroyo Seco through foothills and scenic passes to link Downtown Los Angeles with Pasadena. The approximately 10 mile road was the first freeway built in the West during the 1930's and is today designated as a Historic Parkway. As it approaches Pasadena, it terminates at a traffic light intersection at Glenarm Street, and then becomes a commercial road the Arroyo Parkway. This one and a quarter mile long, north south road moves significant volumes of traffic both into and out of Pasadena. The Arroyo Parkway is thus a major 'gateway' and an important axis of orientation and movement, terminating in the City's core civic, commercial and retail district. Planting, lighting, signage, paving, furnishing and fixtures ought to all be properly designed and coordinated to create a distinctive 'gateway' experience arriving to Pasadena and driving along the Arroyo Parkway. Alternate design studies, developed in discussion with City officials and others involved in the redevelopment of the area, would need to be done to properly decide on the best direction. Issues of heritage and traditional streetscape will likely have to be reconciled with both the reality of the vehicular character of the road and more contemporary themes. Obviously with such large parcels of property available in the Arroyo Fair Oaks corridor, there is a huge potential for redevelopment and building. This potential would only be strengthened by the Light Rail Line and its stations, the improvements to the Arroyo Parkway, and the redevelopment of the Arts Center College of Design. Guides and controls to the development process, including programming and physical design studies, would need to be developed in order to ensure that the maximum potential for the corridor be realized. This concept proposal suggests that the whole strip might be developed as a Arts and Technology corridor, with special emphases on education, public culture, media and lifestyle. The full programming possibilities need to be further developed. Additionally, appropriate urban design guidelines to ensure high quality development also need to be incorporated into an overall development plan.
