  • A new non-linear of a straight pipe conveying fluid is presented for vibration analysis when the pipe is fixed at both ends. Using the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and the non-linear Lagrange strain theory, from the extended Hamilton's principle are derived the coupled non-linear equations of motion for the longitudinal and transverse displacements. These equations of motion for are discretized by using the Galerkin method. After the discretized equations are linearized in the neighbourhood of the equilibrium position, the natural frequencies are computed from the linearized equations. On the other hand, the time histories for the displacements are also obtained by applying the $generalized-{\alpha}$ time integration method to the non-linear discretized equations. The validity of the new modeling is provided by comparing results from the proposed non-linear equations with those from the equations proposed by $Pa{\ddot{i}}dousis$.

  • This study is focused on the comparison of heat transfer performance of two thermosyphons having 60 straight and helical internal grooves. Distilled water has been used as working fluid. Liquid fill charge ratio defined by the ratio of working fluid volume to total internal volume of thermosyphon, the inclination angle and operating temperature were used as experimental parameters. The heat flux and heat transfer coefficient are estimated from experimental results. The conclusions of this study may be summarized as follows; Liquid fill charge ratio, inclination angle and geometric shape of grooves were very important factors for the operation of thermosyphon. The optimum liquid fill charge ratio for the best heat flux were $30\%$. The heat transfer performance of helically grooved tube was higher than that of straight grooved tube in low inclination angle (less than $30^{\circ}$), but the results were opposite in high inclination angle (more than $30^{\circ}$). As far as optimum inclination angle concerns, range of $25^{\circ}\~30^{\circ}$ for a helically grooved tube and about $40^{\circ}$ for a straight grooved tube are suggested angles for the best results.

  • In the present work, the mathematical model of wire coating in a straight annular die is developed for unsteady second grade fluid in the form of partial differential equation. The Optimal Homotopy Asymptotic Method (OHAM) is applied for obtaining the solution of the model problem. This method provides us a suitable way to control the convergence of the series solution using the auxiliary constants which are optimally determined.

  • This study verify the conveying characteristic and adaptability of Straight Type Seeping Auger(STSA) which is built in Combined Grain Drying and Storage System(CGDSS). It is very important to design sweeping auger which makes Combined Grain Drying and Storage System having First-In-First-Out. In order to suggest desirable idea for sweeping auger of Combined Grain Drying and Storage System, an experiment that behavior of grain on the boundary surface which is made by rotation of STSA is executed and causalities to be given problem of STSA are pointed out.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the occurrence of the high-speed mode of unsteady swirling flows in straight tubes. The unsteady flows generated in the tube were measured by means of a semiconductor-type pressure transducer and an FFT analyzer. The high-speed mode measured has rotational speed which is approximately equal to or higher than the peripheral velocity of the swirling flow. The unsteady flow is due to cell rotation in the circumferential direction of the tube. The occurrence of the high-speed mode was confirmed, and the characteristics (rotational speed, pressure amplitude, and phase) of this mode were clarified. In order to understand the measured unsteady flows, the three dimensional vortex core profiles were discussed based on the distributions of the pressure amplitude and phase.

  • This study is on the experiment of the pipe noise due to the internal fluid. The straight pipe, the $90^{\circ}$ mitred pipe, rounded $90^{\circ}$ and $1350^{\circ}$ pipe were tested and measured the vibration and noise. In the experiment, the vibration and noise level of the straight pipe and rounded pipes show that the vibration and noise level are almost same. The $90^{\circ}$ mitred pipe shows the high vibration and noise level. In the prediction of noise due to the internal flow, the use of pipe surface vibration and radiation efficiency shows good agreement with experiment result.

  • In this study, the effect of flow disturbance such as contraction, expansion pipe and velocity deviation from low velocity of $0.1\;^m/s$ to $2.5\;^m/s$ on the error characteristics of the flowmeter was studied. Flow experiments using flowmeter calibration facility of K-water were undertaken for the cases of ultrasonic flowmeter based on transit-time method and electromagnetic flowmeter. Experimental results are presented that measurement error of expansion pipe are larger than contraction pipe. It is shown that the minimum straight length were required to remain of ${\pm}0.5%$ error for electromagnetic flowmeter and ${\pm}2.0%$ error for ultrasonic flowmeter.

  • In this paper, a spectral element model is developed for the uniform straight pipelines conveying internal unsteady fluid. Four coupled pipe-dynamics equations are derived first by using the Hamilton's principle and the principles of fluid mechanics. The transverse displacement, the axial displacement, the fluid pressure and the fluid velocity are all considered as the dependent variables. The coupled pipe-dynamics equations are then linearized about the steady state values of the fluid pressure and velocity. As the final step, the spectral element model represented by the exact dynamic stiffness matrix, which is often called spectral element matrix, is formulated by using the frequency-domain solutions of the linearized pipe-dynamics equations. The FFT-based spectral dynamic analyses are conducted to evaluate the accuracy of the present spectral element model and also to investigate the structural dynamic characteristics and the internal fluid transients of an example pipeline system.

  • The purpose of this study was to validate alternative method by using non-carcinogenic, and less toxic solvents than NIOSH analytical method 5524 for measuring the airborne MWFs in workplaces. In laboratory tests, the ETM solvents(mixture of same volume for ethyl ether, toluene, and ethanol) were selected. The alternative method of analyzing MWFs, referred to as the ETM solvent extraction method, showed 0.04 mg/sample as LOD, and 0.15 mg/sample as LOQ. The analytical precision (pooled CV, coefficient of variation) of the ETM solvent extraction method for analyzing the straight, soluble, semisynthetic, and synthetic metalworking fluid was 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.6%, 1.6%, respectively, which was similar to the precision (2.6%) of NIOSH analytical method (NIOSH 0500) for total dust. The analytical accuracy by recovery test, spiked mass calculated as extractable mass, was almost 100%. As the result of storage stability test, metalworking fluid samples should be stored in refrigerated condition, and be analyzed in two weeks after sampling. The 95% confidence limit of the estimated total standard error for the ETM solvent extraction method for analyzing the straight, soluble, semisynthetic, and synthetic metalworking fluid was ${\pm}12.6%$, ${\pm}12.5%$, ${\pm}14.0%$, and ${\pm}13.6%$, respectively, which satisfied the OSHA sampling and analytical criteria.

  • Fluid-elastic instability in an air-water two-phase cross-flow has been experimentally investigated using two different arrays of straight tube bundles: normal square (NS) array and rotated square (RS) array tube bundles with the same pitch-to-diameter ratio of 1.633. Experiments have been performed over wide ranges of mass flux and void fraction. The quantitative tube vibration displacement was measured using a pair of strain gages and the detailed orbit of the tube motion was analyzed from high-speed video recordings. The present study provides the flow pattern, detailed tube vibration response, damping ratio, hydrodynamic mass, and the fluid-elastic instability for each tube bundle. Tube vibration characteristics of the RS array tube bundle in the two-phase flow condition were quite different from those of the NS array tube bundle with respect to the vortex shedding induced vibration and the shape of the oval orbit of the tube motion at the fluid-elastic instability as well as the fluid-elastic instability constant.
