  • Because of the ozone layer depletion and global wanning, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. Among them, HFC refrigerants are thought promising, but some European countries are arguing that these refrigerants are also harmful to the global wanning. Therefore, natural refrigerants should be considered as an eventual alternative in refrigerators and heat pumps. In the present study, the supercritical gas cooling process are computationally analysed by employing various turbulence models of carbon dioxide in a trans critical refrigeration cycle. The gas cooling process near the critical point experiences a drastic change in thermodynamic and transport properties, thus the heat transfer characteristics would be different from those of two or single phases. Based on the computational results, the correlations to estimate the near-critical heat transfer characteristics will are obtained.

  • A header' is the device that makes uniform flow distribution in all branches from header of heat exchangers, pipe burner or chemical equipments. In this study, experimental tests have been performed in order to investigate the flow distribution characteristics in a straight header and tapered header which have 6 and 11 glass pipe branches. The experimental equipment consists of a water circulation system where the fluid velocity in each glass pipe is measured by Ar-ion LDV system. From the experiments and the theoretical equation, it could be recommended that tapered header should be determined so that its internal velocities inside the header become uniform according to taper of the header and number of attached branches for uniform flow distribution in energy systems.

  • A steady dilute premixed combustion at transonic speeds in a diverging channel is investigated. The model explores the nonlinear interactions between the near-sonic speed of the flow, the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction. The reactive flow can be described by a nonhomogeneous transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation coupled with an ordinary differencial equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. The asymptotic analysis results in the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow problem. The model is used to study transonic combustion at various amounts of incoming, reactant mass, reaction rates, and channel geometries.

Frequency Response Characteristics of Automotive Hydraulic Pipelines (자동차용 유압관로의 주파수 응답 특성)

  • In this paper, automotive hydraulic pipeline systems are modeled in which a straight blocked pipe, two pipes with sudden expansion or contraction are connected in series and terminated with a chamber. The frequency response characteristics of these composite pipeline systems are investigated experimentally. The theoretical analysis for various pipe configurations is base on transfer matrix method with frequency dependent viscous friction distributed parameter pipeline model. The gain and phase of transfer functions are included for comparison with experimental results. There is close agreement between the results of experimental and theoretical determination of pressure response in automotive hydraulic pipeline systems.

  • Unsteady compressible Euler equation is solved and the high-order, high-resolution numerical solver, physical boundary condition, adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model and conformal mapping are applied to computation of steady transonic flow and unsteady acoustics. The acoustic characteristics of axi-symmetric duct and two dimensional straight/S channel are studied and the computation results shows good agreements with linear analysis. In transonic case, local time stepping and canceling-the-residual techniques are used for convergence acceleration. The aspect of flow and acoustics in S-channel and the Pattern of noise radiation is changed by inflow Mach no. and static pressure at fan-face.

  • This paper presents analysis of the flows through three different types of radial compressor impeller by using quasi-three-dimensional analysis method. The method obtains two-dimensional solution for velocity distribution on meridional plane, and then calculates approximately the static pressure distributions on blade surfaces. Finite difference method is used for the solutions of governing equations. The compressors have low level compression-ratio and 12 straight radial blades with no sweepback. The results are compared with experimental data and the results of inviscid analysis with finite element method. It can be concluded that the agreement is good for the cases where viscous effects are not dominant.

  • A five path ultrasonic and/or magnetic flowmeter were installed after valve. Five path ultrasonic flowmeter were tested to obtain it's performance in a water flow standard system and magnetic flowmeter. It's varied with straight pipe length(nD), install direction and valve position. All the results are summerized. The multi-path flowmeters(MUF) showed up to $\pm0.5{\%}$ at a 2, 4, 8, 15D spacing : the MUF was significantly better than magnetic flowmeter at disturbed flow conditions.

  • Three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the tip-leakage flow region of a high-turning first-stage turbine rotor blade with a squealer tip have been measured with a straight miniature five-hole probe for the tip gap-to-chord ratio, h/e, of 2,0%. This squealer tip has a indent-to-chord ratio, $h_{st}/c$, of 5.5%. The results are compared with those for a plane tip ($h_{st}/c\;=\;0.0%$). The squealer tip tends to reduce the mass flow through the tip gap and to suppress the development of the tip-leakage vortex. Therefore, it delivers lower aerodynamic loss in the near-tip region than the plane tip does. At the mid-span, however, the aerodynamic loss has nearly the same value for the two different tips.

  • Static mixers have found a large range of applications, including blending, reaction, dispersion, heat transfer and mass transfer. All static mixers have in common a straight pipe or transfer tube into which individual elements are inserted to cut, fold, twist and re-combine the mixing fluid. The operations virtually ensure uniformity in composition, concentration, viscosity and temperature. The objective of this study is to perform the experimental investigations of mixing characteristics for three mixing element types. The resulting mixing patterns were recorded with a digital camera. OPTIMAS was used to analysis the visualized images. The results clearly indicated that the mixing characteristics was highly influenced by the mixer types or mixing mode.
