  • Oil-based nanofluids were prepared by dispersing Ag, graphite and carbon black nanoparticles in lubricating oil. Agglomerated nanoparticles were dispersed evenly with a high-speed bead mill and/or ultrasonic homogenizer, and the surfaces of the nanoparticles were modified simultaneously with several dispersants. Their tribological behaviors were evaluated with a pin-on-disk, disk-on-disk and four-ball EP and wear tester. It is obvious that the optimal combination of nanoparticles, surfactants and surface modification process is very important for the dispersity of nanofluids, and it eventually affects the tribological properties as a controlling factor. Results indicate that a relatively larger size and higher concentration of nanoparticles lead to better load-carrying capacity. In contrast, the use of a smaller size and lower concentration of particles is recommended for reducing the friction coefficient of lubricating oil. Moreover, nanofluids with mixed nanoparticles of Ag and graphite are more suitable for the improvement of load-carrying capacity and antiwear properties.

  • Against the backdrop of Habermas' theory of communicative action, we empirically analyzed the level of interactivity and narratives offered in nation-states' ministry of foreign affairs Web sites. A multiple regression analysis was performed in an attempt to identify factors affecting the level of interactivity in such Web sites. Findings revealed that the level of economic development is the sole significant factor in regards to the level of interactivity. Further, self-interested, goal-directed, and strategic purposes behind the allegedly transparent, engaging, and interactive public diplomacy were evidenced through a critical analysis of the objectives, key issues, and target publics addressed and highlighted in the public diplomacy narratives on the Web. The results suggested a possible digital divide in the interactive adoption of Web public diplomacy as well as strategic motives and interests embedded in the public diplomacy communication on the Web. This study helps increase our understanding of the paradox of public diplomacy in the digital age.

  • An empirical study utilizing data was performed with a variable called 'strategic planning' for festivals in order to look into the impact of a cultural tourism festival on urban regeneration. As a success factor of a festival, strategic festival planning was drawn up, and the following hypotheses were set: Seven strategic factors verified through an exploratory factor analysis will have a positive impact on festival satisfaction (festival success) and on urban regeneration, and festival satisfaction will have a positive impact on urban regeneration by having a mediating effect on it. For the analysis, the Gimje Horizon Festival was selected as it was considered as a typical case of urban regeneration through a festival, and the relationship between the festival and urban regeneration was understood by conducting a combined analysis of a quantitative analysis through a survey, a literature search, field investigations and in-depth interviews. The quantitative analysis indicates that strategic planning has a positive impact on festival satisfaction (festival success) and on urban regeneration and that festival satisfaction has a positive impact on urban regeneration. The same study result as the quantitative analysis result was obtained even through a qualitative analysis. This shows that the higher the path coefficient of strategic planning, the higher the path coefficient of festival satisfaction and urban generation and that with better strategic planning, the effects of festival satisfaction and urban regeneration are maximized. In other words, when planning and implementing a festival by actively incorporating the seven strategic planning factors which were suggested as festival success factors earlier in this study beginning from the stage of festival planning, it is likely to have a positive impact not only on the success of the festival but also on urban regeneration. This is an implication that gives a new alternative to software-based urban regeneration through festivals. It is meaningful to present the importance of festival planning and the direction of planning to maximize the effect of urban regeneration to festival planners and urban regeneration experts. This study is believed to serve as a momentum for people to take a new approach to studies on festivals and urban regeneration utilizing software in the future.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Platycodon grandiflorum (PG) has long been known as a medicinal herb effective in various diseases, including bronchitis and asthma, but is still more widely used for food. Fermentation methods are being applied to increase the pharmacological composition of PG extracts and commercialize them with high added value. This study examines the hydrolyzed and fermented PG extract (HFPGE) fermented with Lactobacillus casei in RAW 264.7 cells, and investigates the effect of amplifying the immune and the probable molecular mechanism. MATERIALS/METHODS: HFPGE's total phenolic, flavonoid, saponin, and platycodin D contents were analyzed by colorimetric analysis or high-performance liquid chromatography. Cell viability was measured by the MTT assay. Phagocytic activity was analyzed by a phagocytosis assay kit, nitric oxide (NO) production by a Griess reagent system, and cytokines by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. The mRNA expressions of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cytokines were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, whereas MAPK and nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation were analyzed by Western blots. RESULTS: Compared to PGE, HFPGE was determined to contain 13.76 times and 6.69 times higher contents of crude saponin and platycodin D, respectively. HFPGE promoted cell proliferation and phagocytosis in RAW 264.7 cells and regulated the NO production and iNOS expression. Treatment with HFPGE also resulted in increased production of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand10, granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor, granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor, and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and the mRNA expressions of these cytokines. HFPGE also resulted in significantly increasing the phosphorylation of NF-κB p65, extracellular signal-regulated kinase, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our results imply that fermentation and hydrolysis result in the extraction of more active ingredients of PG. Furthermore, we determined that HFPGE exerts immunostimulatory activity via the MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathways.
